  • EP 111 - Managing Anxiety: Why Your SSRI Won't Cut It
Chronic stress and anxiety present more than mental and emotional symptoms--they can also prompt physiological responses.Stress and anxiety have become a regular occurrence in everyday life. From financial woes to relationship angst, there are no shortage of stress triggers.

Unfortunately, chronic stress and anxiety becomes more than just a mental or emotional condition. It can have a number of physiological results, such as leaky gut, food sensitivities, bloating, and an upset microbiome. Your body is constantly in reactive mode, which disrupts multiple systemic functions.

Rather than turn to prescription remedies, Ali Miller, RD, LD, CDE, prefers to take a more holistic approach. She utilizes a six-step approach in order to restore balance:

    1. Remove inflammation
    2. Reset the microbiome
    3. Repair the gut lining
    4. Restore micronutrients
    5. Rebound the adrenals
    6. Rebalance neurotransmitters
    7. Miller also uses a ketogenic strategy for managing chronic stress and anxiety, which helps balance blood sugar levels and grounds mood and mindset.

Listen as Miller joins Dr. Taz to discuss her expertise in this area, as well as share highlights from her newest book, The Anti-Anxiety Diet: A Whole Body Program to Stop Racing Thoughts, Banish Worry and Live Panic-Free.

    10. EP 108 - The Toxin that Came to Dinner: Saving Our Planet & Our Generations with Dave Sandoval
Many scientists and respected researchers believe the proliferation of glyphosate may be disrupting our ability to thrive and even to survive as a species. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that an agricultural chemical called glyphosate is a human health hazard. And, as of July 2017, against the chemical's creator Monsanto’s unsuccessful challenge in court, the state of California EPA has declared that glyphosate is a carcinogen and causes cancer. Many scientists and respected researchers believe the proliferation of glyphosate may be disrupting our ability to thrive and even to survive as a species. The complications caused by widespread glyphosate toxicity could be in part responsible for a massive increase of physical, mental and immune challenges that are now pervasive among the general population. The common thread? The food we eat and the environment in which we live. Both of these are now sources of potentially lethal glyphosate contamination. David Sandoval, author of The Toxin that Came to Dinner, joins Dr. Taz to explore solutions to this dangerous chemical.

    14. EP 104 - Live to 103! The Power of Medicinal Breathwork
Concentrated breathwork -- such as that practiced with Qigong Meditation -- has incredible benefits for overall health and improved longevity. The term "Blue Zones" encompasses those areas around the globe where people live the longest. Some of this longevity is nutrition-based, but as certified Qigong Meditation expert Simon Cheng believes, concentrated breathwork -- such as that practiced with Qigong -- also has incredible benefits.  This type of breathing teaches your body to turn on the parasympathetic nervous system--the "rest and digest" system (opposite of fight or flight). After years of being caught up in the "rat race," suffering multiple health issues, and undergoing a traumatic surgery which didn't resolve any of his medical problems, Simon went back to his roots: Eastern Medicine. Simon joins Dr. Taz to explain the benefits of breathwork, a few simple tips for getting yourself to that parasympathetic state, and additional lifestyle factors that contribute to health, well-being and longevity. 15. EP 103 - Bye Bye Mammograms? Rethinking Breast Cancer Screening
Women who have been told repeatedly to "get your mammogram" may have been misled. For decades, women have been advised to "get your mammogram" as an early detection approach. According to Dr. Nyjon Eccles, women have been misled.  Based on research, Dr. Eccles states that mammography screening doesn't lead to survival advantage. He cites research results that show for every 2,000 women who are screened over 10 years, one life will be saved, 10 women will receive unnecessary treatment, and 200 women will receive false positive results. A health gut (flora) makes life a lot easier. The good news is: there is something you can do about that! Try Kaya Biotics – as a treat for your gut. Click on this link to save 25% off your first order, use code "wholehealth" at checkout. - sponsor A better alternative, says Dr. Eccles, is the use of thermography, which uses infrared cameras to detect heat radiating from breast tissue. Cancers generate heat because they are highly metabolic and cause increased blood circulation. The screening tool does not involve compression of the breasts, nor does it use radiation. It is able to pick up on potential cancer before it can be seen, structurally, by a mammogram.  Another benefit is that thermography screening isn't impeded by dense breast tissue, and therefore can be used in younger women who may have a family history or genetic risk.  While mammography may produce false positives, Dr. Eccles has seen thermography result in 90-95% accuracy.  He does caution, however, that thermography shouldn't be used as a diagnostic tool; rather, its focus should be screening and early detection. Just because heat is detected, doesn't mean it's cancer -- it could be an inflammatory response. That said, any chronic or persistent inflammatory issues should also be followed up with additional diagnostic investigation. Listen as Dr. Eccles joins Dr. Taz to discuss more about why thermography is a better option to mammography, as well as his development of  ThermoCheck®, a computer-assisted Breast Thermography system. 16. Encore Episode - Food Sanity: How to Eat in a World of Fads & Fiction
Dr. David Friedman explains how to navigate food in a world of eating fads.Dr. David Friedman noticed the food rules were always changing. Something that was bad for you one day was proclaimed as having great health benefit the next. To cut through the noise, Dr. Friedman advises combining these three things: Common science: Find out what the studies show. Common sense: Trust your gut instead of what you see in the media. Biology: The body should be designed to utilize the food you eat. Consider eliminating animal milk, eating more fish, and reducing your red meat consumption. Eat like your grandparents, consuming things that were available decades ago. A health gut (flora) makes life a lot easier. The good news is: there is something you can do about that! The problem is that there are hormone disruptors that prevent weight loss. Plastics labeled with the numbers 5 or 7 have higher BPAs and interfere with hormones. If the PLU code on your produce has an 8, it contains GMOs. Stick to produce with stickers that begin with 9. Listen as Dr. Friedman joins Dr. Taz to help address the culinary conundrum.
