On this episode of the pod wanted to revisit absolute shero to the sober community, Laura Willoughby MBE co-founder of Club Soda, the mindful drinking movement.
We want to promote the Club Soda Mindful Drinking Festival this autumn. https://joinclubsoda.com/event/global-mindful-drinking-festival-2021/ and to highlight the brilliant work of changing the landscape of alcohol-free drinks in the UK and what a brilliant shero she is. The Festival is coming up soon- it will be fully online and we will be involved at some point 😊
Club Soda has 30,000 active members, 5,000 pubs and 200 drinks brands registered. It has made fundamental changes to way sobriety is being viewed in British society, campaigning for real tasty alternatives to be provided for people that do not drink and to make pubs inclusive spaces for all people. Club Soda also works to provide a space for people to think about their drinking, and how they drink around others to be mindful. They have groups on facebook for those who want to go alcohol free or drink less, and hold regular meetups around the UK. The Mindful drinking festival attracted 10,000 visitors this year, the tide is changing, and Laura and her team have been instrumental in bringing alcohol free living into the mainstream. We'd like to thank Laura for taking the time to speak so honestly and openly with us about her story. It truely was inspirational. So grab a cuppa and listen to our chat. x www.joinclubsoda.co.uk @joinclubsoda INSTA joinclubsoda TWITTER joinclubsoda FACEBOOK

In this episode, Kate talks to the the mum and daughter movers & shakers team, Naetha Uren and Calliese Alexandra, who founded Recovery Coach Academy.
Naetha & Calliese are a mother and daughter with credible lived experience and professional experience from the USA and UK. They are part of a chaotic but full of love intergenerational home (4 generations, age 8-80 under one roof!)
When Naetha brought her daughter to the UK nearly 4 years ago, they were looking for the resources and community to support their family in Recovery, but they could not find it, so they decided to build it.
Trigger warnings * In this episode we mention domestic violence and death by suicide. Please take care of yourselves.
Recovery Coach Academy was created to bring Recovery Coaching to the UK: training, coaching, implementing and supporting implementation.
Naetha and Calliese are the FIRST and ONLY CCAR Authorised Facilitators/Trainers and the first Certified Professional Recovery Coach Designates in the UK. They have partnered with CCAR (Connecticut Community for Addiction and Recovery) to deliver the CCAR Recovery Coach Curriculum including the flagship CCAR Recovery Coach Academy© 5-day training course, that is now CPD Accredited to bring recovery coaching to life in the UK.
They are also working on Recovery Coaching Communities, a CIC to create a community to collaborate and share all resources and services that support Many Pathways to Recovery.

In this episode, Kate talks with sober legend Sober Dave. In this episode we cover Dave's story, how encouraging men to talk is so very important and how the online sober sphere is still underpopulated by the male of the species. We also talk about the art of jumping into your own pants and Dave's tip's for sober living and keeping it real.
Dave is a 57 year old man who after 40 years of drinking decided to kick the booze back in January 2019.
In this episode, Kate speaks with author Penny Wincer a bout her book 'Tender - The Imperfect Art of Caring.' Penny's story of being a young carer for her mother which comes full circle to finding herself as carer for her son, who has Autism is moving and stirring and throws a light on othering in an ableist society, articulates the struggle of finding help as a carer and raises important questions about how we can support carers.
As carers we have extra weight on our shoulders and that can accelerate a problematic relationship with alcohol, as we try to cope with overwhelm, lack of support and isolation. Here we chat about the gifts and challenges of caring and how to build support and find support and why it takes a village.
Trigger warning: In this episode we discuss death by suicide. Please take care of yourself if you listen to media by respecting your boundaries around subjects you may find upsetting or triggering.

Chris started working as Substance Use counselor at Integral Care in 2009 and witnessed his clients struggle to remain abstinent from alcohol after they exited treatment. Chris identifies as a person who is thriving despite a mental health diagnosis, and is an advocate for mental health across North America. This is a brilliant uplifting chat about thriving despite adversity, looking for the fun and sparkle in life and working from your authentic self. It's a great chat. So grab a cuppa and let's chat. Kate and Mandy get in the same room! Recording together in London, and at the request of one of our US listeners, we reflect back on our one year milestones, why we went back to drinking and discuss tips for people approaching their soberversaries, and how to stay the course and push through that year mark.
This one year soberversary time is so often laden with expectation and anxiety as well as feelings of pride and achievement. How do we navigate the transition from the first year to year two? What should we expect of ourselves? Why is it a thing? Surely we should be bossing it by now? What was missing? Our expectations and minds can hinder more than help at this delicate time for sure.
So in this episode, we talk about things that tripped us us and what we have learned along the way in terms of stress management, support, boundaries and our on ongoing journeys in the hopes that it resonates with anyone out there feeling the wobbles.
