  • Daily Inventory - Recovered 698

The purpose of this daily inventory is to keep track of who we

are and what we are doing today.
    I try to remember that a daily inventory is not a test;
I try to remember that there are no right or wrong answers.
I try not to get upset when I know I could have done better.
During my daily inventory if I discover that I have failed to live
up to my expectations, I try to remember that this is a program of
growth and recovery, progress not perfection.
I know that if I stayed clean today, I did something right.

We asked our listeners a question and they responded.

We asked “When you do a daily inventory, do you reflect on the good
    things you do?”
What percentage of our listeners do you think said yes, I think
about the good stuff I do?
    https://www.surveymonkey.com/analyze/e2t2JO8kZ3zEAQXgGRxFlPEVTSWOIStpZuZqMdd1b44_3D

Do you reflect on the good stuff?

Why is a daily Inventory important?

How is this different/same as Step 10?
How is this different/same as Step 11?

One thing we should consider during a daily inventory are the

major events of the day. Why?

Feelings (good and bad) that come up during the course of the

day and how i dealt with them are important and worthy of review.
    Why?

Minding my own business is important in my recovery and should

be part of my reflection. Why?

I make mistakes during the day and acceptance is part of this.

    Why?

Talk about fear and faith in daily inventories.

Talk about the relationship between wrongs done, pride and

    fear.

Why is avoiding conflict bad? How can that upset recovery?

Talk about when to make amends and when not to?

have i done something difficult or particularly well today? how

can i appreciate myself for it?

  • Problems Other Than Alcohol - Recovered 696

In one way or another, drug addiction affects most us in AA. For

me and my experience with my son’s drug addiction, it stirs my
deepest interest and sympathy. In the world around us, we see
legions of men and women who become addicted to heroin who started
with a legitimate prescription to an opiate such as vicodin. Then
they find they are trying to cure or escape their problems by using
that prescription until it becomes so expensive. The, heroin is the
logical alternative because it is relatively cheap. Many A.A.’s,
especially those who have suffered these particular addictions, are
now asking, “What can we do to help?”

So, this is our topic, Problems other than alcohol.

Let’s go to you first Zach,

Are you in recovery because of polysubstance abuse?
Tell us about some of your using patterns.
How are they similar or different from your alcohol use?

I’m pretty sure I’m a heroin addict, I’m not positive because

I’ve never tried it. I’m sure if I did, I would love it.

What about the ritual of use, does drug ritual mean anything to

    you?

How does your fellowship help you navigate recovery with

    problems other than alcohol?
What are some of the challenges?
How do you share at meetings regarding your drug use and
    triggers?

Have you sponsored someone whose primary problem was not

    alcohol?
How do you sponsor this type? What are some of the challenges?

Can a non alcoholic drug addict become an A.A. member?

Desire to stop using alcohol? If no, then no
Interesting question, do you have to be an alcoholic to be in
    AA?

Can someone with a drug addiction, who also has a genuine

alcoholic history, become a member of A.A.?

What do you think about special-purpose groups for say people

    who have polysubstance problems?
What do you think about A.A.’s who have suffered both alcoholism
and addiction. What do you think about special-purpose groups
forming to help other A.A.’s who are having drug trouble? Do you
think this helpful? What could be some problems that could arise
    from such a formation?

Could such a special purpose group call itself an A.A.

    group?

Could such a group also include nonalcoholic drug users?

Is there any objection if A.A.’s who have had the dual problem

join outside groups, such as Narcotics Anonymous?

Melissa is currently an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan

Melissa's expertise is primarily in criminal defense, municipal prosecution, and family law with a focus on divorce, child custody, adoption, and child support. Her skills in the courtroom have earned her the recognition as a Super Lawyer Rising Star for the past 5 consecutive years.. Melissa has fought for her clients across southeast Michigan in Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Macomb, and Monroe counties, as well as various district courts.

Again, Melissa, welcome to the Recovered Podcast

In the spirit of full disclosure, Melissa’s family means a great deal to Anna and me. Our son Andrew and Melissa’s brother knew each other quite well and that is how we got to know Melissa’s mother and father. When Andrew passed away in 2012, it was your mother who accompanied us to Florida to settle Andrew’s affairs there. I don’t know what we would have done without her. It was your father who transported us to and from the airport. It was your grandmother who provided our lodging while in Florida. It was your brother who also supported us when we were in florida and gave Steven, our son, Andrew’s fishing pole he used in Florida. And you gave us council when the Police detective was giving us the run around when we were down there. For all of this, we owe a great deal to you and your family.

But, Melissa you have decided to try something different and that is the topic for today’s show.

Melissa is running for Wayne County circuit court judge in the great state of Michigan. This is the subject of our get together, Melissa’s run to be judge and why she wants to be judge.

So, Melissa, tell us a little about yourself.

What is the difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer?
What is the difference between a good judge and a great judge?

Why did you want to be a lawyer?
Where did you go to school?
    Where do you practice?
    What do you do?

Why do you want to be a judge?
You use the tagline, firm but fair, what does this mean to you?
Where are you in the process of getting elected?
You have great endorsements, who has endorsed you?
    Any surprises?
    When is the election?

  • 5 Reasons to Hate AA - Recovered 692

Personally, I really didn’t know anything about AA before I came in, and so I did not have many prejudices against joining. As a matter of fact, I did see that AA was helping my son Andrew before I came to my first meeting. So I was grateful that AA was there for Andrew.

The problem is that for many people looking for help have turned to AA but have had experiences that can only be described as bad AA. Also, many have heard exaggerated stories about AA. Both these experiences have left people with no desire to associate with AA.

So today, I would like to discuss some of the most popular misconceptions about AA and what our understanding is. We will look at 5 popular reasons why people say they hate AA and we will try and see if we have reasonable responses.

AA is a cult - why do you think AA is not a cult?

Cult - a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.

Preamble - Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
AA has a hidden agenda - do you think AA has a hidden agenda? Do you think certain members of A have a hidden agenda? What are they? What can we do about it?

Hidden Agenda - a secret or ulterior motive for something.
Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

“No one should be told they’re ‘powerless'”. Are you powerless? What does this mean?

Powerless - unable to do something or to stop something
Powerless over alcohol, but responsible for your recovery
“You’re just replacing one crutch with another”
    Yep

“It doesn’t work. Only a 3% success rate.

  • Step 12 - Recovered 690

The Twelfth Step sums up our Twelve Step recovery program as a lifetime undertaking based on the practice of spiritual principles and service to others with the same addiction or compulsion. Bill Wilson writes, “The joy of living is the theme of AA’s Twelfth Step, and action is its key word...Here we begin to practice all Twelve Steps of the program in our daily lives so that we and those about us may find emotional sobriety.” The transforming power of the Twelve Steps is now focused on the whole of life, and the recovering alcoholic moves to a larger, more encompassing dimension: the world of the spirit.

  • Step 11 - Recovered 688

Our sobriety depends on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. The powerlessness over our addictions that nearly destroyed us will return if we do not work on maintaining our contact with a Higher Power. In Step 11, we carry that goal further: we seek to improve the conscious contact with God that we have established in the previous Steps.

Prayer and meditation are our principal means of conscious contact with God. There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation, and prayer. We have found that a life of self reflection, that is Step 10, along with prayer and meditation, Step 11, can give us peace of mind which can stand firm in the face of difficult circumstances. We find that Alcohol is no longer necessary, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

With Step 10, the Big Book tells us sanity has returned. “We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically.”

The process of looking at our character defects and our wrongs that we began in the Fourth Step continues with this Step. “We have entered the world of the Spirit. Our next Function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness.”

Now that we have cleaned up the mistakes of the past and made reparations for them, this Step tells us how to maintain the new state of serenity and freedom we have achieved. With Step 10, we monitor our character defects and their consequences through a daily inventory, taking prompt corrective action as needed to keep our slate clean and our character defects in check.

Bill Wilson writes, “Good judgement, a careful sense of timing, courage and prudence - these are qualities needed when we take Step 9.” It is a painful, humbling step. But it is also rewarding. AA’s Twelve Promises are said to come true with the Ninth Step.

This is an action step. We determine, after prayer and consultation with our sponsor, the specific amends we need to make to each person we have harmed. And, of course, we make the actual amends to each person on our Eighth Step list.
