When you get a complaint or negative feedback what do you do?

Do you just delete the message and move on? Maybe you block the person if it's online?

I take a totally different approach to complaints.

Back in 2009, I had a complaint made about me online.

The person who made that complaint is now a great friend of mine and I'm grateful to him for making that complaint years ago in a way that was clear enough that I saw it and could make sure I could rectify the issue.

I reached out and built a long-standing relationship from that complaint.

When you see a client complaint, don't get upset, get excited. Every complaint is an opportunity to turn things around and build a relationship. Every complaint is an opportunity for you to improve your business.

Every complaint removes constraint.

I want to give you permission to stop "doing coffee"

As you start creating success and gaining attention, you're met with an endless stream of requests to meet for casual interactions like coffee dates. Possibly it could be an opportunity to collaborate but, most likely, it's going to be an unnecessary distraction for you.

It's okay to say no, or, to ask for the details of what you're actually going to be meeting about so you can prioritize if this meeting is actually going to be beneficial to you.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't spend time with other people. I spend a ton of time with other people, but, it's strategic, pre-planned, intentional time that going to achieve an outcome.

You don't want to get caught up in fake momentum. Your time is your most valuable asset, don't waste it.

I think it's natural to be resistant to process but you also need to understand and recognize that it's near impossible to scale a business effectively, long term, without actually creating process documentation.

Everywhere area you're investing time, effort, energy and money should have processes built around them.

You may feel that implementing processes can be an imposition but for your team, they crave it! It gives them predictability and makes them feel safe and confident that they can complete their job.

If you don't have processes in place you will always be exposed. The same mistakes will continue to happen and you will continue to miss the same things every time.

Stop fighting process, you don't need to. Process is going to liberate you. The earlier you put processes in place the better. Process in business will help you scale far faster and with less pain and anxiety.

Gossip is one of the most destructive forces in any organization.

Gossip slows everything down.

I suggest that everyone has a no-gossip policy in their business, but you have to understand that adhering to this policy has to come from the top.

In the business, I ran when I was younger, I was one of the biggest sources of gossip there was. When I look back with perspective, I can see why the people I worked with didn't feel safe and why I didn't feel safe.

You have to be the best example of the no-gossip policy in your business.

A company where gossip is part of the culture is damaging for leadership and for team members. A company where gossip is part of the culture will have a hard time growing.

In my career, I've been fortunate enough to have hired a lot of true believers. But you have to maintain and improve the true believer status or they may turn against you.
