Chit chat is a new segment, where my friend Nathan Cooper from and I discuss and issue that's currently circulating the news, or current affairs. Nathan runs a plumbing company in Brisbane Australia and he's a wealth of knowledge and experience on many interesting topics. These podcasts are 100% unrehearsed. In the news lately there was a discussion about young tradies that were working the mining boom and what has happened to them since the mines have taken a downturn.

It's an interesting read as it talks about young people that have worked in the mines in the midst of the Australian mining boom. They were making huge amounts of money and living the fly in, fly out lifestyle, with little expenses, then once they lost those jobs, they were forced to face a reality that not many of them ever had.

Sometimes it's impossible to comprehend where you could potentially take your business. As business owners, we all too often get caught out thinking too small and not lifting the lid on what our true potential really is.

Episode 4: Taking money off the table...and investing it wisely.

"The idea of getting into business is to make money" Says Ben. Don't confuse the reason you're in business. Too often we get caught up in what Ben calls 'the fluffy stuff' and we lose focus of what we're doing.

Yes, you have to deliver a great service and a fantastic product, however when you company is making money, you should be talking money off the table.  More to the point, when you're taking money off the table, you should be investing it in something that can diversify your income streams. 

In this podcast, Ben gives some solid advise on why you need to be taking money off the table and what you should be doing with it. Man I wish I had have heard this 15 years ago!

Episode 3: How to handle negative media

We've all seen the television shows where tradies get picked on for various things. It's normally current affair style programs that have a disgruntled customers angle on a scenario.

As Ben states, the bigger your company is, the bigger a target you become. Your peers don't like you because you're taking work from them, if your customers make complaints, it's rarely dealt with by the technician who was on site, resulting in conflict and that can sometimes result in negative media attention (which they love and thrive on).

On two occasions, Ben was targeted by the media. In the first instance, he was not prepared and as a result learned an expensive lesson, however in the second instance, they had built systems around these scenarios and avoided the episode airing.

This is great podcast, which can teach you how to be prepared for the worst and avoid getting in those scenarios in the first place.

Lots of us have aspirations to make a lot of money, however we don't always consider the fact that the bigger the business, the bigger the problems. Sure the rewards can be grander, however as Ben discusses in this episode there's bad that comes with the good, so you need to be prepared.

It's it's peak, Bens company was turning $12,000,000 a year and in this episode he discusses what comes with that package. The systems that need to be in place, staff, management, customers, becoming a target to your peers and media, etc.

Too often we hear only about the good times associated with running a business, which is why this episode is a refreshing and honest portrayal of both the good and the bad aspects, coming from a man that has been there and walked the walk.

Episode 1: Running a lean business

In this episode Ben and I discuss how to run a lean business and how to NOT over capitalise. Very often when you're making money, it's easy to over spend. The more you make, the more you seem to spend and the cloud of success seems to cover it up.

Ben has been there and done that and he says that if he had his time agin, he'd tighten the screws on spending, especially when you're making lots of money as more often that not, you'll have more leverage with suppliers, etc.

Running a lean business means having a firm understanding of your costs, which in return affects everything right down to what you're charging and what you're paying your staff.

We've chosen this topic to be the first of the 'Big Business' series for a reason. Enjoy.

Warning! If your website is NOT mobile friendly as of May, 2016, you're in BIG trouble.

This has been a long time coming, however now it looks like we're about to see some serious action from our friends over at Google.

'Mobilegeddon' as it was named by the industry last year refers to the algorithm update that Google released last year, favouring websites that are mobile friendly.

Due to the increased use of mobile devices like phones and tablets, Google released an update that favours websites that are optimised to mobile, over those that aren't on searches that come through a mobile device.

This basically means that if someone is searching for you from a mobile device and your website is NOT mobile friendly, then it has less chance of showing up in a search query than another website that has been optimised for mobile.

As of May, 2016, Google has announced that it is going to be progressively increasing this signal, meaning that if you're not mobile responsive, you're in big trouble.

This is going to have a serious effect on businesses that choose not to act, so I strongly encourage anyone that this is going to effect, click on the link below, so we can get your mobile friendly website set up for you ASAP.

Trades come in many types and forms.

It's common to associate a trade with industries like builders, plumbers, electricians and mechanics, however there are other trades that tend to fly under the banner somewhat, like butchers, hairdressers and in the case of today's guest, chefs.
