  • Suicide Awareness with Special Guest Rachael Clement Fiore

**Trigger Warning: This episode contains mentions of suicide.**

Have you ever found yourself unsure of how to approach the serious and stigmatized topic of suicide? You're not alone. So many of us want to talk about this issue with someone we care about, but sometimes can’t find the words.

In this vital episode of Building Resilience, we are peeling back the layers on suicide awareness, facilitating an open dialogue that is both respectful and compassionate.

Together with my remarkable guest (and wonderful daughter-in-law), Rachael Clement Fiore, we are sharing stereotypical myths on this episode today, and hoping to eradicate these myths surrounding suicide and encourage open conversations as a potential lifesaver. Rachael not only is a third year nursing student with QPR Gatekeeper training for suicide prevention, but she tragically  lost her older brother to suicide a short time ago. Through our heartfelt conversation, we aspire to forge a community where individuals feel safe discussing their feelings without judgment.

Listen in to hear compelling statistics that bring to light the gravity of the issues as we strive  to correct common misconceptions and urge society to take perceived cries for help seriously. Our aim is to foster a space where those grappling with suicidal thoughts can express their distress openly and seek the assistance they need.

If you need help, reach out—call the suicide hotline at 988 (US) and 1-833-456-4566 (Canada).

  • Why We Cry

Whether it's an episode of "This is Us" or a commercial with a sad-looking dog, one thing's for certain—I'm a crier.

Tears have a language of their own—a way to communicate with our body and the nervous system. In this episode of Building Resilience, we're diving deep into understanding the emotion behind our tears and the science that accompanies them.

From the essential basal tears that keep our eyes lubricated to the deeply emotional tears that provide a much-needed release, tears play a crucial role in our lives. But what's often overlooked is the societal pressure that surrounds crying, particularly labeling it as a sign of weakness. We're breaking down those misconceptions and exploring the benefits of crying.

From offering stress relief by releasing oxytocin and endorphins to fostering relationship strengthening through vulnerability, tears have far-reaching benefits. For those who might find themselves seldom shedding a tear, we'll delve into the reasons behind this emotional response.

So whether you're a crier or not, this episode promises to offer an emotional roller-coaster filled with self-discovery, acceptance, and the therapeutic benefits of a good cry.

  • Inviting in Wonder and Awe

Have you ever been struck by the sheer wonder of a sunrise or the overwhelming beauty of a piece of art? That's 'awe' at work.

In today's episode of Building Resilience, I dive deep into this powerful emotion. We discuss its simplicity, the numerous benefits it offers, and how it can help lead us to a more joyful, fulfilling, and purposeful life.

From the Northern Lights to architectural wonders, the world is full of awe-inspiring sights. I also touch upon 'thin places'—spots where heaven and earth seem to intertwine.

But awe doesn’t have to come from a place we go— I share some actionable ways you can cultivate and experience more of this incredible emotion in our day-to-day lives.  It's about being present-minded, enhancing creativity, and inviting more joy into our lives.

  • The Whole Human Experience

No life is going to be perfect—but the kicker? We wouldn’t want a perfect life even if we could get it!

In today's episode, we dive deep into life's 50-50 mix of good and bad times, illustrating it with two poignant real-life tales: a European trip gone awry and a client's emotional journey with a loved one's health.

We’ll talk about the work of positive psychology pioneer Martin Seligman, psychotherapist Deb Dana, and the moving memoir "Everything All at Once" by Steph Catudal, which masterfully showcases resilience in the face of profound loss.

Much like the Japanese art of kintsugi, we can create a complete life, full of beauty and resilience from our broken pieces.

  • Lessons from the Northern Lights

How many times have we overlooked the beauty in our lives because we were simply viewing it through the wrong lens? In this episode, I share my husband Rob's and my quest to witness the breathtaking Northern Lights in Norway, and the parallel quest my son undertook at the same time—and the unexpected lessons we all learned about perspective, patience, and faith.

Just like our quest for the Northern Lights, our lives are filled with uncertainties, apparent failures, and changes in perspective. But, by applying the lessons learned from our journey, we can open ourselves up to new ways of seeing and experiencing the world.
