  • EP 119 - Weight Management for Busy Moms
Daily schedules can be so intimidating that moms don't have any idea where to start when it comes to taking care of themselves.Busy moms often don't put themselves first. When there's so much to do -- and so many people to take care of -- little time remains for self-care.

Schedules can even be so intimidating, moms don't have any idea where to start when it comes to taking care of themselves, including weight loss or weight management.

Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CDN, knows how the demands of motherhood can be especially challenging, as a mother of twins under one year old. She has learned personally, as well as via her practice New York Nutrition Group, some simple tips to keep moms on track:

    • Meal planning and prepping is key.
    • Track what you're eating in a smartphone app.
    • Get in exercise wherever and whenever you can.
    • Make rules that you can only eat when you're sitting down at the table.
    • Eat every 3-4 hours throughout the day.
    • Search for easy meal ideas and snacks.
    • Listen as Lisa joins Dr. Taz to share more about how moms can approach weight management in a simple, healthy way.

    • EP 118 - Nutrition and Your Gut: What You Need to Know
Stress, a lack of sleep and poor food choices can seriously affect your gut health and digestion. Registered Dietitian Isabel Smith explains how your body breaks down food. Many Americans have adopted a behavior of stress, forcing their bodies to constantly function in fight-or-flight mode. This stress cause immune system issues, period disruptions, sleep issues and keeps them from being able to properly digest  food.

Food is metabolized differently when you’re stressed than when you’re relaxed. Quickly scarfing down a meal without looking at your food can cause a variety of digestion and gut issues.

Isabel Smith, a Registered Dietitian, offers advice on how to become more aware of your stress levels and develop self-care practices like journaling or exercising to improve your gut health. She also shares the top foods that keep your gut functioning as it should.

Listen as Smith joins Dr. Taz to discuss how stress affects your gut and digestion.

    • EP 117 - Is Algae the New Superfood?
Catharine Arnston, founder ENERGYbits, details the health benefits of including algae in your diet and its role in fighting illness.A staple in Asian diets, algae is a relatively underused food group in America. However, it is the most nutrient-dense food in the world, with three times the amount of protein as steak, 25 times more calcium than milk and thousands more antioxidants than blueberries.

Algae is also the most studied food in the world, with more than 100,000 studies on the food group.

Catharine Arnston, Shark Tank contestant and founder and CEO of ENERGYbits, discusses how she discovered algae while her sister was battling cancer and how it altered the course of her life. Leaving a 30-year career in the business world, Arnston became dedicated to finding ways for more Americans to enhance their diets by adding in algae.

The result was ENERGYbits, algae tablets that build your immune system, helping you to heal better and faster.

    • EP 115 - The Missing Link in Chronic Illness: Your Heart
True health comes from tapping into the body's innate ability to heal instead of frantically looking for outside solutions.Whether you are dealing with cancer, autoimmune disease, or a slew of mysterious symptoms, chronic illness can cut to the core of a woman’s being.

This is something that Brenda Walding, DPT, FDN-P, knows all too well.

Due to the intense stress she experienced--starting with graduating from physical therapy school, a move, new job, getting engaged then married--she began to suffer from chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and severe rashes that covered her body. Her immune system collapsed and she developed a stomach infection. Brenda was bed bound for several months.

On top of all of that, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Through this horrific journey, she learned to change her health scope and turned to essential oils, dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments and being more mindful.

Brenda believes that health must encompass physical, emotional and spiritual aspects. True health comes from tapping into the body's innate ability to heal instead of frantically looking for outside solutions. In short, it's time to heal by leading from your heart.

Listen as Brenda joins Dr. Taz to share her story and discuss points from her book, Sick of Being Sick: The Woman's Holistic Guide to Conquering Chronic Illness.

    • EP 114 - Resetting Your Metabolism After the Holidays
Getting back on track after the holidays can be a struggle. Amy Shapiro MS, RD, CDN, offers simple tips for realizing your health and weight loss goals this year. Many people overindulge during the holiday season but recognize it and are motivated to get back on track on January 1.

However, it can be difficult to get started and maintain desired healthy habits. Amy Shapiro MS, RD, CDN, advises focusing on a few things you know you can succeed at so you realize changes quickly and then build upon them.

Three achievable goals she suggests are:

      1. Make sure you're meeting your water goals. This decreases bloating and increases energy, as well as helps reset your metabolism.
      2. Fill half your plate with vegetables at every meal.
      3. Cut out "white" foods, such as breads, crackers, French fries, etc.
      4. In terms of doing a detox, Amy believes the body knows how to detox itself but that water consumption is a key part of allowing it to do it's job. Intermittent fasting (IF) is also an effective option, but it's important to ensure you're getting all your nutrients in during your eating window.

Listen as Amy joins Dr. Taz to discuss additional ways to reset your metabolism and help you achieve all your health and weight loss goals in 2019.

      7. EP 111 - Managing Anxiety: Why Your SSRI Won't Cut It
Chronic stress and anxiety present more than mental and emotional symptoms--they can also prompt physiological responses.Stress and anxiety have become a regular occurrence in everyday life. From financial woes to relationship angst, there are no shortage of stress triggers.

Unfortunately, chronic stress and anxiety becomes more than just a mental or emotional condition. It can have a number of physiological results, such as leaky gut, food sensitivities, bloating, and an upset microbiome. Your body is constantly in reactive mode, which disrupts multiple systemic functions.

Rather than turn to prescription remedies, Ali Miller, RD, LD, CDE, prefers to take a more holistic approach. She utilizes a six-step approach in order to restore balance:

        1. Remove inflammation
        2. Reset the microbiome
        3. Repair the gut lining
        4. Restore micronutrients
        5. Rebound the adrenals
        6. Rebalance neurotransmitters
        7. Miller also uses a ketogenic strategy for managing chronic stress and anxiety, which helps balance blood sugar levels and grounds mood and mindset.

Listen as Miller joins Dr. Taz to discuss her expertise in this area, as well as share highlights from her newest book, The Anti-Anxiety Diet: A Whole Body Program to Stop Racing Thoughts, Banish Worry and Live Panic-Free.
