My cousin-in-law Angie joins the podcast to open up about a very serious medical issue she faced earlier this year. When Angie started experiencing lethargy, excess bleeding during her periods, hair loss, and frequent urination, her doctors chalked it up to stress and anxiety, and she chalked it up to "being 32." As her list of symptoms got longer and more intense, Angie found herself going to a series of doctors to figure out what was wrong. Angie learned there was a Fibroid growing in her uterus that needed to be surgically removed. All the while, she was helping her brother through a tragedy, taking over her law firm, and planning her wedding. Angie shares how she navigated this medical crisis, what she wished she knew before ever knowing what a Fibroid was, how it impacted her relationship, and what she wishes she knew.
Uterine Fibroidsaffect up to 80% of women by age 50. 25-50% of those are symptomatic.
Approximately 25% to 50% of women with fibroids are symptomatic, experiencing heavy menses, reproductive issues, pain, increased urinary frequency, and anemia. There is a general lack of awareness of fibroids among women and their potential health impact. One survey documented an average of 3.6 years to seek treatment, and 41% saw at least two healthcare providers before diagnosis.
