In this episode of the Running Lean podcast, I break my silence about making the switch to eating meat again. Many of you know that I’ve been a big proponent of the plant-based diet for the last 10 years and hearing that I’m now eating meat again may come as a bit of a surprise.
I wanted to record this episode to explain what led me to make the switch, answer questions about why I made this change (and why now), and talk about the impact it’s had on my overall health and athletic performance.
I also talk about what this means for you as a listener of the podcast or as a coaching client.

Let’s face it, it’s been a challenging year for all of us. Just consider the impact the COVID-19 global pandemic has had on each of us – this year has been a huge challenge!
We’ve all been forced outside our comfort zones and into a place that feels very uncomfortable, and very challenging.
But what I want to talk about today is how it’s these very challenges that we face that show us who we really are.
It’s the challenges that force us to grow.
It’s the challenges that change us – sometimes in profound ways – that we never would have experienced if it weren’t for going through all the discomfort of those challenges.
The challenges we face are ESSENTIAL for our growth as human beings.

I’m here with a special edition of the podcast to give you a quick update on what’s coming – The Running Mind Podcast is getting a new name!
I want the podcast name to more accurately represent the material I’m teaching, and so I’m making a very minor change to the name of the show.
You don’t have to do anything at all. The next time you download an episode, it will have a different picture and you’ll see the new name, that’s really about it!
I’ll still be delivering the same great content that you love: running mindset, nutrition, weight loss, becoming fat-adapted, running motivation, and so much more!
I’ll just be doing it under a slightly different name.
So, what’s the new name? You’ll have to listen to find out!

Fruit is one of those things we all just assume is good for us, right? Everyone agrees we should be eating more fruits and vegetables. But should we?
We check the label on something and we’re like, “Hey, this is made with real fruit juice, it must be healthy!” But is it really?
How much fruit should we be eating? What role does fruit play in long-distance running? What about all those vitamins in fruit…don’t we need those? Does fruit help us or hurt us if we’re trying to lose weight?
I will be digging into all of these questions in this episode of The Running Mind Podcast: The Ultimate Guide to Fruit.

Sugar has been the subject of controversy since as far back as over 2,000 years ago when Hindu physicians wrote about sugar that it “promotes nutrition and corpulency” (meaning fatness or obesity).
Today, everyone knows that eating too much sugar is a bad idea, yet the average American is consuming around 150 lbs of sugar a year. We find it almost impossible to “just say no” to our favorite sugary treat. Willpower just doesn’t work, it seems.
So the question on the table is… is sugar addictive? Should sugar be treated more like a drug than a nutrient? Do we even need to eat sugar? I’m getting into all of that in this episode of The Running Mind Podcast.

The post 28. Is Sugar Addictive or Do We Just Act Like It Is? appeared first on Running Lean with Patrick McGilvray.
I think we can all agree that sugar is not good for us. And yet, there seems to be sugar hidden in just about everything we eat! And I’m not talking about the sugary cereals or the soft drinks – we all know there’s sugar in that stuff. The real problem is all the sugar hidden in foods that normally shouldn’t have added sugar.
From crackers to coffee drinks, pasta sauce to peanut butter, salad dressing to salsa, you’ll find sugar virtually everywhere you look.
Why is this? Why do they add sugar to everything? Why is this such a big problem?
In this episode, I’ll be answering all of those questions and I’ll offer some tips on how to avoid all that added sugar in your life.

There are more diets out there in the world right now (and more conflicting information about those diets) than I even care to think about. There also seems to be a common recurring theme about all of these diets – the fact that they just don’t work.
Why is this? Why don’t diets work? Every one of them claims they are the answer to our weight loss problems, and basically every one of them fails to produce lasting results.
Today, I’m going to dive into the five biggest reasons why diets don’t work and give you a few options for what you should focus on instead.

The post 25. Why Diets Don’t Work appeared first on Running Lean with Patrick McGilvray.
A lot of people, especially non-runners, believe that running is a cure-all for every health ailment out there today, especially being overweight. People think that if they are overweight, all they have to do is start running and they will magically lose all the weight and live happily ever after… the end.
The truth is very different though. Running is NOT the magic pill for weight loss. It’s just not. There’s a lot more going on that we have to look at. Running is amazing though, and it definitely plays a role in living a healthy vibrant life, but it’s not everything.
So… yes runners, just like everyone else, need a coach to show them the way.
Today I’m going to talk about why I decided to become a weight loss coach for runners, what this means for you, and the AHA moment I had that completely shifted my thinking around running, health, fitness, and diet.
