  • Sam Chapman | From the Vault

Sam Chapman is a makeup artist, content creator and businesswoman who joined me on the podcast to have a frank and open discussion about mental health.

At the time of recording, back in the summer of 2018, both Sam and I had made strides with our own mental health and having this conversation was with the aim of creating a safe resource for anyone listening who may be going through something similar.

Sometimes, when you’re struggling, it can feel very lonely and both Sam and I were keen to have a conversation that would make anyone feeling isolated, alone and helpless feel comforted that they weren’t alone and that there were options and ways to move forward positively.

In the two and half years since this episode was published I’ve had numerous messages from you, my most-excellent listeners, saying how useful this episode was, how much you appreciated Sam’s honesty and how it helped you understand your own mental health and have empathy for other people experiencing something similar too.

This is a conversation I think back to time and time again, and given the year we’ve had and how 2020 has plunged people deeper into mental and emotional distress, or caused people to experience these things for the first time, I thought revisiting this chat may be helpful.

In this conversation, @samchapman and I discuss:

    • What it’s like to feel depressed and why no two depressions look the same.
    • Why sometimes it’s the people around you who’ll sense your struggle before you do - and why that’s ok.
    • The building blocks of recovery and how little things can have a huge impact.
    • How not all relationships survive your recovery and how to make peace with that.
    • How depression can sometimes feel like a slow disconnection from yourself and how to reconnect - and much more.

    • How staying connected, via video calls, has been a saving grace during lockdown in Toronto.
    • How she disconnects from work while also working from home 24/7.

Furthermore, since we last spoke I have used her workouts, which are available via her instagram @aliceliveing, and they have completely changed my body - so I can personally attest to how positive an impact her content can have.

  • Gretchen Rubin | From the Vault

Gretchen Rubin is a bestselling author and podcaster whose area of expertise is happiness and she joins me on the podcast to unpick how to navigate a path towards happiness.

This episode was recorded in December 2017 and I had time with Gretchen to discuss her book The Four Tendencies, which gives insight into four personality types based on how we react to internal and external expectations.

Not only is it an interesting way to understand oneself, it also offers valuable insight into how other people process the world.

In this conversation, @gretchenrubin and I discuss:

    • Why she’s a ‘happiness bully’ but how that has helped her find her own happiness and help others find theirs.
    • How we can better our personality by interrogating how we react to inner and outer expectations, as explored in her book The Four Tendencies.
    • How to know if your tendency is one of a questioner, obliger, rebel or upholder.
    • Why, when our basic needs are met, we can then explore what happiness means to us.
    • How times of stress, change and anxiety can affect our happiness.
    • Why 50% of our happiness is genetic (and what the other 50% is made of).
    • How meeting Oprah impacted her and her work.

  • Jen Sincero | From the Vault

Jen Sincero is a bestselling author, success coach and motivational speaker who, after transforming her own life, turned her attention to to helping others transform theirs.

I first read Jen’s books about four years ago and they lit a fire under me at a time when I was feeling as though the world was against me - and the world was winning.

Unlike other self-help books Jen’s tone is no-nonsense mixed with tough love - there’s a directness to her books that make their wisdom impossible to ignore.

In this conversation, which was originally published in June 2017, @jensincero and I discuss:

    • Why we all have the ability within us to create what we desire.
    • Why it’s important to evaluate and understand your relationship with money.
    • Why it’s not uncommon for women to subconsciously shy away from making money.
    • You don’t have to act like a man in order to be financially wealthy.
    • The importance of getting outside of your comfort zone.
    • Why taking responsibility for your situation is the best starting point for effecting change.
    • Why listening to others doubts and fears can be damaging and how vital it is to surround yourself with the people who’ll cheer you on.
    • Why the word ‘realistically’ is so ridiculous.
    • The power of visualisation and going to your ‘spiritual gym’.
    • Why rejection is proof that you’re trying.

  • Marisa Peer | From the Vault

Marisa Peer is a world-renowned speaker, rapid transformational therapy trainer and best-selling author who joined me on the podcast in January 2017 to discuss the power to change that's within us all - even if you have to go looking for it.

My conversation with Marisa had a really profound impact on me personally and I know, from the feedback I've received in the nearly four years the show has been live, that it's one that has really resonated with you, my most-excellent listeners, too, which is why I wanted to revisit it in this series.

Marisa has over thirty years experience, has worked with CEOs, rock stars and Hollywood A-listers, given talks with millions of views online and, as you'll hear, specialises in making rapid, sustainable changes.

In this episode @marisapeertherapy and I discuss:

    • The power of telling yourself 'you are enough'.
    • Why we're never taught self-esteem and how to achieve it.
    • Why self-worth is such a vital building block to emotional wellbeing.
    • Why solid self-worth can help you avoid falling into the comparison trap.
    • Why we fear rejection.
    • How she has been able to 'hack' the brain to achieve long-lasting positive change.
    • Why it's important not to make something that isn't good for you familiar.
    • What's different about the brains of the successful, multi-millionaires she works with.
    • How to overcome the issues you may have with food.
    • How our body image can be linked to much more than how we look, our weight or our clothes size.
    • The tools to use to attract love into your life.
