  • 430: Disney Leadership Lessons
In the past few episodes of The Savvy Dentist Podcast we have been taking you on a road trip across the U.S. Starting in Las Vegas where we visited famous shoe company Zappos, then over to Seattle where we visited the Pike Place Markets and stopped off at the world famous fish market.

In this episode we wrap our tour off in Anaheim at Disneyland, where we dissect the lessons of leadership that have created the world famous culture that is Disney.

If there was ever a chance to understand how to pragmatically utilise one of the most successful companies on the planet's rules for customer service, then jump on the ride and be sure to have a notepad handy.

    • [3:27] - There is always a market for someone who wants to upgrade. Disney call it ‘the fast lane’. There is always a premium opportunity in your practice as not everyone is cost sensitive, so be on the lookout for people that want to go to the front of the queue. What should we offer those clients and patients?
    • [4:36] - Many dentists and dental practices encounter friction in the sales process. The friction could be handover between the front desk, appointment availability, or how your team is asking for the sale. These friction points slow down the sales process. So how do you make that buying process for your patients as frictionless and as easy as possible?
    • [7:12] - Everything drives back to your organisations values, and vision. How to get these two critical points right in your practice.
    • [9:06] - The Culture Creation Telescope, what is it, and how to use it to develop a culture like the Disney Organisation.
    • [12:10] - Everyone needs a Roy. Roy was Walt Disney’s brother. He was the guy that made Disney fiscally achievable. He was the guy that brought structure to the creations. How to find a ‘Roy’ for your practice.
    • [15:41] - Be sure to be promoting people into leadership roles thoughtfully and based around their values alignment. Skills can be taught. We can't often shift someone's values, so be intentional when promoting your leaders
    • [19:38] - Disney have a beautiful way of letting team members go … they simply ‘upgrade them to guest’. How do you need to modify how you upgrade someone who is not fitting in, ‘to guest’?

    • 429: Lessons from our trip to the famous Pike Place Markets
The best ideas often come from outside the industry.

So at The Savvy Dentist Podcast, it's our aim to find things that are interesting in the business world, and look for their relevance to the dental world.

The Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, Washington, was founded in 1930 and is known for its tradition of fishmongers throwing the fish purchased by customers prior to wrapping it.

The fish market was near bankruptcy in 1986, but after the introduction of new practices such as the fish throwing, games, and customer performances, it received significant exposure in national media and on television shows.

Pike Place Fish Market is today a world-famous tourist destination, attracting up to 10,000 daily visitors.

      • [6:12] - The four tenets of the fish philosophy are to choose your attitude. The idea is you come to work and you get to choose, am I going to have a good day? Or, am I not going to have a good day? Am I going to have a good attitude or not a good attitude?
      • [13:06] - How telling stories can help connect you with your patients.
      • [16:12] - Personal emotional connection is the glue that holds your dental practice together. The personal emotional connection with your patients, knowing them, knowing their families, knowing their interests, knowing their hopes and their aspirations as well as their fears and frustrations and matching our care to suit.

      • 428: Zappos Insights - Lessons from our US field trip
The best ideas often come from outside the industry.

Now, I've been looking at other businesses for decades, having long held the view that what happens in other businesses is directly relevant to what we can do in our local dental practice.

The market has evolved, and the needs of today's practice owner are farmore sophisticated than traditional practice management paradigms.

The market has moved on. And so as business owners, we need to be constantly educating ourselves. We need to be constantly at the forefront.

Zappos is a company I've been fascinated with for over a decade, and in this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast I am going to share some of the insights that came about as a result of a recent field trip to Zappos in the United States.

        • [5:02] - The story of Zappos and Tony Hsieh.
        • [6:31] - Tony Hsieh wanted to create a work place that people were happy to go to work and they could do business on Zappo’s terms. Zappos became well known for their internal work culture.
        • [8:32] - The 10 core values of the Zappos organisaton.
        • [14:03] - How can you utilise the Zappos core values in your Dental Practice.
        • [17:46] - Hire and retain the best people using the Zappos core values.

          • 427: The Power of Purpose Driven Marketing
In this episode of The Savvy Dentist podcast, Dr. Jesse Green chats marketing with Chris Hogan, author of Building Brands on Purpose.

Typically when we talk about marketing, it's all about open rates, and click-through rates, and this social media platform, or that algorithm change.

However, today Jesse & Chris discuss strategic marketing. Getting right back to the foundations and the fundamentals that actually power your marketing.

They discuss the role of purpose, the role of values, not just in your marketing, but in your team structure and how they all interplay and create a powerful business culture, internally, and externally.

We're gonna encourage you to raise your gaze. So rather than looking for the silver bullet, the magic pill, the short term fix, this is about getting those foundations right. It'll cause you to approach your marketing from a different perspective.

            • [6:34] - Starting a Dental Practice, generally we are not trained in the art of strategic marketing. So what are the common things that small businesses misunderstand when it comes to strategic marketing?
            • [10:35] -  Jesse & Chris explore how Purpose & Values form a foundation of your business and a lever for your strategic marketing. So, what are your business Purpose and Values?
            • [19:06] - The Proactive Methodology explained. P for purpose. R for research. O for opportunity. A for audience. C. Content. Turn it on. I ignite, V for validate. E is evolve.
            • [24:43] - The common problem for business owners is being stuck in the trenches. When you're stuck in the trenches, you can't see the forest for the trees. Raise your gaze, Chris explains how to get out of the trenches.
            • [32:07] - How to work with the members in your team who realistically don't want to do this as a long-term career.
