After growing up in an abusive home, I never 'bought' the theory that Narcissists are Narcissists because of their upbringing. Katherine Kleis' story has many parralels to mine. She joins me to discuss her upbringing, how she left her Narcissistic parents, and how she healed from Narcissistic relationships.
No matter where you come from or where you have been, it is important to never stop fighting for yourself.
Katherine runs STAND Coaching. Her mission is to help empower clients to take back control of their life. You can connect with her here: https://www.standcoaching.com/

In this episode I talk with psychologist Dr. Kerry McAvoy about her memoir, Love You More, which covers the three years she spent with a man she now describes as a narcissistic sociopath. Kerry met him on a dating app about a year after her husband of 31 years died of cancer, at a point when nearly everything she had built was gone.
She walks me through the red flags that showed up on their very first date. When she discovered his affairs two months into the marriage, she stayed, and she explains why. Her reasons had a lot to do with how seriously she takes a vow, and also with the fact that she had already sold her home in the US and was relocating to Mexico with him.
We spend a good part of the conversation on the sex addiction treatment she paid for, which kept the focus entirely on him and left her own betrayal trauma untreated. Kerry also talks about the financial abuse, which ran in an unusual direction. He never cut her off from money; he spent her inheritance freely while contributing none of his own. She describes the business they built together in Mexico and how she used his attempt to pull her back into the relationship as her chance to get the company back in her name.
Near the end, Kerry shares why she believes he was poisoning her with arsenic after she signed a will that would have left him the company. Survivors rarely say this kind of thing out loud because they expect to be disbelieved, and I have worked with a client who went through something very similar.
Kerry now creates content and runs a survivor community called Toxic Free Relationship Club. You can find her at @KerryMcAvoyPhD on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Clapper, and on her podcast, Breaking Free From Narcissistic Abuse.

In this episode I go back to one of the topics I get the most emails about, which is trauma bonding. My early episode on trauma bonding and how we can heal is still my most downloaded, and I recently heard from a listener who said it helped her leave a relationship she had been in for seven years. Since that episode came out so long ago, I wanted to take a step back for anyone who is newer here and explain what a trauma bond actually is.
I talk about how a trauma bond forms through a repeated cycle of abuse mixed with intermittent positive reinforcement, and why that pattern conditions us to accept behavior that would have alarmed us at the start. I use the example of a partner who criticizes everything you do and then tells you how beautiful you look and wants to take you out, and I explain how the love bombing at the beginning of the relationship becomes the thing we keep waiting to get back. By the end, a crumb of affection can feel as good as the whole meal did in the beginning.
I also walk through the signs that you might be trauma bonded. One of the biggest is knowing you need to leave and still feeling unable to go. I share some of my own story here, including how I had been a life coach for seven years when I met my ex and still believed he understood relationships better than I did.

What does Narcissistic Abuse look and feel like? I dive into that question with Trey as we explore his journey in healing.
Trey is a content creator and coach. There are many content creators on Instagram and TikTok, but few speak so you can really hear it. Trey's message spoke to me. I knew little about his story before we recorded and our similarities amazed me.
In this episode, Trey walks us through his story and how he understood he was in an abusive relationship. This is a must listen to episode, especially for those that are in the aftermath of abuse.

When married to a narcissist, separating is only the first step to finding peace and starting your healing journey. There’s still the divorce, and most court systems encourage you to work with your abuser to find a peaceful resolution. Working with a narcissist can be an emotionally straining journey and almost always ends in a High-Conflict Divorce.
This podcast discusses some signs you're co-parenting with a Narcissist. It ends with a Q&A of common questions on this topic.

You know something is wrong. You just can’t always explain what it is.
Why do you keep apologizing when you didn’t do anything wrong? Why can one nice interaction make you question…
You Are Not Crazy is a podcast about making sense of the relationship experiences that don’t make sense.
I’m Jessica Knight, an emotional abuse coach and survivor. I take the confusing, contradictory, often ordinary-looking moments inside emotional abuse, coercive control, trauma bonds, narcissistic relationships, and high-conflict separation and slow them down so we can understand what is actually happening.
We look beyond labels and individual incidents to the patterns underneath them: what a behavior does, what it gets you to do in response, what happens when you resist it, and what you eventually learn to believe about yourself.
Because emotional abuse doesn’t only hurt. It can change the way you communicate, make decisions, respond to conflict, interpret other people’s behavior, and trust your own perception.
Here, we talk about gaslighting, manipulation, trauma bonding, intermittent reinforcement, coercive control, high-conflict divorce, post-separation abuse, difficult co-parenting dynamics, and the process of rebuilding self-trust after a relationship that taught you to doubt yourself.
But this isn’t a podcast about diagnosing every difficult person or telling you that every conflict is abuse. It’s about understanding the pattern.
What happened? What did it make you do? Why did your response make sense at the time? And what changes once you can finally see the mechanism underneath it?
You are not crazy. There is an explanation.
Let’s find it.
