  • Book review: Heads you win and Lenny’s Book of Everything
Catherine Raynes joined Jack Tame this morning to discuss two new books.
Heads You Win by Jeffrey Archer
From the master storyteller Jeffrey Archer, Heads You Win is the incredible and thrilling novel from the author of the Clifton Chronicles and Kane and Abel.Leningrad, Russia, 1968. Alexander Karpenko is no ordinary child, and from an early age, it is clear he is destined to lead his countrymen. But when his father is assassinated by the KGB for defying the state, he and his mother will have to escape from Russia if they hope to survive.
Lenny’s Book of Everything by Karen Foxlee
Lenny's younger brother has a rare form of gigantism and while Lenny's fiercely protective, it isn't always easy being the sister of 'the giant'. A book about finding good in the bad that will break your heart while raising your spirits in the way that only a classic novel can.

  • Kevin Milne: Why do we buy collectable items?
"There really isn't anything I have collected during my life which I have made money off. I would be surprised if anybody who collects old stuff ever really does.
Sure you fluke the odd lucky purchase, but they are the exceptions. Ask anyone who collects teaspoons or pottery, you never resell them at a profit. We buy these items because they are appealing. As we get older, these items remind us of our early years."

  • Nici Wickes: Brioche or loaf cake with ice cream & apple caramel recipe
Summer is on its way for sure so it’s time to indulge in an ice-cream sandwich, Sicilian style. Toasted brioche buns or thick slices of loaf cake work well for this decadent and fun dessert. The hero really is the caramel made with apple juice – yum!
Apple caramel – makes about 1 cup
1 cup Apple Press jazz juice
    1/3 cup brown sugar
    2-4 tbsps cream
Large pinch of salt to taste
    Serve with:
Store-bought brioche buns or thick slices of loaf cake, toasted
    Vanilla ice cream
    Fresh blueberries
    1. Simmer apple juice with brown sugar for 7-10 minutes or until it thickens. Add dash of cream and sprinkle of salt and let it bubble to form a beauitful caramel sauce. Keep warm.
    2. Toast brioche or thick slices of loaf cake. Set out on individual plates. Top with ice cream, some fresh blueberrries and drizzle with apple caramel sauce.

  • Jack Tame: President Trump comes out a winner from midterms
"I think Donald Trump has every right to be pretty pleased about the results from the midterm elections.
After all, it is the tradition for sitting presidents and their party's to lose ground after the midterm elections, and Trump didn't lose much ground.
By expanding the Republicans majority in the Senate, he has ensured he is able to pass any supreme court judges he fancies over the next few years.
The President will turn the Democrats control of the house into a positive. All of his failures he will turn into the Democrats failures."

  • Book review: The House Across the Street and The Reckoning
The House Across the Street by Lesley Pearce, Penguin $38
23 year-old Katy Speed is fascinated by the house across the street. The woman who lives there, Gloria, is the most glamorous neighbour on the avenue, owning a fashionable dress shop in Bexhill-on-Sea. But who is the woman who arrives in the black car most Saturdays while Gloria is at work? Sometimes she brings women to the house, other times they have children.
The Reckoning by John Grisham, Hachette $50
Pete Banning was Clanton, Mississippi’s favorite son—a decorated World War II hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning he rose early, drove into town, and committed a shocking crime.  Pete’s only statement about it—to the sheriff, to his lawyers, to the judge, to the jury, and to his family—was: “I have nothing to say.” He was not afraid of death and was willing to take his motive to the grave.

  • Gardening: Lemon Tree Borer
Ruud Kleinpaste gives us his top tips for stopping lemon tree borer.
    Life’s lesson for gardeners:
Do not prune your citrus/lemons and other susceptible plants in spring, summer and early autumn, as that would allow the borer beetles an obvious place to oviposit and start the trouble all over again.
So you can’t “cut out” the borer damage in the warmer months of the year
    Instead:
    1) find the toilet holes with plugs of borer frass (poo/sawdust) hanging from it
    2) insert a fine plastic “straw” nozzle from an insecticide can into the hole and tunnel and fog the larva to death in situ.
    3) alternatively: grab a piano-wire or guitar string and poke it into the hole to spear the lemontree borer grub up its bottom, so to speak - I found the best string to use is the G-string J
There is no point in spraying your citrus tree/bush with an insecticide, as the larva is totally protected inside the branch/twig – it’ll survive
There’s perhaps some merit in covering the winter pruning cuts with some pruning sealant.
