Britt Frank was a drug addict (she's smoked meth out of lightbulbs!), love addict, codependent, borderline personality disordered, clinically depressed, eating disordered and anxious hot mess of a human—despite having degrees and lots of letters after her name, she knows what it’s like to be stuck. 

In this episode, Britt sits down with The Two Jess(es) and explains the process of how celebrating the tiny little "yeses" in our every day is what we need to focus on as we decide we are ready to move from stuck to thriving. She also drops a truth bomb, which is super hard for Jess B to hear. 

Meet Britt!
Britt Frank, MSW, LSCSW, SEP is a clinician, educator and trauma
specialist. She speaks and writes widely about the mental health myths that
keep us stuck and stressed. Britt received her BA from Duke University and
her MSW from the University of Kansas, where she later became an award-
winning adjunct professor. She is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and
Level 3 trained in the Internal Family Systems therapeutic model. Britt was
a primary therapist at a drug and alcohol treatment center, an inpatient
therapist at a children’s psychiatric hospital, and now owns a private

Jess and Jess are both very familiar with anxiety. But is it true anxiety or false anxiety? Or is it both, at the same time? Dr. Ellen Vora, holistic psychiatrist and acupuncturist, takes a functional medicine approach to her patients when they come to her with anxiety symptoms. Dr. Vora maintains that oftentimes we feel anxiety symptoms because there is something out of alignment within our bodies. She starts with asking questions about food, sleep, hormone balancing, and the like- and more often than not, anxious states of being can be leveled out by practicing good sleep hygiene, taking gluten out of the diet, getting off birth control or leveling out blood sugar.
A thoughtful conversation about anxiety as a cue to the deeper parts of our body, mind and spirit that need us to prioritize our attention on what matters most.

ELLEN VORA, MD, is a holistic psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University, and she is board-certified in psychiatry and integrative holistic medicine. This episode has been TWO YEARS  in the making! When Jess and Jess started WeSTAT, their vision was to hold live recordings in their community where their audience and supporters could attend, and be involved in the conversation- and then the pandemic hit.
Finally, after so many pivots and plan changes, TTJ(es) were able to hold their FIRST of what they hope will be MANY live podcast recordings with an actual audience...of REAL PEOPLE- not just over a computer screen!
The topic of conversation for the evening was FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS, and it turns out- JessK doesn't consider JessB her friend (what??) and that the audience members had a whole lot to contribute to the conversation.
Same Jess and Jess- lots of laughter and round and round question asking, but a very different vibe with really thoughtful contributions from the audience, as well as hard questions.

Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus, who wrote her PhD thesis on vibrators and women, is bringing all the things when it comes to what she says is the most underused tool in a woman's sexual tool kit.
According to Dr. Bat Sheva, 3 out of 10 women orgasm from the sex we see on TV- 3 OUT OF 10 PEOPLE. Meaning, you are weird if you CAN orgasm from intercourse alone. 7-8 women can have an orgasm with a hand or a mouth, and 94.3% of women can orgasm with the use of a vibrator.

Meet Dr. Bat Sheva!
Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus is a certified sex therapist and the author of Sex Points: Reclaim Your Sex Life with the Revolutionary Point System. Dr. Marcus is the Clinical Director of Maze Women’s Sexual Health, the largest independent sexual health center in the country. She wrote her dissertation on women and vibrator use while earning her Doctor of Philosophy in human sexuality from the Institute of Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. She also has a Master’s in public health from the same institution. She is a licensed social worker with a Master’s degree from Columbia University.

Dr. Marcus has worked as the executive director of not-for-profit institutions and corporations, medical practices and laboratories. In addition to being featured in a NY Times article, she is a frequent guest on radio, podcasts and has lectured both nationally and overseas on a wide variety of women’s issues.

Pandemic Parenting  is now a buzzword, a style of parenting even- a thing those with children at home, especially young ones- are still trying to figure out how to navigate and survive. We are emotionally fatigued- we are so tired, and we are all out of words for how to describe it even. So a collective of women outside of Boston decided to get together and stand in a parking lot and collectively scream. And Melinda Wenner Moyer has written about it in her Atlantic article: Covid Parenting Has Passed the Point of Absurdity which signaled a simultaneous scream of understanding.
As Jess and Jess continue to focus on self-care for the month of February- giving space to this important conversation, whether it includes words or not, feels vitally important to address. What do we do when we just have run out of steam? When we just don't have the words to explain how we are feeling, and we can't seem to find the strength to do the mental gymnastics of who can go where and when and wondering if that sore throat or runny nose means we should isolate or quarantine?
While there's not a whole lot of advice in this one, there is space for the collective understanding and non-judgmental commiseration.
