WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THRIVING AND SURVIVING? WHAT MENTALITY WILL YOU CHOOSE?
    SURVIVING:

A relinquishment of control in life, an abandonment of active ownership to make a change in any capacity, a minimization of thoughts, feelings and emotional engagement in the world in order to simply do the bare minimum to “get by”, depletion of energy and dependence physiologically on adrenaline, caffeine and cortisol to take action, leaving body feeling de-energized and depressed.

    THRIVING:

Alive, energized and enthused for life, paired with an innate satisfaction in and with life for who we are and how we are contributing to the world, creativity and contribution as expressions of our deepest selves, knowing that we are aware and in control of our thoughts, feelings, emotions and decisions and that we have an ability to take ownership and take action instead of resigning to blame and resentment. Motivation and energy is boundless because we are living in our flow and feel like we are living a full life as we pursue goals and dreams and connect authentically with others.
THE DAILY DECISION WE ARE GIVEN:
The initial question as to why some people thrive and others merely survive leads me to start the show with a powerful answer: most people don’t know that thriving is a choice.

I believe in you. The very essence of all that I believe lies in the confidence I have that you were created for a purpose and that you have something unique to create and contribute to the world.  I understand that sometimes it's hard to remember this amazing truth about yourself in the midst of life - life is busy, messy, distracting, overwhelming, discouraging - but it can also be fulfilling, invigorating and amazing when you can remember that you are here for a reason.

We each have choice every day: to survive or to thrive.  What is it that you will decide? You have a big choice today to make - it's a choice to make today and every day, so make today the day you decide what it is that you will choose.

The truth is, both decisions take effort.  So decide based off what you really want in life and what legacy you want to leave to this world.  I know that as you read this, you assume that everyone's answer should be obvious: we should choose to "thrive,

MY STORY: THE DAY WHEN THE WORST FEAR OF MY LIFE HAPPENED.
I came to with a sharp stinging in my throat. Trying to open my eyes I blinked forcefully, trying to make sense of my disorientation and of the darkness around. The room was stuffy; a dim yellowish light lit the far back corner, giving the room an eerie, dirty feel. The air tasted stale and cold.

Screams had woken me up; they had actually been my own screams but it took me a prolonged breathed to know it. Drugged to unconsciousness the effects were wearing off and I reentered the world with a foggy brain. In my confusion I felt the pressure of a person on top of me. He had strong hands and they were wrapped around my throat, compressing it and causing internal lacerations. The stinging in my throat made sense now. I tried to move but felt paralyzed, my arms held down at the wrist and my body weighted by his. I had never felt so helpless or frozen – the immobility scared the hell out of me. From fear turned to shock and from shock to a fight for survival. Sobs punctuated my screams and I searched for safety. I had no idea where I was or how I got there and I had no idea who this man was who was hurting me. All I knew is I was powerless, voiceless and in pain. He was good-looking, fit and had a distinctive tattoo. That tattoo – those inked lines of barbed wire bled together in a blur branded into my memory.  The sharp stabbing in the lower half of my body got worse and more intense. Gasping for breath I saw tiny stars and wondered with intense clarity if I was living out my last hour. I was living a nightmare, feeling it in full and fearful I would never wake up.

Rage fired up in me. It overtook my fear and it numbed the pain and with superhuman force, I forced my body into convulsions. Matched with the highest shrieks for help I could muster with my lungs, I committed to creating as much of a scene and as much sound as possible, not knowing if it would help or if anyone would hear, but in desperation that there had to be someone somewhere close by.

It turns out I was right. My attacker had taken me to a seedy motel and the chaos I was creating was about to create a problem for him because though questionable in location, there were still enough witnesses around.

    WHAT IS COMPASSION FATIGUE:
Compassion Fatigue is a state experienced by those helping people or animals in distress; it is an extreme state of tension and preoccupation with the suffering of those being helped to the degree that it can create a secondary traumatic stress for the helper. –Dr. Charles Figley

    THREE WAYS TO PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE
    Cut back.

    Cut down.

    Cut it out.

Cut back - on overcommitting (reduce how often you say “yes”), on social media or news overload (slow down, disconnect from the buzz of the world), reduce your sugar and processed foods intake (all action things / decisions that require action)

Cut down –reduce your expectation of performance (get away from perfectionist mentality…learn to know when good enough is good enough), on idealized daily to-do list for your life, on mental laziness (negativity, etc.) (thoughts, decisions that take space in your mind)

Cut it out – stop thinking you are the only person who can help others, stop putting your sleep at the bottom of your priority list, stop putting yourself and your self-care last.

“You always need to take care of yourself, put the proverbial oxygen mask over yourself first before putting it on your children, and in the believer’s life, fill yourself with God’s love and identify and grace and then allow that to spill out over others. Self care and boundaries and truth based thinking are key to avoiding compassion fatigue. “ – Marie Anderson

    GO-TO SELF-CARE INSTANT REMEDIES
    >Get outside

    >Get around people you love and who’s energy lifts you up

    >Get in God’s presence

    >Get rid of the negative, self-critical thoughts about your performance

    >Get real with yourself – know how to say “no” when you have reached your limit.
