  • Ruud Kleinpaste: Start planting your strawberries!
    It's time to think about next spring's strawberries!
    A few great varieties that will work well throughout the country:
    CamaRosa
    Popular Camarosa produces medium sized mid red fruit with firm flesh and excellent flavour. Producing a light, early crop followed by a heavy summer crop; high yielding.
    Pajaro
    Large, bright red fruit with firm flesh and excellent flavour. Pajaro are vigorous; high yields
    Monterey
    ‘Ever-bearing’ Monterey is very popular with organic growers as it has a high resistance to most strawberry disease. The fruit is large and has a delicious sweet flavour
    Yolo is a variety that’s great for south island conditions

    Culture: Nice raised bed (they like good drainage); good organic matter well worked-in
    Some fertiliser at planting time and change growing spots every other year to minimize root diseases building up;
    Full sun and regular water – not soaking wet!
    When fruit is ripening, try to keep it off the ground, by putting some “straw” underneath the fruit;
    Some people use bits of off-cut wood etc.
     Clever alternative: grow them in hanging baskets – that way the fruit will not be in touch with the soil.
    Good potting mix, regular watering etc.
     Plant material: Either buy yourself a heap of small, new plants at the nurseries or… if you already have strawberries in the garden: snip off the strongest “runner” that were produced during summer/autumn; each “runner” will make its own roots and can become new mother plants for the coming growing season

  • Cauliflower and walnut tabbouleh
    Toasting the walnuts until golden brown will add a rich flavour to this salad. Should you have walnut oil, use half walnut and olive for a truly delicious dressing. Pomegranates are a luxury, so substitute dried cranberries and, if you can, use handfuls of mint and basil or mint, basil and parsley —herbs make a salad.

    Ingredients
    ½ Cauliflower1½ cups Walnut pieces, toasted and chopped1 cup Olives, chopped and pitted, use green or black, plain or marinated½ cup Sunflower seeds½ cup Pumpkin seeds1 large handful Mint leaves, picked1 handful Basil leaves, coarsely chopped1 Pomegranate, seeds only, optional
    For the lemon and honey dressing⅓ cup Olive oil⅓ cup Cider vinegar⅓ cup Honey, well flavoured1 Garlic clove, peeled and mashed to a paste with a pinch of salt2 tsp Mustard, mild1 Lemon, grated rind only

    Cut finely across the face of the cauliflower’s tightly furled florets. Tiny cauliflower pearls will cascade on to the board. Finely chop the thicker stem pieces too. For the stalk, peel the tough outer skin away and chop the centre part. Do not throw this part out, it’s wasteful and besides it’s packed with flavour and texture.

    Into a large bowl toss together the cauliflower, walnuts, olives, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, herbs and pomegranate, if using. Whisk the dressing ingredients together and add to the cauliflower mixture and toss. Season with salt and allow the salad to sit for 30 minutes to allow the dressing to seep into the cauliflower pearls.
    Serve at room temperature. Delicious with Moroccan spice-infused barbecued meats.

  • Kevin Milne: How do you find the real measure of your property's worth?
    How do you get the real measure of the value of your home? Rating values or RV's are just for the purpose of calculating rates not an overall indication of the current market value. So how do house sellers figure out how much to reasonably ask for their property, Kevin Milne gives some advice.

  • Music Review: Lily Allen, No Shame
    This week Andrew reviews Lily Allen's fourth album No Shame.
    I’m a fan.  Always have been.  Her incredible observational eye combined with a natty line in street poetry and dancehall rhythms combines with her sing song little voice to be something unique. It’s from the heart and brutally honest.  For some not au fait with her work they may find the voice and style not engaging, there’s no bravura singing here.  But strap on some headphones and listen to the lyrics and you’ll be entranced.  8/10

    Oceans 8 starring Sandra Bullock, Care Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kahling, Dakota Fanning and Sarah Paulson

    Tea with the Dames starring Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith
    Together, they're 342 years old. They're in their seventh decade of cutting-edge, epoch-defining performances on stage and on screen. Funny, smart, sharp, competitive, tearful, hilarious, savage, clever, caustic, cool, gorgeous, poignant, irreverent, iconic, old, and unbelievably young. Special friends, special women and special dames: a chance to hang out with them all, at the same table, at the same time, and enjoy sparkling and unguarded conversation spliced with a raft of archive.
