  • Jane Goodall's strong words for climate change deniers
A renowned primatologist has given the cold shoulder to climate-change deniers.
Dr Jane Goodall is best known for ground breaking study on chimpanzees. Now, the 85-year-old spends 300 days of the year spreading the message about climate change.
She says that she never thought she would be a scientist, but now believes she has a mission to try and prevent the destruction of our natural world.
She told Jack Tame what she'd like to do with people who deny the reality of climate change.
"Let's go out to the Antarctica where the sea-ice is melting faster than anybody ever expected, and let's put them on the sea-ice and leave them there and see what happens."
Goodall says that those people don't really believe it isn't happening, but that the facts are "inconvenient" for them.
She is speaking ahead of her New Zealand later this month, with shows in Wellington and Auckland.
Despite her age, she says is still regularly touring because of the dark times the planet is going through.
"We're polluting air, water, and land, we're burning fossil fuels. All of this is leading to climate change, so because I was given a gift of communication, and people seem to listen, I feel I have to use it."
She says that she has to "speed up" as she gets older, because there is less and less time to spread the message.
Goodall, through her eponymous institute, is aiming to court more young people into her mission, describing children as the "future" who can save the plane.t
She says that children tend to love nature, but tragically become distracted by technology and materialistic matters as they get older.
"Roots and Shoots is trying to get young people out into nature. If you don't know about something, you can't care about it, and then you won't save it."

  • Bob Campbell: Wine recommendation - Dashwood 2018 Riesling
Wine: Dashwood 2018 Riesling, Marlborough $15
    Where I discovered it:

Haven’t featured a Riesling on the show for over a year
Not popular, my local supermarket features it in the “aromatic” section
Pinot Gris is also an aromatic wine but it has its own section
I reviewed it blind with other Rieslings when it was released a few months ago

    What does it taste like?

“Bright, fresh and tangy Riesling with impressive sweet/sour tension. Vibrant wine with lime, floral and sea air/mineral flavours. Great summer drinking especially at this price.”
It’s not dry but it’s not sweet – perhaps “medium/dry”?

    Why it’s a bargain:

Riesling is not top of the hit parade which limits the price, but if you like Riesling it is probably the best value wine made in this country.
It’s the sort of wine that can deliver quality even though its got a price tag of under $15.

    Where you can buy it?

I bought it at New World where it currently costs $14.99. I also found it at The Good Wine Co in Auckland where you can buy it online for $15.99 although they have a minimum purchase of $50 and a shipping fee of $3.99

    Food match?

I like to serve it well chilled with a Thai curry although it is delicious on its own without the complication of food.

    Will it keep?

Riesling has a reputation for ageing very well. With bottle age it develops more flavour and can get quite toasty, sometimes with a hint of kerosene characters, which doesn’t appeal to everybody.
I’d enjoy this wine over the next year or two whole it’s at its fruitiest best.

  • Jack Tame: Extinction report suggests moa footprints are just the beginning
They began early in the morning, gathering in the Autumn light in a muddy creek, a group of high vis vests, splashing in the water.
Pretty early they had the pump going, chugging and sluttering as it worked against the tide.
It was a great day to be on Twitter, watching every update.
Could I honestly have told you before yesterday that Moa footprints had never before been found in the South Island? No. But something about them - their size, their shape - felt so dinosaury. Moa prints, cut into the rock, millions of years old, and yet as if drawn by children in a kindergarten activity group.
Isn’t it amazing to think of moa crashing around New Zealand? As a boy, I used to love going to the Canterbury museum and looking at the mocked up exhibits of moa being hunted.
Scientists reckon they were more than three and a half metres tall in some instances. Just think about that. Three and a half metres! If you tilted my car on its nose and balanced it in the air it would be about the same height. It’s crazy.
Moa didn’t last long once people arrived in New Zealand. They were hunted by Māori and they had no defence. A couple of hundred years after the first New Zealanders arrived in Aotearoa, the moa was extinct.
In some ways it was a sorry little juxtaposition that moa footprints, evidence of something so magical, should be excavated in the same week as a devastating report on the state of our ecology.
The U.N reckons a million species are threatened with extinction, and that nature is declining at rates unprecedented in human history. Environmental destruction, consumption, and climate change, have put the World in a more perilous position than any time in the history of our species.
A few hundred more years, and museums will be excavating more than just moa prints.

  • Nici Wickes: Mother's Day hash browns
    Serves 6-8
800g kumara, orange and/or purple, grated
    1 medium potato, grated
    1 small onion, grated
    ½ cup chopped parsley
    2 tbsps fresh thyme leaves
¼ cup olive oil + extra for drizzling
2 tsps sea salt + decent grind of black pepper
200g hot or cold smoked salmon
    200g sour cream
    2-3 gherkins, diced
    Squeeze of lemon

Heat oven to 180 C. Line a roasting dish (approx. 20x30cm) with baking paper.
Squeeze excess liquid from grated kumara and potato – I use a tea towel and do it in batches.
In a large bowl combine grated vegetables with herbs, olive oil and seasoning. Transfer to prepared roasting dish and pat into an even layer. Drizzle with olive oil and cook for one hour or until crispy on top and bottom.
While this cooks prepare a platter of toppings: flake some smoked salmon and set aside. Mix together sour cream and gherkins with lemon juice
Serve squares of hash topped with sour cream and salmon with a sprinkling of parsley.

  • Andrew Dickens: Pink's Hurts 2B Human
Pink stunned audiences last year with her aerial-filled world tour, and now the pop star is back with her eighth studio album.
Andrew Dickens shared his review with Jack Tame:
"This is Pink being Pink, which is actually quite amazing.  All the songs are bangers.  It's notable for the use of classically organic instrumentation like guitars and pianos, and yet it still sounds modern.
"Pink's themes of regret and self empowerment are front and centre.  She is the most reliable superstar in play at the moment.  You could argue there's little growth but then again if nothing's broke why fix it.
"Listen to it in a car and sing your heart out.  8/10"

  • Ruud Kleinpaste: Autumn highlights nature's magic
To many, the changing colour on leaves is simply a sign of the seasons witching over.
However, what you may not know is that an amazing chemical recycling process is happening as those colours change.
Gardening expert Ruud Kleinpaste told Jack Tame that when leaves are shedding, all the soluble elements are removed and stored in the trunk, branches and twigs, to be used again next spring.
The colours highlight a "pigment strip tease", as Kleinpaste calls it. Yellow means the nitrogen is gone, red shows the phosphorus is recycled, while purple and orange is a sign potassium is withdrawn.
