Defining and planning the key areas of your business

This second episode ties with the previous one about Beginning with the End in Mind. After being able to have an end goal in mind, it’s now a good time for business owners to define which areas of their business do they need to build a system for.

Edward emphasizes how much he favors simplicity in terms of building out systems for his business.

This for me is a very important insight because most business owners have this tendency to over-complicate systems which can be disruptive to the development of everything.

“Systems stand for ‘save yourself time energy and money’.”

Coincidence or not, this acronym given by Ed is astoundingly fitting when you think of what the true value of systems really is.

Systems are the foundation and building blocks of your business. They help structure the flow and growth of most areas in your business.

Beginning with the End in Mind

“You plan to fail if you fail to plan”. This saying applies to just about any trade business out there. Most of your business’ systems need to be planned out ahead of time for you to prepare contingencies in case things don’t turn out as expected.

This is where beginning with the end in mind becomes extremely handy and important.

In the first episode of this series on Strategic Planning that I’m conducting with my great mate Edward Plant, we discuss why beginning with the end in mind is a crucial first step to strategic planning.

Edward Plant was in the service for almost two decades so he knows much about the importance of preparation and using the end picture as a starting point for planning.

“We don’t need a 28-page document that we never use. We need something we can pick up and run with on a regular basis.”

Ed speaks of this one big page in the military that contained all the current missions and a chain of command outline in case an official passes away.

According to him, this is similar to what businesses should have. Not multiple pages of documents, but a one-page blueprint that owners can pick up and run on a regular basis.

Google Adwords can get very tricky for small to medium size businesses. In this podcast, I am joined by Ilana Wechsler as she discusses her vast experience with Adwords and how exactly can businesses take advantage of cost-per-click campaigns.

To enlighten our listeners out there, cost-per-click marketing is a strategy within Google that allows businesses to bid on high-traffic keywords. Google makes its earning by charging any website who bids on that keyword everytime the paid ad gets a click.

In this podcast, we use the keyword 'plumber sydney'. We discuss how the bid for this particular keyword exploded into $50 per click which just absolutely makes no sense for start-up businesses to invest on.

"You need to nurture those existing customers because they're the ones who are most likely to come back and refer you to people."

Despite being an expert in Google Adwords, Ilana emphasizes the true value of repeat customers. It is no secret that paid ads can increase the onpour of leads into your business.

However, being able to take care of your existing pool of customers might just take things to the next level.

As we wrapped off this insightful episode, Ilana mentions the importance of efficient location targeting when it comes to paid ads. According to her, it pays to create that extra layer of filter by specifically exculding locations you would not want to get reached by your ads.

Moving Forward After An Incident

After discussing how business owners can respond to incidents at work, we wrap off this awesome series by talking about moving on after an incident.

It's almost a necessity for a business owner to examine the person who was hurt by the incident to ensure that they are completely back in shape.

The last thing you would want is for another incident happening to the same person just because he came back to work not fully recovered yet.

"If they're back to 100 percent health then back to work is the best place to be."

In this final episode, we wrap up this awesome series by tackling the ABCs of moving forward after an incident. Believe it or not, how you handle issues that arise after the incident is just as important as your actual response to it.
