Eternity Martis is a Toronto-based journalist, author and advocate. She’s also a best-selling author of her first book, “They Said This Would Be Fun - Race, Campus Life, and Growing Up.” Eternity’s work focuses on issues of race and gender, taking deep dives into her own experiences and sharing them with the world. Her stories are real, raw, and relatable.
Our conversation covers so much about the journey through writing this book and many of the topics and experiences shared within. We talk about setting boundaries and the challenge that comes with having to reassert yourself and reestablish boundaries time and time again - but how crucial that is for our physical, mental, sexual, emotional and spiritual health. We talk about what love really is - and what it isn’t, and the hard lessons that come with navigating love on it’s own.
We discuss the theme of abandonment that is laced throughout Eternity’s story, and how she’s had to navigate both gender and race as a mixed woman; her Mom from Pakistan and her Dad from Jamaica.
I get excited about all of my conversations with my guests, but there is something about the level of relatability and raw vulnerability in this conversation with Eternity that really got my heart racing.
**Episode Trigger Warning - Contains content relating to sexual abuse and assault; some explicit language.**

This one is good. This drive will keep you in stitches, between our food chats - obviously - and then deep diving into the realm of glamping essentials… including juicy spidey dogs.
Jenn and Amanda both share some snowboarding stories as well as what burying the hatchet looked like one day for Amanda while on a hot springs hiking adventure.

Today’s drive is the best yet - because we’re actually together! Like in real life! We chat about Amanda’s drive from the Kootenays to the Island to visit Jenn in Ucluelet.
We laugh a LOT, and talk about things from being cheap on gas to squirrels (and the lack there of while in Australia) to Jenn losing her Dad’s ashes at the airport… but did she really?!
You may need a tissue though… not for sad tears, but if you’re ready to join Jenn while she cry-laughs while holding onto her thoughts about meat and cheese sticks. Like, get your sh*t together, Porter.

Life long journalist and creative writer Tamara Sellman went back to school at 47 to study sleep technology. A lover of reading and writing, she was left in total shock and a space of concern when she lost her ability to read or comprehend the words in her textbook while going to study for exams.
Scans and tests confirmed her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis, (MS) and led Tamara into a space of grief as she worked through processing this new information. As a writer, she worked through her grief and new diagnosis with words and writing.
Along with finding her people and learning to accept where she’s at in every moment, Tamara’s time camping and being in nature allowed her the time and the space to process and write her book, titled Intention Tremor.

Rebekah was a guest on The Safe Haven podcast on April 23, and in the conversation, I asked Rebekah how she was able to be her best self for her kids while grieving. Her answer was that she wasn’t her best self for her kids. I loved how raw and real Bex’s answer was. Today, Rebekah elaborates on what she meant, and the emotions she has experienced along her healing journey after losing her parents, while being a mom herself.
Rebekah is also the creator behind the “Big Messy” book series, and came up with a plot line for a book about death and grief called “Zara’s Big Messy Goodbye.” Rebekah wanted to provide information and tools to children, adults, and families in the process, and so she connected with Gina Moffa, LCSW.
This is a slightly longer episode with a different format, but I promise you it’s worth the listen. The episode starts with Rebekah Borucki, and then we welcome Gina Moffa onto the call. This episode and conversations in this episode mean a lot to me.
The combination of Bex and Gina in the second half of the episode discussing the characters in the Zara Series, what the books cover and why, and in particular what children experience when someone dies is breathtaking.

Gianna Shamone joins us today on The Safe Haven, opening up about how she’d lost herself in a relationship – a relationship that resulted in a groundbreaking break-up.
As she navigated her healing, she began writing poetry. In addition to the healing, writing itself brought forward even more than she could have ever expected. As Gianna wrote, the idea of publishing came to mind. She was flooded with limiting beliefs about how no one would be interested in her work, but she pushed through and promised herself she’d complete the book and publish it.
Gianna shares her range of emotions along this journey, and even reads us one of her favourite poems in her book, Finding Me.
