  • Film review: Avengers: Endgame and Red Joan
Every Saturday morning, movie critic Francesca Rudkin joins Jack Tame to take a look at what is playing at the movies this weekend.
    Avengers: Endgame
Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. Meanwhile, the remaining Avengers -- Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Bruce Banner -- must figure out a way to bring back their vanquished allies for an epic showdown with Thanos -- the evil demigod who decimated the planet and the universe.
    Red Joan
Joan Stanley is a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when, shockingly, the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information - including details on the building of the atomic bomb - to the Soviet government for decades. As the interrogation gets underway, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and her beliefs.

  • Nici Wickes: Ruffle cake with tamarillos & orange
This cake originates from Greece, and a café in Wanaka serves a pretty fabulous version too. There’s something magical in its crunchy and soft custardy texture. Paired with tamarillo is perfect for dessert.
    Serves 6
    4-6 tamarillo, skins removed, chopped
    2 oranges, segmented
    2 tbsps brown sugar
    5 tbsps butter, melted
    7 sheets filo
    3 large eggs
    6 tbsps sugar
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    1 ½ cups milk
    Icing sugar for dusting
    1.    In a bowl combine tamarillo and orange and sprinkle over sugar. Set aside.
    2.    Preheat oven to 180 C. Grease and line a 22cm round cake tin.
    3.    Brush a sheet of filo with butter. Use fingers tips to scrunch it up, lengthwise, into a loose strip, as though you were making a fan. This doesn’t have to be too neat and tidy. Twirl it up to a loose spiral. Place in middle of prepared tin and repeat with remaining filo sheets, making 6 more spirals. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes.
    4.    Whisk together eggs, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Pour in milk and whisk to combine. Pour over pastry. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until set.
    5.    Dust with icing sugar and serve with spoonfuls of tamarillo and orange.

  • Book review: The Editor and The Boy Who Followed his Father into Auschwitz
Catherine Raynes joined Francesca Rudkin this morning to discuss two new books for you to read this weekend.
    The Editor: Steven Rowley
From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus comes a novel about a struggling writer who gets his big break, with a little help from the most famous woman in America. After years of trying to make it as a writer in 1990s New York City, James Smale finally sells his novel to an editor at a major publishing house: none other than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Jackie--or Mrs. Onassis, as she's known in the office--has fallen in love with James's candidly autobiographical novel, one that exposes his own dysfunctional family. But when the book's forthcoming publication threatens to unravel already fragile relationships, both within his family and with his partner, James finds that he can't bring himself to finish the manuscript. Jackie and James develop an unexpected friendship, and she pushes him to write an authentic ending, encouraging him to head home to confront the truth about his relationship with his mother. Then a long-held family secret is revealed, and he realizes his editor may have had a larger plan that goes beyond the page... From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus comes a funny, poignant, and highly original novel about an author whose relationship with his very famous book editor will change him forever--both as a writer and a son.
The Boy Who Followed his Father into Auschwitz - Jeremy Dronfield
In 1939, Gustav Kleinmann, a Jewish upholsterer in Vienna, was seized by the Nazis. Along with his teenage son, Fritz, he was sent to Buchenwald in Germany. There began an unimaginable ordeal that saw the pair beaten, starved and forced to build the very concentration camp they were held in.
When Gustav was set to be transferred to Auschwitz, a certain death sentence, Fritz refused to leave his side. Throughout the horrors they witnessed and the suffering they endured, there was one constant that kept them alive- the love between father and son.
Based on Gustav's secret diary and meticulous archive research, this book tells his and Fritz's story for the first time - a story of courage and survival unparalleled in the history of the Holocaust.

Beyoncé's Netflix documentary, Homecoming, has arrived with a surprise: A new Beyoncé album.
The star, who perfected the art of stealth releases with a self-titled album in 2013, announced the new record just hours before Homecoming premiered.

  • Nici Wickes: Oven baked Easter doughnuts
Hot cross buns are one thing but how about these doughnuts, filled with sweetened cream cheese and jam and showered in sugar and spice? Yummo!
    2/3 cup milk, warmed
    2 tsps instant yeast
    2 heaped tbsps caster sugar
2 ½ cups high grade flour, plus more for dusting
    ¼ tsp salt
4 tbsps butter, melted + 2 tbsp extra, also melted
2 egg yolks 2 tsps vanilla extract
    Coating
    1/3 cup sugar
    ½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp each nutmeg & mix spice
    Filling
    1/3 cup cream cheese
    2 tbsps icing sugar
    1/3 raspberry jam
    1. In a small bowl, sprinkle yeast and 1 tbsp of the sugar over warmed milk. Leave to sit, covered, until it froths – about 10 minutes.
    2. In a large bowl measure out 2 cups of the flour, remaining sugar and salt. Make a well and pour in milk/yeast mixture as well as the melted butter, egg yolks and vanilla extract. Whisk vigorously to combine well liquid ingredients then start bringing in the flour. Mix until combined then knead in the bowl (add more of the flour if you need to) until smooth – about 5 minutes.
    3. Cover bowl and let rise in a 100˚F oven for 45 min or at room temperature for until doubled in size.
    4. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
    5. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and gently press or roll the dough out to just under 3cm thick. Cut circles using a cookie cutter, re-rolling scraps if needed to use all the dough. Place donuts on prepared baking tray and cover with a tea towel and let rise in a warm place until puffed.
    6. Bake centre of a preheated oven at 180 C for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden on top.
    7. Right out of the oven, brush each doughnut all over with extra melted butter and roll in a bowl of sugar/spice mix to coat lightly with sugar. Cool.
    8. Cut a deep slit in the side of each doughnut and pipe in cream then jam with a pastry bag.

  • Book review: Identity Crisis and The Hunting Party
This week, Catherine Raynes reviews two new exciting books for you to read.
    Identity Crisis - Ben Elton
Why are we all so hostile? So quick to take offence? Truly we are living in the age of outrage.
A series of apparently random murders draws amiable, old-school Detective Mick Matlock into a world of sex, politics, reality TV and a bewildering kaleidoscope of opposing identity groups. Lost in a blizzard of hashtags, his already complex investigation is further impeded by the fact that he simply doesn’t ‘get’ a single thing about anything anymore.
The Hunting Party - Lucy Fox
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands—the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.
The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps.
