Before your hosts start today, they’d like to take the time to remind everyone that this podcast is, ultimately, a Chase Stokes fan account...Once that’s established, Jac and D welcome an incredible certified physician’s associate in primary care who specializes in LGBTQ+ and HIV care, Asia Sullivan. We promise this episode does get in to your standard medical chats, but first the three gush over Asia’s wedding that was featured in The Knot wedding magazine. Asia then discusses how she got into the field, coming from rural Alabama where there was not good access to care. She highlights where LGBTQ+ specific care falls in to the curriculum, which seems to largely depend on where you study, as there appears to be no real standardized practice for how to address the community's specific needs. Asia talks about her work with HIV care, and provides a status update on Monkeypox. (Shocker: the vaccine is working!! Who would have thought…) She also talks about what the vaccine was actually already approved for, but you may want to fact check that one. Asia then shares what she is most passionate about, which ultimately comes down to destigmatizing conversations around things that should be considered normal, but aren’t discussed for silly reasons. She also provides tips on how best to approach conversations about testing, and how she keeps it all very lighthearted. We are so thankful to Asia for taking the time to share with us all of the options and advancements in HIV testing and care.
You can get HIV tests over the counter at CVS, or go to takemehome.org to be mailed a confidential HIV kit to your house.
If you test negative, you can access free federal PrEP at readysetprep.hiv.gov.

Something D gets questions on constantly is her experience in the field of aesthetics; many people are looking to get out of the hospital and to learn about other options. So, this week, while Jac is roaming with the cows in no-wifi land, board certified FNP Vanna Padilla hops on the mic to talk all things dermatology and aesthetics. The two start by addressing the difference between derm and aesthetics, and Vanna then talks about what her patient population looks like, and how she found her way into derm after going to school to be an FNP. They also challenge the notion that this career is all “pretty and fun” as they discuss all the things that could go wrong in addition to the physical health benefits that can come from aesthetic procedures. They dive into the unique patient-provider relationship, and how it is important to them to speak up if something is not in a patient’s best interest. They also get into different curriculum requirements for different routes within the field, Vanna’s favorite thing to treat in office, and the importance of holistic approaches to patient care.
Be sure to follow Vanna on TikTok and Instagram @vannapadilla_np, check out yourskincareexpert.com and stay tuned for the launch of her courses.

TW: Suicide Prevention Awareness month
On this episode of where in the world is Jackie Camardo, Jac joins us from Scotland, with full on fall girl vibes to take us into pumpkin spice season. Today’s solo catch up episode is inspired by the change seen in Jac this summer that has been so inspiring to watch. She has seen a shift in herself and her perspective, and wanted to update everyone on where she’s at and how she got there. For Jackie, the key to her recovery was mindfulness. She encourages you to have awareness of where you’re at, and know that wherever that is, it’s okay. Danielle is also in a great place at the moment, and opens up about her one-year anniversary with therapy, and shares some tips on how she got to that point. Mental health is something your hosts strive to discuss frequently on the podcast, encouraging people to humanize healthcare workers and realize that they aren’t actually superhuman. Always, but especially considering September is Suicide Prevention Awareness month, we hope all healthcare workers know that they aren’t meant to carry this much alone, and that there are people there to help you shoulder the pain.

The fangirling is real on this week’s episode of The WoMed as your hosts welcome badass sports medicine physician Dr. Julia Bruene to the pod. Now working for some of the most elite teams in the country, Dr. Bruene shares how she got to where she is and goes into her love for the spectacle of sport. She speaks to imposter syndrome, burnout, and finding what she actually likes for her own creative outlet. This leads your hosts to discuss Julia's incredible podcast, Your Doctor Friends, that highlights the importance of building bridges between people (especially women) in medicine, and the value of providing information to the public that is normally behind barriers. She also discusses her role as a female in a male-dominated field, a day in the life in the sports medicine world, the unique reality of professional athletes’ medical information being public knowledge, and the world of college sports. This episode is as hilarious as it is informative, and we hope you enjoy!

Before welcoming this week’s incredible guest, we reminisce on WoMed x New Girl reels, and applaud Maren Morris and Cassadee Pope for standing up to Brittany Aldean. Your hosts are then joined by registered dietician Kara Wilson, who has chosen to work specifically with nurses! She shares why she chose to work with nurses in particular, what she would define as healthy or balanced eating, and offers advice to nurses on night shift. Her and Jackie bond over how common tackling a shift on nothing but a coffee is—and suggests little tricks and treats to have alongside that much needed caffeine. Kara and your hosts talk about social media pressure and diet trends that are harmful and not sustainable, as well as the responsibility that comes with being an influencer. While Kara makes a point to acknowledge how individual nutrition is, we hope this episode reminds you that you’re not alone in those shift-work struggles, or in combatting the diet culture that has been ingrained in us forever.

Financial wellness is a huge part of our overall well-being, and as healthcare workers, a six-figure debt is not uncommon. Today your hosts are joined by Student Loan Planner consultant Meagan Landress who reminds us that student loan debt is treatable with the correct plan of action. Meagan joined Student Loan Planner in 2019 and since has consulted on $160M+ of student loan debt for over 900 households. Meagan shares what the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program is, how to know if you’re eligible, and what comes next after you qualify. She then discusses the 4 things you have to continue to maintain in order to remain eligible, and how Biden’s recent news about loan forgiveness fits into this discussion. Meagan also talks about the PSLF waiver, which allows people to go back and get credits for months that were previously ineligible. However, this opportunity only lasts until October 31, 2022, so it’s crucial that every public servant with any kind of federal loan knows about this PSLF expansion. If you’re feeling haunted by your student loans, we hope this episode can provide some direction and support.
Meagan was the first person in Georgia to acquire her CSLP® designation, as a Certified Student Loan Professional®. If not with Student Loan Planner, Meagan and the WoMed team encourage you to seek out a certified student loan professional (CSLP).
Be sure to check out their blog and get support at studentloanplanner.com, and tune in to their podcast Student Loan Planner. You can find an employment certification form/PSLV help tool at studentaid.gov.

Thank God It’s WoMed Friday! TGIWF is our new motto around here as your hosts sit back, relax, and catch up. Danielle is getting back in the city and rediscovering why she fell in love with the place, and has been taking care of her brand-new puppy. She gives us an update on her career and the passion she has to perfect her craft. Jackie opens up about a potential career path that’s on her mind, which could not be more perfect. They also touch on a few of your questions, and talk about how to politely decline a date, and a nightshift. Your hosts then touch on red (and orange) flags on dating apps as Jackie explores the idea of dating again. This episode is all about “crossing I’s and dotting T’s” (or something like that...) P.S. if any nurses out there are successfully dating another nurse, please let us know.

If you’re looking for a source of inspiration, look no further than Dr. Ade Osinubi. She joins your hosts today to discuss her impressive career, despite only recently starting her residency in emergency medicine. She discusses the non-profit she started in high school to help women experiencing obstetric fistula and what it was like doing this work at such a young age. They then discuss her documentary, Black Motherhood Through the Lens, and how she balanced creating it while also being in med school. She talks about her recent publication in the American Academy of Pediatrics on precocious puberty, and how race being listed as a risk factor is problematic and perpetuates adultification bias. She also praises the mentors she had along the way that made this all possible. Lastly, she shares her hopes for her film and offers advices to anyone in a similar position—we hope you find this episode as inspiring as we do.

TW: suicidal ideation
Just the two of us! This week your hosts take the time to update the WoMed community on season 5 and their busy lives. Danielle opens up about her one-year anniversary of being in therapy, and how good of a place she is in. For Jackie, hearing D continue to process traumas that happened a decade ago offers her some perspective that while trauma may always sit with you, you find ways to cope. Jac opens up about her divorce and the things that have helped her though, including starting an SSRI, focusing on meeting her basic needs, and planning her trip to Italy. Your hosts express their gratitude for one another and this podcast, and Jac shares moments of love she has felt throughout her journey. We hope that, should you be going through something similar, you are also able to find moments of love and light through the darkness.
