  • Serving the Underserved through Court Appointed Special Advocates with Darcy Hubbard

Send me a Text Message about the show!

As of 2018, there were approximately 437,283 children in foster care, nationwide. That is a lot of children who may not have someone to advocate on their behalf in court.

Our fourth, and final interview highlighting extraordinary women who are making the world a better place, this is grass roots work at it's most fundamental practice.

Court Appointed Special Advocates originated in Seattle, Washington where, in 1977, a Superior Court Judge, David Soukup, developed a pilot program for volunteer advocates, named Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA volunteers, who would be trained to serve as the “eyes and ears” of the judge into the environments and circumstances of abused and neglected children and to serve as the voice for each child in Court.

In this episode, The Two Jess(es) sit down for a REAL conversation with Fairfax County, Virginia CASA Executive Director, Darcy Hubbard about the life changing work a committed volunteer can make in a child's life who has been passed through the system.
An informative episode about the possibilities of impacting at risk youth through the practice of advocacy and collaboration.

  • Falling "Through The Cracks" with NPR's 1A Senior Producer and Investigative Reporter, Jonquilyn Hill

Send me a Text Message about the show!

In our third episode in this series that celebrates the incredible work women are doing for International Women's Week, The Two Jess(es) sit down for a conversation with investigative reporter and NPR's Executive Producer, Jonquilyn Hill about her new podcast Through the Cracks. WAMU's new series investigates the disappearance of 8-year-old Relisha Rudd, who disappeared from a DC homeless shelter in 2014.

Through her work, Jonquilyn continues to bring dignity to the forefront as she asks the really difficult, and often uncomfortable, questions related to class that divide a city like Washington DC. She addresses the underlying issues that have formed the infrastructures that allow people, children like Ralisha, fall through the cracks.

Yet another inspiring woman who is asking hard questions, waiting patiently for answers, and continues to make disenfranchised voices heard as she continues to tell stories that need to be told, must be witnessed, and demand to be understood, in order to make lasting change for those in our communities who are the deepest in need.

    Meet Jonquilyn Hill!

Jonquilyn Hill is host of the investigative podcast Through The Cracks from WAMU and PRX. She's also a senior producer for NPR's weekday news-talk show 1A, and was on the team that helped launch the show. Before joining WAMU, she worked on NPR’s 2016 Elections Desk.

Jonquilyn grew up in Kansas, Missouri, and attended high school in New Mexico, where she volunteered at NPR member station KUNM. She graduated from Howard University where she majored in journalism and minored in political science.

Prior to producing public radio, she worked at NBC’s Washington Bureau and for NY1. She's called D.C. home for over a decade.

  • Periods Don't Stop in a Pandemic: Dignity through Menstrual Equity with BRAWS Founder Holly Seibold

Send me a Text Message about the show!

For this second episode in the We Should Talk About Women Celebration, The Two Jess(es) sit down with Holly Seibold, founder and CEO of the non-profit organization BRAWS (Bringing Resources to Aid Women's Shelters). BRAWS provides pads, tampons, bras and underwear to shelters, schools, prisons, and food pantries to women who may need them. But more than feminine hygiene products, Holly and her team provides women with dignity around a subject that still makes people so uncomfortable. Yet it is one of the simplest problems to solve.

Holly educates Jess and Jess on the issues around Period Poverty and Menstrual Equity- something that really needs to be spotlighted in the COVID times we are living in right now. Holly's commitment and passion for equal rights for women who menstruate is inspiring and motivating, and exactly the kind of spirit that IS what the international woman is all about.

    Meet Holly Siebold!
Holly Seibold is the Founder and Executive Director of BRAWS: Bringing Resources to Aid Women's Shelters. In partnership with generous individuals, foundations, and businesses in the community, Holly and her team of dedicated staff and volunteers have distributed over two million period products and undergarments to women and girls in crisis. In a little more than five years, Holly has built one of the most recognized local nonprofit organizations in the DC region.

Holly began her career in the nonprofit sector before becoming an educator in the public school system. Transitioning from the classroom to a small business owner in 2010, Holly launched a successful educational firm, offering STEM consulting services and educational programs to clients.

Holly is a fierce advocate for women's rights, testifying in Washington, DC and Richmond in favor of the repeal of the tampon tax and an increased access to menstrual supplies for all girls and women in shelters, schools, jails, and prisons. Holly’s advocacy led to the successful passage of DC Law 21-201 (The Feminine Hygiene and Diapers Sales Tax Exemption Amendment Act of 2016), the 2019 Virginia Senate Bill 1715 (The Dignity Act), and the 2020 Virginia House Bill 405 - mandating menstrual supplies in school bathrooms. Holly also is a co-founder of the Virginia Menstrual Equity Coalition (VMEC), a statewide coalition that mobilizes supporters to collectively take action on the injustice of menstrual inequity. As a result of these efforts and more, Virginia’s General Assembly passed the 2018 House Bill 83 unanimously, requiring correctional facilities to provide menstrual supplies on demand and at no charge to inmates. Holly describes the evolution of this bill in her published piece, “
Free to Bleed: Virginia House Bill 83 and the Dignity of Menstruating Inmates,” in Volume 22 of the University of Richmond’s Public Interest Law Review.

Exposing issues that much too often remain in the dark, Holly has educated the public on solutions to problems that result from inequity. She has participated in several prominent panels, including Netroots Nation 2018, “Menstrual Equity: Practical Action to Public Policy” and Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY), “The Case for Menstrual Equity: How Policies Surrounding Menstruation Affect Outcomes for Women.” She has also presented a TedX Talk on this very issue.  Holly has also been featured in multiple national and local media outlets, but most notably in the Washington Post article, "
The Once-Whispered Topic of Women's Menstruation Now Has Political Cachet."

Holly proudly serves as an appointee of the Virginia Council on Women, an advisory council in the Executive

Send me a Text Message about the show!

LADIES. Pop in some ear buds, and get comfy. Dr. Bat Sheva is about to blow your sex socks off,  and we're not being metaphorical here!

Dr. Bat Sheva, Clinical Director of Maze Women's Sexual Health, breaks it down- why you might not want to be having sex right now- and her newly released book  Sex Points: Reclaim your Sex Life with a Multi-Point System has the answers to getting you back into bed! The Two Jess(es) have (as always) the most fun, talking about sex, vibrators, the M word, and the BIG OOO (and so much more!) Dr. Marcus is here to answer your questions, and what she can't answer in this hour, she most certainly will in her book as she outlines her multi point system for identifying the areas that need help.

With comic relief and an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience, Dr. Bat Sheva blows the lid off stigma associated with not wanting to have sex, painful sex, sex for one, and normalizes the conversation. Her message, while lively and often times hilarious, is really one of hope. If you are a woman, or identify as one, and have lost your sex drive,  your libido is lacking, or you can't turn the To-Do list off in your mind....well, that is something we really think we should be talking about!

  • We Should Talk About Migraine, Why it's Misunderstood and How to Blow Through the Stigma

Send me a Text Message about the show!

It is estimated that over 40 million Americans, and one billion people worldwide suffer from migraine disease. What is migraine disease? And how serious is it? Here to explain from their own personal experiences, this migraine advocate Eileen Brewer and Dr. Joanna Kempner shine a huge spotlight on this terribly common and often debilitating disease.

In this episode, The Two Jess(es) talk with these two incredibly resilient women who have dedicated their lives, work and research to advocate on behalf of themselves and the millions that suffer along with them. The ramifications of living with chronic illness are indeed serious, the frustrations that come with not being taken seriously, and the often debated topic of addiction to drugs as opposed to dependence to find some relief. Also, a lot of talk about psychedelics in this one!

If you, or someone you know and love is suffering from migraine, or any other chronic illness, this episode is packed full of useful information and a feast for your thoughts.

    Meet Eileen Brewer!

Eileen is an event coordinator and advocate for those living with headache diseases. She is the President of Clusterbusters, the Director of Special Events for the Coalition for Headache and Migraine Patients, a member of the National Headache Foundation’s Patient Leadership Council, and is a moderator for Move Against Migraine.

As a wife and mother of two, Mrs. Brewer balances her life in the headache community with various personal commitments, including sitting as the President of a preschool, leading a Girl Scout troop, and managing several real estate investment properties. Eileen has devoted herself over the years to many volunteer opportunities including local and national political initiatives, and event planning and advocacy for local charities.

    Meet Dr. Joanna Kempner!

I am an Associate Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University where I research, teach, and speak about the relationship between science, medicine, and justice, and the political suppression of science and resistance movements that fight politically motivated ignorance.

In 2014, I wrote the award-winning book Not Tonight: Migraine and the Politics of Gender and Health (Chicago). My work strives to give voice to those who are too often silenced, which means that much of my research focuses on questions that most people rarely think about: Whose pain matters? Why are there so few effective treatments for pain? What are the challenges of living a life in pain?

Over the years, I’ve found that ignorance drives too many  decisions about science and health. So I’ve also worked at understanding how and why some topics are never studied, and how certain “forbidden” subjects can reemerge as viable scientific investigations. To this end, I am currently writing a book about the underground research networks responsible for bringing psychedelics back to medicine. You can read more about my work here.

  • We Should Talk About Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week with Creator of Urban Sanctuary and 'Relatively Nobody' Podcast host, Gia Hasan

Send me a Text Message about the show!

    ***Tough Topic Alert***

February 1-7, 2021 is Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week. Child Protective Services substantiates a case of childhood sexual abuse Every NINE MINUTES (9)- and those are just the cases that are reported. We don't talk about it often, loudly, or nearly enough.

To raise awareness on this critical issue, The Two Jess(es) sit down with Gia Hasan, creator of Urban Sanctuary Wellness  https://urbansanctuarywellness.com/ a community space set up to help support corporations, schools and individuals in trauma and disease recovery, to talk about this important topic that affects more people than we know.

In this episode, Gia shares her story of childhood sexual abuse and trauma, and demonstrates the healing and beauty that come with using your voice. This is not an easy conversation for anyone to have, but restoration cannot come if we continue to avoid talking about it. Stigma builds strength when we refuse to practice saying the words: "I was abused, I am a survivor. I am not broken."

Gia brings a survivor's wisdom to this conversation with Jess and Jess-and while the topic is dark, there is so much light that comes with embodying who we are inside our pain, and there is hope to get to the other side of it. Gia shows us what it means to practice resilience and how to model vulnerability in a gentle and refreshing way.

If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual abuse or violence, contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673) or visit https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotline. For more information on Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, visit: https://sexualabuseandsexualviolenceawarenessweek.org

    Meet Gia:
Gia (she/they) is an integrative mind-body wellness coach and mindfulness meditation teacher, working with corporations, schools, and individuals and groups in trauma and disease recovery.

Gia’s meditation practice began in childhood with their ancestral influences of yoga, Ayurveda, and Sufism. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, meditation has been one of the greatest healing tools throughout their life. She has worked with non-profit organizations and corporations in stress management, building resilience, and cultivating empathy. Gia believes in the innate wisdom we have within us to heal and thrive, and utilizes their skills in nutrition, complementary and alternative medicine, and trauma-informed mindfulness to coach and educate.

Born and raised in the UK, she currently lives in the DC suburbs running a business and raising two children. As an activist, she works for justice in the community and holds workshops in unconscious bias, diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. Before covid, she was working with other survivors and at-risk communities. Gia is an avid lover of the arts, and writes poetry and short stories. She co-hosts a podcast, Relatively Nobody,  which creates space for BIPOC and marginalized voices to foster community and healing.

Send me a Text Message about the show!

At the age of 41, Rachel Lankester decided to take menopause by the ovaries and do it HER way.  When trying for another child, Rachel found out she was actually mid-menopause and after spending time in deep soul searching, decided she was going to turn mid-life on its head and make it cool again!

In this episode, TTJ(es) have so much fun talking with Rachel about what menopause CAN look like: it doesn't have to signal the end, but can be a kick-ass start to a whole new you! Rachel shares her own experience and excitement about the possibilities that come with moving away from nurturing everyone else when your estrogen nosedives, and the creativity that is possible when we allow ourselves to take on the role of a Leader instead of a Breeder.

Helpful advice about lubricant, vibrators and self-pleasuring are just some of the recommendations Rachel brings with her wealth of knowledge on this episode of We Should Talk About That!
