  • 23. Eating Fat Does Not Make You Fat

I talk a lot about what it takes to become a lean runner, and it involves making changes physically, mentally, and emotionally.

You need to learn how to get your mind right, how to change your thinking, how to recognize and change those old programs you have running in your mind.

You need to learn how to allow and process your emotions instead of resisting and rejecting them…and eating over them.

And you need to learn how to address the physical aspects of becoming lean – what to eat, what to avoid, and how running fits into all of this.

In this episode, I’ll be diving into one of the physical aspects of becoming lean and dispelling the myth that eating fat will make you fat, and how fat will actually HELP you get lean and become a better runner.

If you enjoy this episode and it inspires you in some way, I’d love to hear about it and know your biggest takeaway! Take a screenshot of you listening on your device, post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @pmcgilvray.

  • 22. Colin McGilvray on What It Takes to Hit a Big Weight Loss Goal

I recently sat down to have a candid conversation with one of my favorite clients – my son Colin!

Colin has struggled with his weight his whole life. He’s always been the “big kid”, and that hasn’t always been easy for him.

As his dad, I’ve wanted to help him lose weight for a long time, but I knew that in order for the change to be effective, he had to want it for himself.

He finally reached out to me a couple of months ago and asked for my help. So I started coaching him just like I would any other client. (OK, he may have gotten a little more of my time, but hey, I’m his dad!)

Colin has been an ideal client and he’s had some pretty amazing results so far:

    • He’s lost over 40 lbs!
    • He had to buy new pants because nothing he has fits anymore.
    • He’s kicked his daily Mountain Dew habit.
    • He’s not only changed what he eats, but also why he eats.
    • He has a whole new relationship with food.
    • He looks better, he feels better, and he has so much more confidence in himself.

As a parent, that’s all we really want for our kids – for them to feel good about themselves.

I know you’ll be inspired by Colin’s story. He’s faced this challenge with courage and determination and his results are nothing short of amazing.

And if it moves you, feel free to share a few words of encouragement for Colin, I know he’d love it!

This is the third episode of my three-part series called How to Become a Lean Running Machine.

This subject is near and dear to my heart. I’ve spent years and years trying every type of diet imaginable and nothing ever worked.

Until… I finally figured out the secrets to becoming a lean runner – to getting back to my natural weight and staying there.

I’m sharing everything I’ve learned with you right here on the podcast.

In this episode, I’m going to cover the often-overlooked mental and emotional aspects of weight loss.

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you have to completely change the way you think and feel about food. You have to develop a whole new relationship with eating.

Learning to manage your mind and allow your emotions is not magic, it’s a skill you can learn. And here’s the best part…when you learn how to do this, you can apply it to every area of your life. There’s nothing you won’t be able to accomplish.

There’s a lot of uncertainty happening in our lives right now. Are we going to get sick? Will someone we know get sick? Do I still have a job? Will my 401k ever recover? How are we going to pay the mortgage? Are we ever going to find toilet paper?

What would that look like for you? How would you feel? What would you do differently? Take a listen and let me know how you intend to make peace with all the uncertainty.

    • 16. The Secrets to Achieving Any Goal

Today I’m talking about the right way vs. the wrong way to set goals. The problem is most people pick some random goal, it’s usually too small, and they kinda sorta come up with a plan for making it happen. This is a terrible way of doing things and it never works!

In this episode, I’m going to walk you through a better way of setting goals. But even more importantly, I’m going to teach you how to ACHIEVE those goals. And it doesn’t matter what they are – the process is the same for whatever goal we’re talking about. So strap in, this is going to be a fun one!

    • 15. The Surprising Power of Self-Awareness

Most people are not consciously aware of their own thoughts, feelings, and actions. They assume that everything is just happening to them and it’s all out of their control. They aren’t aware that they are actually creating their own thoughts and emotions, and therefore their own reality.

The main reason for this is a lack of self-awareness, and it might just be the most important factor in determining the results you get (or don’t get) in your running, in your weight loss journey, in your relationships, and in every area of your life.

Today, I’m talking about the surprising power of self-awareness – what it means to develop self-awareness, how exactly you can do it, and why it’s perhaps the most powerful life skill you can learn.

    • 14. Sarah Buckley on the Myths of Strength Training for Runners

Today, I am sharing a conversation I recently had with my friend Sarah Buckley. Sarah is a badass personal trainer, owner of Persist Fitness Training and creator of Run Strong Cincy – a strength training program designed specifically for runners.

There are a lot of myths around strength training and running and Sarah breaks it all down for us here and explains why strength training is so misunderstood, especially when it comes to long-distance running.

In this eye-opening interview, Sarah and I discuss how managing your mind is the key to every good thing you want in your life – from building muscle to overcoming food addictions to running a marathon. It all begins with mindset.
