            • #199: What Steps Do I Need To Take To Be Ready For A New Relationship?

When Caller Shea, a woman desperately trying to escape the trauma of an abusive upbringing and a deceitful marriage, discovers the power of her own resilience and self-worth, she must confront the anxiety of entering the dating world and the fear of being "tricked" again.

"I am learning to be grounded in who I am, working towards understanding this idea of who God has told me that I am, and I am definitely going to have my eyes wide open to a partner that will cherish me."

Shea grew up with a father who had a sex addiction and was physically abusive. She served a mission for the LDS church, during which her heart was softened towards marriage. After meeting her husband, Shea asked him questions about his addiction and was lied to. Ten years later, her husband confessed, and her world was turned upside down. Shea attended an ARP group, invested in therapy, and eventually divorced her husband. Despite the pain, Shea has found joy in her life and is now looking to pursue healthy relationships in the future. She is aware of her desire to be cherished by a man, but also recognizes the need to stay grounded and not be desperate in her pursuit of a new relationship.

              In this episode:

              1. How can we make sure that we don't enter a relationship in desperation?

              2. What does it look like to discern healthy relationships from unhealthy ones?

              3. How to get ready to enter a new relationship after a divorce.

            • #197: How Do We Keep Our Marriage A Priority?

Callers Brent & Robyn are a married couple navigating the effects of past trauma on their relationship. They are committed to each other's individual healing process and creating a safe space for one another to process their emotions.

When trauma and codependency collide, true connection and healing emerge with honest communication and a commitment to each other's growth.

"When you come into the relationship with trauma and you come into the relationship with shame, you're naturally going to try to use each other as medication to solve those things. But if you're both committed to this relationship, then in many ways, you're both committed to each other's individual healing process, and you're committed to being an asset to their individual healing process."

Brent and Robyn entered their marriage with a lack of understanding of how their individual traumas and past relationships would affect their marriage. They soon realized that past traumas, even when openly discussed, still caused trauma and changed their behavior. This caused disharmony in their marriage. To address this, they realized they were both codependent and needed to do their own individual work. After Brent attended a men's retreat, he began to work on himself and recognize that his value comes from God. He now understands that Robyn needs him to not depend on her for his value, but to be a strong partner who can help her with her individual healing process.

              In this episode:

              1. How do you keep your marriage a priority in the face of trauma and codependency?

              2. How can couples navigate each other's triggers without creating further tension and disconnection?

              3. How can partners commit to each other's individual healing process and support each other in creating a safe space for vulnerability?

Therapy Brothers Discussion: The brothers talk about reclaiming your purpose and how to overcome the void and emptiness that can come with achieving the goals we have set out. Tyler and Brannon discussed the lies we have been sold about what success is, and how to reclaim our purpose. Brannon suggested that we start by asking ourselves the question: who did God design me to be? We must take action in order to follow our purpose. Tyler shared his own example of how he found his purpose through his passion for UFC and overcoming trauma and shame.

"Our peace and our freedom comes through our alignment with God and alignment with truth. When I am living in accordance to that purpose, I feel alive. And when I'm not, I feel something missing."

              In This Episode:

              1. Why do we feel empty and depressed despite achieving the success we seek?

              2. Measuring our lives in terms of different values than those traditionally accepted.

              3. How can we align ourselves with God's purpose to find true fulfillment in life?

            • #195: My Family Is So Dysfunctional. How Do I Enjoy Being Around Them For The Holidays?

Brannon and Tyler have a conversation about Setting boundaries with family. I learned that setting expectations that are not based on reality can cause more pain and suffering and that in order to be successful in interacting with family, we need to be honest about our boundaries and not take things personally. It is important to have a plan in place to manage triggers, as well as to take care of our own physical and emotional needs while spending time with family. A protective protagonist must confront the trauma of their family's past and manage their boundaries while navigating the family dynamics of the holidays in order to reclaim their power and find joy.

"Rather than operating from what you think things should be, operate from a level of what things are."

              In this episode:

              1. How can you enjoy being around my dysfunctional family during the holidays?

              2. What are some important things to understand to be successful when spending time with family?

              3. How can you break free from family roles and expectations when visiting family during the holidays?

            • #193: Let's Talk About The "F" word

Therapy Brothers Discussion: "Forgiveness is about freedom and liberation from the burden that we get dumped on through no fault of our own."

A woman was married to a man who was emotionally abusive, gaslighting her and cheating on her with her best friend. She worked hard to make the marriage work, but after finding out about the affair she was crushed. She went through a process of shock, confusion, anger, sadness, and devastation. She felt betrayed and couldn't trust him. Eventually she realized that forgiveness was about liberating herself from the burden and not about forgiving him. She was able to surrender it and gain a bigger perspective.

              In this episode:

              1. What does it mean to forgive, and why is it so difficult?

              2. What are the benefits of forgiveness?

              3. What are some scenarios in which forgiveness might be necessary?

            • #192: If You Had Broken Trust, What Would You Do To Rebuild It?

Therapy Brothers Discussion: After years of hiding his addiction and breaking his wife's trust, a man must face his demons head on to rebuild any chance of a future with her and become a better man.

I had broken my partner's trust by betraying her and engaging in harmful behavior. I was desperately trying to hide it, but she had eventually discovered what I had done. We had reached a point of broken trust and I wanted to fix it, so I began to work on myself. I looked inwardly and honestly at my own behavior, chipping away at my character flaws, and becoming proactive in my honesty with people. I worked on myself and I watched myself transform into a passionate, tender, curious and empathetic man, and I was finally able to find real recovery.

              In this episode:

              1. How can you rebuild trust after it has been broken?

              2. How does one reconcile a life of addiction with a desire to be honest and have integrity?

              3. How can you work through character flaws that may have contributed to breaking trust in the first place?

            • #191: How Can My Wife And Children See Me For Something Other Than The Things I've Done?

Caller Larry's Question: "We’re almost a year since D-Day why do I continue to lie and gaslight my wife when all she wants is honesty?"

Larry is a married man who has had a series of betrayals in his marriage over the past 15 years. He recently had a 15-month physical affair and has been seeing a CSAT since August to work on recovering his marriage. He is looking for his wife and children to see him differently for the things he has done. Larry is looking for validation and connection from others, stemming from his childhood where his father was a tough critic and his mother was a confidant. He is now aware that he needs to look within himself to answer the questions he has and let go of needing validation from others.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

              1. Why we often feel the need to escape.

              2. The impact that our parents have on us growing up and how that contributes to our patterns of behavior.

              3. How important it is to receive love and validation when we are children.
