When we go to sleep, our brain downloads everything it took in. Think of it as closing tabs on a computer... I have wayyyy too many tabs open in my brain. This process is essentially "creating room" for us to rest. But in our dreams, our mind can expand over many planes of consciousness, allowing us to view things from a different perspective.
