Thanks to Nadia for stopping by TheBoldWay!

Nadia Hallgren is the director of Becoming, the Netflix documentary on Michelle Obama, one of the top five most-watched nonfiction films of all time.

Born in the Bronx to an on-and-off postman father and a domestic worker mother, without ever attending film school, she earned her stripes over 15 years behind the camera: production assistant on Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, then cinematographer at the post–civil war tribunals in Sierra Leone, inside the busiest maternity ward in the world in the Philippines, and alongside attorney Ben Crump in the homes of American families bereaved by police violence.

Today a Netflix-signed director on Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE and the Victoria Beckham series, she comes to tell us how she landed the role of a lifetime opposite Michelle Obama, what she learned with a front-row seat to the best and worst of humanity, and why, in her view, real success is only ever built on the long game.

    Timeline

04:00: From the Bronx to filmmaking | Modest childhood, library kid, photography as the first spark

12:00: 15 years as a cinematographer | Sierra Leone, the Philippines, North Korea — a front-row seat to humanity

19:00: The phone call that changed everything | Why her low-budget skill set, not film school, won her Michelle Obama

28:00: Meeting Michelle | "Be yourself," the hug, the conversation about their mothers

33:00: Building Becoming | The Chopped method — make the best meal with the basket you're given

45:00: The Netflix model | Flat fee, no back-end, but every door opens after

48:00: Directing as coaching | 35 people, no framework, never take the low-hanging fruit

53:00: Victoria Beckham | Refusing the Spice Girl angle to film a 50-year-old woman in full reinvention

1:08:00: Career as a long game | Real estate at 25, success at 40, why artists need a lawyer before an agent

1:17:00: Meditation, AI and the future | What machines will eat, what they never will

The philosophical core of the episode. The founding story of the episode, in a single sequence. Laura Brown recounts the morning in February 2022 when InStyle fired her entire team on Zoom, the idea born in a bar with her friend Kristina O'Neill, and the caption that set everything in motion: All the Cool Girls Get Fired. A passage that blends sharp anecdote, a charge against the culture of spin in fashion media, and a universal lesson on the art of admitting a fall.

Thanks to Laura for stopping by TheBoldWay.

For thirty years, Laura Brown sat at the center of American fashion media. Editor-in-chief of InStyle. Before that, Harper's Bazaar, W, Details. She put Oprah, Jennifer Lawrence and a generation of Hollywood actresses on the cover. Then in February 2022, she was fired on Zoom alongside her entire team.

The unwritten rule of her industry: stay silent, say you "decided to move on," save face. She did the opposite. She posted a photo on Instagram with a caption that became a book, then a movement: All the Cool Girls Get Fired, co-written with Kristina O'Neill.

Three years on, she runs LB Media, chairs the Creative Council at (RED) — Bono's HIV foundation — and has become one of the sharpest voices on the collapse of legacy media. In this episode, she explains why traditional press is crumbling, how power has migrated from the magazine to the individual, and what she truly learned the day she lost everything.

    Timeline

04:00: Laura Brown's journey | from Australia to New York in September 2001, 30 years in fashion media (W, Details, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle)

10:00: All the Cool Girls Get Fired | how publicly admitting she got fired landed like a punk move in an industry obsessed with spin

18:00: Mental health and work identity | why fusing your ego with your job title is the biggest mistake of a career

23:00: The recipe for bouncing back after a firing | listen to your gut, tell the truth, identify what actually made you happy in the old job

27:00: LB Media and the entrepreneurial mindset | registering a company on LegalZoom as insurance, the rollercoaster mentality, the side hustle that becomes a business

30:00: The collapse of traditional media | the individual becomes the medium, why the NYT, The New Yorker and The Atlantic are thriving while the rest crumbles

41:00: Her "light bulb lady" business model | rejecting corporate life, back-to-back Zooms and "brovelords," with freedom as the core value

47:00: The "New York slap" and her Australian roots | modest childhood in Sydney, single mother, financial independence at 40

56:00: Condé Nast as Versailles, AI, and a message to the youth | ChatGPT is neither your shrink nor your lover, and life still comes down to people
