  • Technology: Apple's new launches and a Twitter reinvention
US correspondent Paul Stenhouse joins Jack to discuss the latest technology news.

It's Apple's turn to launch new things ... AGAIN!

    Two things to note:
    1) Apple has given the MacBook Air a drastic and much needed upgrade. This machine was the startup stalwart until it lagged behind in features and the MacBook Pro lost a lot of weight.
It's a great contender again - the new thinner and lighter MacBook Air features a brilliant Retina display, Touch ID, the latest-generation keyboard, and a Force Touch trackpad.
    2) Here's where it gets tricky.. because for a similar price you can get the new iPad Pro which features LTE - mobile data - built in. It's got a thinner bezel, Face ID, and USB-C to connect displays, cameras and more.

Twitter is looking to reinvent itself?

This is a little strange, because they're doing it in a way that most software companies don't do.. they're showing you ideas!
Some of those: They want to show who's online.. they want to give you thought starters for tweets.. and they to improve how they show conversations and they want to show status updates.
That's the strangest bit, because Twitter used to basically be a stream of status updates. Maybe they're trying to get back to that?

Peter Fitzsimons is an Australian author, journalist, ex-wallaby and currently the chair of the Australian Republic Movement.
He has recently released a new book, Mutiny on the Bounty, which is a saga of sex, sedition, mayhem and mutiny, and survival against extraordinary odds.
It’s one of history’s truly great stories, the Mutiny on the Bounty, brought to life by best-selling author and Sydney Morning Herald journalist, Peter FitzSimons.
The book recreates the dramatic story of Captain William Bligh and Christian Fletcher in the South Pacific in the year 1789.

  • Kevin Milne: Thank goodness for local appliance shops
"Thank goodness for the little New Zealand businesses which import overseas appliances.
Apple's attitude towards replacing batteries in iPhones is a classic example. Why is it the official Apple store is so much more difficult and expensive compared to going to a little business here?
More often or not, they can provide the service at a fraction of the cost with the added bonus of exceptional customer service."

  • Jack Tame: Why don't we support locally owned banks?
"I was fascinated with Mike Hoskings interview with John Key yesterday talking about the banking regulations.
What we do know is that banks are posting huge profits at the moment. The big four banks are some of the most profitable companies in New Zealand.
I want to make sure all of the money the banks make out of me, stays in the country, I did the same thing with my KiwiSaver provider.
If you could choose between buying a coffee from Starbucks or a locally owned cafe, I know I would choose the place where the money stays in NZ, so why not do the same with banking?"

  • Music review: Harry Lyons 'To The Sea'
Andrew Dickens has been listening to Harry Lyons solo album, To The Sea.
They don't make them like this anymore. Classic Ponsonby Rock n Roll grooves. A number of the songs reminiscent of Lyin in the Sand with a woozy charm. It's fair to say that you at times wonder what these songs would sound like with Brazier singing them, but this is a lovely document from a man who never stopped giving to music.
    Andrew's verdict:  7/10
