Reporting live from the FIGS annual retreat, D and Jackie chat with Midwife Henna all about midwifery and Roe v. Wade. She shares how she got into midwifery, and the many misconceptions around the practice. She discusses how midwifery is the standard care in other countries until alternate intervention is required, while there is such a stigma surrounding it in America. She explains why she couldn’t see herself working in a birth center, and the high mortality rates in the United States for women giving birth, especially for women of color. Henna highlights the different benefits midwives bring to the birthing community, including shared decision making and autonomy, and the negative repercussions that the overturning of Roe v. Wade would have. Danielle speaks to the lack of education and contraception in this country, and lastly, Henna discusses her platform and offers advice for people considering a career in labor and delivery.

This episode is dedicated to Harry Styles. Harry, if you’re listening, we love you. Your hosts are joined this week by their friend Hamza DMD to talk all about toxic masculinity and gender neutralism. They discuss the patriarchy running deep in healthcare, and how inappropriate behaviors are still brushed off as “just how it is.” Hamza opens up about being an immigrant and person of color, which allowed him to empathize more with women who are faced with additional challenges at work and in life. He also opens up about his gender identity, and a bad breakup that forced him to connect with his true self. They talk about how Harry Styles is an inspiration for so many when it comes to gender fluidity, and embracing all that is both masculine and feminine. Hamza also asks D and Jackie how they think they changed the most after significant breakups, and he gives us some behind the scenes details on his incredible friendship, partnership, and recent photoshoot with Lynne and V Coterie.

This week we chat all about healthcare influencers; this episode is great for anyone thinking of starting that side hustle! Portia and Sarah from the Healthcare Influencer Network join your hosts to talk all about diversifying healthcare and using our education to relay public health information. They share how the network got started, their mission, and the type of brands they work with. They explain why they’re not just a typical influencer agency, and highlight the specific values the brands that they work with must align with. With the pandemic, more people have turned to social media and influencers for information, and Sarah and Portia want to ensure information is spread by people who look like all of us, and that those people are being compensated correctly.

Let’s talk about boards, baby! This week we are joined by Latrina Walden, MHA, MSN, FNP-C, FNP-BC and CEO & Owner of Latrina Walden Exam Solutions to talk all about medical board exams. She talks about what sparked her interest in the NP route, and specifically the FNP route. She discusses why she wanted to create Latrina Walden Exam Solutions for nurses, and she highlights the gap between our education and studying for the boards, as it’s completely different from how you’re tested in schools. She offers insight into when you should start studying, and differences between taking the boards and the NCLEX. She shares what people can expect from her course, and a few things people should consider before embarking on the journey of becoming an NP. This episode is a great reminder of why we do what we do, and of all the exciting paths you can take in this career.

Narcissistic Relationship Coach and Psychologist Dr. Jaime Zuckerman joins your hosts to talk all about navigating and exiting a relationship with a narcissist. Many healthcare workers identify as fixers and people pleasers, which can make them even more likely to fall victim to a narcissist. Dr. Z is here to teach us how to protect ourselves and spot abusive behavior. She talks about whether a narcissist can actually change, and if male and female narcissists present differently. Dr. Z explains what a narcissist is not, and how narcissism functions on a spectrum. She also highlights the need for a full-on exit strategy, and the post-breakup abuse that often occurs when someone leaves a narcissist. We hope that if anything from this conversation resonates with you, or you find yourself in a relationship with a narcissist, this offers that final push you need to ask for help.
