In this episode of From the Couch, Dr. Tracy teaches a relationship skill that quietly changes everything: differentiation. It’s the ability to hold onto your sense of self while staying connected to someone else, and to remember that another person’s thoughts, feelings, needs, or reactions are not automatically a commentary on your worth, your lovability, or whether you’re “doing enough.”
Dr. Tracy brings this to life with a real moment from parenting: she’s invited to teach in her child’s classroom, announces it excitedly, and her child panics, afraid of being embarrassed. Instead of vacuuming up the reaction and making it about herself, she practices differentiation by staying beside her child’s experience, validating the feeling, getting curious about what’s underneath it, and co-creating a plan for what her child needs. The result is trust, safety, and connection, not defensiveness or shame.
She then zooms out and invites listeners to picture the same moment in adult relationships: when a partner comes home in a bad mood, when a parent makes a guilt-laced request, when an in-law pushes a boundary. Differentiation is how you stop fusing with other people’s emotions, stop personalizing everything, and start responding from clarity and connection.
