"How will divorce affect my kids?" is one of the first questions any parent will ask themselves when deciding to end a marriage. While we don't have a crystal ball to predict the future, we do have endless resources to turn to for guidance, advice, and information related to how divorce affects children.
The best resources in my opinion are the grown up children of divorce; the adults who can look back and clearly identify what affected them, how it felt, and how it has shaped them today.
On this episode of Moms Moving On, we hear from good friend and talented Author, Entrepreneur, and Instagram personality Tara Clark, of @modernmomprobs. Tara experienced divorce as a child and gives us an open and honest take of how divorce affected her life both as a child and now as a mother.
Tara Clark is an author, content creator, mother, and the Founder of Modern Mom Probs.
Tara began her career at Nickelodeon, overseeing social media for Nick Jr. and Nick@Nite. After becoming a mom and recognizing a hole in the online space for moms to authentically connect, she used her social media skill-set to launch Modern Mom Probs in 2017. She has since amassed a following of over 700K women, solidifying herself as a humorous and authentic voice of a generation of women, and her brand as a go-to resource for modern moms.
Tara published her first parenting book, “Modern Mom Probs: A Survival Guide for 21st Century Mothers” in April of 2021. Additionally, her work has been featured in prominent publications including Buzzfeed, Today, Parents.com, Romper and Yahoo Life.
As an advocate for maternal mental health support, Tara held the honor of being the 2021 Spokesperson of The Blue Dot Project, the national symbol for maternal mental health survivor-ship, support, and solidarity.
In late 2021, Tara launched Modern Mom Style Box, a clothing rental subscription service that gives members access to unlimited styles for one flat monthly fee.
Tara holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Villanova University and an MBA from Metropolitan College of New York in Media Management. She currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and son.

How am I going to do this? What will single parenting be like? Will my child develop anxiety? What will people SAY?!
Any way we slice it, the end of a marriage or relationship of any kind, is going to cause a healthy amount of anxiety. It's only natural. But when we don't manage these anxieties, moving on becomes an almost impossible task to complete.

If you've ever felt down about your divorce, confided in your feelings to someone else, and you were met with a response of "Look on the bright side!" or "It could be worse, you'll get over it!" you know how infuriating it feels to have your feelings shut down. That's called toxic positivity, Toxic positivity involves dismissing negative emotions and responding to distress with false reassurances rather than empathy. It comes from feeling uncomfortable with negative emotions
But there's no place for that in divorce. You are entitled to your feelings after divorce, because as we've all learned, you need to feel them to heal them.
That's where our guest Whitney Goodman, of the popular Instagram account @sitwithwhit comes in. Whitney is a licensed marriage and family therapist and author of the new book "Toxic Positivity: Keeping It Real In a World Obsessed with Positive Thinking.
Whitney Goodman is the radically honest psychotherapist behind the hugely popular Instagram account @sitwithwhit, the author of Toxic Positivity, and the owner of The Collaborative Counseling Center, a private therapy practice in Miami, FL. She helps people who want to improve their relationships and emotional awareness.
Whitney earned her undergraduate degree at Tulane University and a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Miami. She has additional training and certifications in working with couples, trauma, and clients who have been diagnosed with chronic illness. Whitney has her own column in Psychology Today and has been featured in dozens of domestic and international publications, including The New York Times, Teen Vogue, NY Magazine, Instyle, and Good Morning America.

Liz is also a Licensed NLP Master Practitioner, Communications Skills Coach & Trainer, and has more than a decade of experience in working with both divorcing clients and the professionals who serve them.

There are 20-25 million divorced people between the ages of 35-65, meaning that the majority of them are divorced over 40. Between the loneliness and quietness of being alone once your children are grown and out of the house and the fact that you're now starting over again as a completely different person than you were when you were married long ago - there are SO many heartstrings that divorce over 40 seems to pull at.
Our guest, Daniel Herrold, not only shares how to face all of the icky stuff that comes up when you are divorced over 40 - he's also bringing together that population of divorced men and women with his wildly successful divorce community.
In 2020, he Co-Founded Divorced Over Forty, a group that provides community to divorced men & women across the world who are in the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s. This community provides support through content on its social media channels, as well as hosts events with a specific intention of fostering and cultivating friendships. With over 10,000 strong virtual, tribes have been formed all over the world.
Daniel is a divorced dad of 3 daughters currently living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. You can find his community on Instagram at @divorcedover40 or follow him personally at @danielherrold.

Just a quick note before we get into today's episode. The topic of parental alienation has been a bit of a controversial one in the world of divorce and co-parenting. It's important to remember that the views, ideas, beliefs, and opinions expressed in this episode are those of the guest, and not necessarily shared by the Moms Moving On team.
That said, both mothers and fathers alike have found themselves on the receiving end of hurtful comments made by the other parent to the children. Children almost never escape the wrath of a high-conflict co-parent, and in some extreme cases, this type of behavior can result in full alienation of the other parent.
That's where our guest, Ginger Gentile, comes in.
Ginger Gentile is an activist documentary filmmaker dedicated to addressing ignored issues and shedding light on solutions. Her film, Erasing Family, talks about the harsh realities of parental alienation which premiered at Lincoln Center in 2019 and showcased the trauma children face in high-conflict custody battles.
Ginger passionately advocates for those who don't have a voice. You can learn more about Ginger, here.
