  • Hannah McQueen: 'For Richer, For Poorer'
Most people start married life by making vows, which traditionally include the line ‘for richer, for poorer’.
Usually, that’s not something you think too much more about, because you’re young, unencumbered and the going is good.  You are both in good jobs, with good prospects. You work hard, progress quickly and enjoy the perks of earning more than ever before, by spending more than ever have before.
That is until the good job is lost, or one of you hits a wall. He (let’s say) is burnt out, or at a career crossroads, so you both agree he needs some time out - just for a month or so.  But that time passes and he’s taken to unemployment like a duck to water. He has ideas of developing a business, but for now, they’re just that – ideas.  You want to be supportive but it’s scaring you, and his general lack of regard for the family finances is unsettling. You want to believe in him, but someone has to think about the practicalities. For the first time, you’re forced to confront the reality of those long-ago vows. So what do you do?
This is a scenario I’ve seen play out over and over again with my clients. The face of the workplace has changed dramatically, and the only certainty is more change is coming. More people are also quitting - not because they’ve found something better, but because they want a break, or to start their own business. That sounds great, but the implications can be drastic and demand proper consideration.
As the spouse of someone who is fundamentally unhappy in their job, you bear the brunt of it, so when your partner comes to you (hopefully before they quit) it can be a relief knowing there’s an end in sight! But that relief can quickly be replaced by anxiety unless there are parameters around what comes next. Here are some of the things I advise my clients who are going through this transition.
Agree on a time-frame, and what progress needs to be made – be it business milestones or financial ones. Often this is a natural deadline, driven by my next recommendation – determine when your savings are going to run out.
Agree how much money you’re prepared to spend. Any business requires investment, of cash and time, so you need to be on the same page about what’s at stake.
Speak to a business advisor about the viability of your plan, because not all accountants know how to run businesses, and the advice or concerns of the “supporting” partner is often interpreted as a lack of faith – which is a breeding ground for resentment.
Measure your progress, and be accountable for the results. That means you also need to be prepared to pull the pin if it’s not working.
Changing careers or starting out on your own can be a good thing, but it can also be stressful, especially in a relationship – no matter how much you meant those vows.

  • Francesca Rudkin: A wrinkle in time, Sweet Country and Faces Places
A Wrinkle in Time starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling
From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light.
Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg's classmate Calvin O'Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.
Sweet Country starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, and Hamilton Morris
Warwick Thornton's award-winning Australian western set in the outback of the Northern Territory, 1929. When Aboriginal stockman Sam (newcomer Hamilton Morris) kills a white station owner in self-defence, he goes on the run. Co-stars Bryan Brown and Sam Neill.
Sam and his wife are pursued across the outback. Sergeant Fletcher (Brown) leads the posse with the help of tracker Archie (Gibson John) and local landowners Fred Smith (Neill) and Mick Kennedy (Thomas M. Wright). Fletcher is desperate to capture Sam and put him on trial for murder, but Sam is an expert bushman and has little difficulty outlasting them. Eventually, for the health of his pregnant wife, Sam decides to give himself up and is put on trial in the courtroom of Judge Taylor (Matt Day)
    Faces Places
Agnès Varda and JR have things in common: a passion for and the exploration of images in general, and more precisely, for places and for ways of showing, sharing, and exhibiting them. Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create open air photography galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a film in France, far from cities, during a trip in JR's photographic (and magical) truck. Through chance encounters and prepared projects, they reached out to others, listening to them, photographing them, and sometimes putting them on posters. This film also tells the story of Agnès and JR's friendship, which grew stronger throughout the film shoot, between surprises and teasing, and while laughing about their differences.

Serves 4 as entrée or lunch
    3 tbsps olive oil
    1 medium onion, diced
4 parsnips – peeled and chopped
    1 medium potato, diced
    1 pear, diced
1 tbps curry powder (make sure it’s fresh)
    1 tsp turmeric
    ½ tsp ground cumin
    ½ tsp sea salt
    Decent grind black pepper
1 L water or vegetable stock
4 rashers middle bacon, cooked to crisp, to serve
    2-3 tbsps finely diced chives

In a large saucepan sauté onion’s in oil until soft. Add parsnips and potato and cook gently for 10 minutes until beginning to soften. Add pear, spices and seasoning and continue to sauté for 5-7 minutes stirring occasionally. Pour over water or stock and simmer until vegetables and pear are very soft.
Blend to smooth with a stick blender, or in batches in a food processor. Pour back into saucepan and add more water if it is too much like puree instead of a soupy consistency. Bring to rapid simmer until piping hot.
Serve topped with crispy bacon and a sprinkling of chives.
