So many of us have been raised to prioritize romantic partnership and finding “the one,” over anything else, including some of our other, long-standing platonic relationships. Today we’re exploring the idea of Decentering Romance — a concept you may have seen on your social media feeds — which asks us to explore what it looks like to seek romantic desire without letting it push out the other important relationships in our lives.
Joining me for this discussion is licensed marriage and family therapist, Tiffany Hall. Tiffany is a coach, speaker, and writer based in the Philadelphia area who is passionate about working with women to understand the roles they play in their relationships and how it impacts who they are. During our conversation, we discussed the pitfalls of making romantic love the center of your life, how you can still maintain your friendships when dating, and the cultivation of family dynamics that honor non-romantic life partners.

When a therapist decides to terminate with a client, it may bring up lots of feelings for the client around shame, embarrassment, and rejection. Online, you may have seen people referring to termination as being “fired” by their therapist. Let’s dig into this a little bit more and explore the reasons why a therapist might “fire” their client.
Returning to dig deeper into this with me are Dr. Donna Oriowo, an award-winning DEI advocate, international speaker and certified sex and relationship therapist in the Washington D.C. metro area and Dr. D'Andria Jackson, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Psychological Consultant, and mental health speaker. During our conversation, we discussed some of the reasons why a therapist might terminate with a client, strategies for dealing with feelings of rejection that may come up after a therapist terminates with you, and how to become comfortable with the idea of one day graduating from therapy.

Get ready, because class is almost in session. Welcome to the TBG University podcast tailored for the 20-something who’s packing for a new year on campus, thinking through their gap year, enrolling in a community college, grabbing their stoles for graduation, and everything in between. I’m your host & TBG U Coordinator, Jayna Ellis.
On TikTok, you’ll often find jokes about how many of us felt like we only had a job as a barista waiting for us at the end of our 4 years of college. At times, the post-grad job market can seem pretty bleak, which is why today, I’m joined by an expert in helping Gen Z find jobs to provide some tips on how to navigate this process. Her name is Jade Walters, and she is the founder of The Ninth Semester, a platform that provides weekly career tips + job postings for an audience of 100,000 early career professionals to help them secure the bag and grow in their budding careers. Adding onto that experience, she also works in candidate marketing as an Employer Branding Specialist at WayUp, a job board for students and grads.
In our conversation, we discuss some tips for the application and interview process, how to navigate the catch-22 of needing experience to get a job while also needing a job to get experience, and ways to keep it pushing when it feels like all you’re getting is no's and rejection letters.

Let's take a collective deep breath and explore all the feels after the big news of the weekend. President Joe Biden has announced he isn't seeking re-election and Vice-President Kamala Harris is the presumptive nominee. Whether you're excited, anxious, hesitant, or somewhere in between, it’s all valid. Tune in as I share some of my thoughts and feelings and hopefully find some comfort in knowing you're not alone.

While therapists are often revered for our contributions to the mental wellness of others, our culture can also be guilty of denying them us humanity with assumptions that we’re always willing to provide therapeutic advice at the drop of a dime or that we don’t feel things too.
Today, I brought the group chat back together to discuss how therapists are showing up in our everyday lives. Dr. Ayanna Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith joined me to discuss the importance of setting boundaries with friends and family when seeking therapeutic advice, how to ensure we’re not allowing our work to bleed into our personal lives, and the biggest misconceptions people tend to have about therapists' lives.

Earlier this week, I got the chance to chat with Crissle of The Read as we discussed her journey to graduating with her Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. As a special bonus, we also sat down to answer some of your listener letters from The Read, as well as a few inquiries that were sent in by the TBG community. We touched on topics such as feeling like you’re behind in your career, setting boundaries with abusive parents, sharing a therapist with your friends, and more.

Fans of The Read podcast have followed co-host Crissle’s journey as she went back to school in the hopes of becoming a therapist. Well, she’s graduated y’all, so of course it was only right to have her join us to talk a little bit about her journey and what advice she has for other aspiring therapists.
In case you’re unfamiliar with Crissle, she is half of the critically acclaimed comedy podcast The Read and her work has been featured in the Washington Post, ESSENCE, Slate, Buzzfeed, and several other media outlets. She considers meeting Beyoncé to be one of the most thrilling events of her life. During our conversation, we discuss the challenges of navigating grad school as a public figure, how to take care of yourself when working with clients triggers old wounds, and what Crissle hopes to do with her degree now that she’s graduated.

Some of you may know that July is one of my favorite months of the year, and that’s because it’s when we observe Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, we’ve chosen the theme, Holding Space for Healers, putting the spotlight on the therapists and all those who’ve dedicated their careers to holding space for others. All month long, you can expect conversations centered around the experiences and perspectives of mental health professionals.
To kick the month off, we’re sharing a compilation of some of the greatest gems, tips, and insights from our 3-part “Becoming a Therapist” series. You’ll hear from my accomplished and brilliant colleagues — Josephine Ampaw Greene, Dr. Kimberly Applewhite, Dr. D’Andria Jackson, and Dr. Donna Oriowo – as they share their advice on navigating the licensure process, doing the internal work necessary before seeing clients, some of the practical and financial concerns involved with being a therapist, and what it looks like to take care of yourself outside of your work as a therapist.

Some of you may have seen the viral Apple Music list of 100 best albums of all time and raised a few eyebrows at some of the choices made. So of course we had to give our own Black girl spin on the list, and today I’m joined by some of the TBG team members to share the albums that have been quintessential to our development as Black women. Joining me is our Community Assistant, Nyesha, our Project Manager, Lex, our Production Assistant, Zariah, and our Senior Producer, Ellice.
As you hear us respond to various album-related prompts, like most underrated album or an album that reminds us of childhood, feel free to respond with your own answers by sending us a tweet @therapy4bgirls or tagging us on IG or TikTok @therapyforblackgirls.

Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.
College, an experience already notorious for its difficulty, can be a lot harder to navigate if you’re also dealing with a medical disorder or learning disability. These experiences are covered under the term neurodivergent, and today we’re shining light on what it looks like to pursue an education as a neurodivergent person.
Joining us today to talk about their experience as a neurodivergent college student is Chicago-based creative, Kai Foster. Kai has humorously documented the ups and downs of young adulthood via sit-down chats, vlogs, and poetry since 2017. Beyond the camera, Kai attends film school and pursues independent documentary projects.
During our conversation, we discuss what it means to be neurodivergent, the importance of on-campus accommodations, and how to advocate for your needs when a professor is reluctant to understand them.
