The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Over the years, there have been many public conversations around academic institutions failing to adequately support Black women, leaving many brilliant sisters feeling burned out, discouraged, and undervalued. At the same time, the desire for Black women to pursue higher education and secure tenure roles at Universities still exists, and rightfully so. Black women deserve a seat in higher education just like everyone else. The question is, for those who want to pursue higher education, what should they know beforehand?
Joining me this week to discuss Black women navigating the academic arena are Professor Helen A. Neville, an Educational Psychology and African American Studies professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Dr. Della V. Mosley, co-founder of Academics for Black Survival and Wellness. In our conversation, we break down the difficulties Black women face while pursuing tenure track positions in academia, what Black women should consider in their assessment of whether to get into academia, and what other pathways exist to pursue higher education.

Over the past few years, you’ve probably found yourself online viewing and reacting to bite size pieces of mental health information. At times in an attempt to better understand ourselves and the world we live in, we digest and share pieces of information that we don’t fully understand or properly reflect our experiences. Take for example the terms trauma bonding, gaslighting, and narcissism. All terms that you’ve probably heard before, and maybe even used in your everyday life. But, are you using them correctly?
Joining me today for another one of our Group Chat conversations are my friends and colleagues Dr. Ayana Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith, both psychologists in Atlanta. During our conversation we break down the definition of key terms we’ve noticed people using online and share suggestions on how to be more mindful around information online.

If you’re someone who enjoys taking personality tests you might have heard of enneagrams. If you’re not familiar, enneagrams are models of the human psyche that are based around nine intertwining personality archetypes. This week I’m joined by Chichi Agorom, a Certified Enneagram Teacher & Practitioner and the Author of The Enneagram for Black Liberation to chat all about it. During our conversation we chatted about the history of the enneagram, differentiating between the nine personality types, and how the enneagram can be used as a tool for black resistance and liberation.

It can be hard to know where to start to get solid information about food and nutrition as so many sources share information that is incorrect and can be damaging to both our health and our relationship to food. Joining me this week to share their insights and expertise about all things food and nutrition are Registered Dietitians and Certified Diabetes Educators Wendy Lopez and Jessica Jones. Wendy and Jessica are also the hosts of the popular podcast Food Heaven. During our conversation they provided definitions to some important terms like intuitive eating and diet culture, we discussed the cultural nuances that impact our relationships to food, and we discussed how our relationship to food impacts our mental health.

As part of our programming efforts for Minority Mental Health Awareness Month we’re closing out this July with a special episode featuring author and theologian Candice Benbow. Candice is a multi-genre theologian reimagining how faith can be a tool of liberation and transformation for Black women and girls. In her work Candice challenges Black women to think critically about how they see God, themselves, and the world around them. Our conversation explores processing church hurt, finding your identity within a church community, and Candice’s new book Red Lip Theology: For Church Girls Who've Considered Tithing to the Beauty Supply Store When Sunday Morning Isn't Enough.

This Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, we've been exploring how we as Black women can free ourselves from the external and internal pressures of showing up as “superwomen.” For this bite-sized bonus episode, we've tapped a member of our Sister Circle community to share her experience of playing the superwoman role, We've also enlisted the help of past guest therapists LeNaya Smith Crawford, LMFT and Kristen Feemster, LMFT to provide mantras and words of encouragement for her but they just may help you as well.

In recent years there’s been no shortage of documentaries, podcasts and articles about cults and the people who lead them. I’ve been very curious about the psychology behind cults and how members become part of them and wanted to talk with someone to help shed some light on how it tends to happen. Joining me this week is Dr. Ashley Tisdale, a Postdoctoral Fellow at American University researching the intersection of disability, race, and horror. Dr. Ash is also the author of Cult Community, a newsletter for cult fanatics. She and I chatted about the history of cults, cult leaders, survivors, and victims, the similarities between cults and abusive relationships, and things that may alert you to something being a cult.

The relationship we have with our therapists is unlike any other we have in our lives. They typically know lots about us while we usually only know a little about them. This is designed so that our emotional safety and needs are prioritized in the space but it can also lead to lots of questions that sometimes go unanswered. Joining me today for another one of our group chat conversations are my friends and colleagues Dr. Ayanna Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith, both psychologists in Atlanta, to answer some of the questions you might have about your therapist that you didn’t want to ask. During our conversation we chatted about whether we actually have favorite or funniest clients, how we handle seeing clients out publicly, what it means if you find yourself attracted to your therapist, and whether or not it’s ok to be friends with your therapist after you’re done with therapy.

In 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives announced that July would be known as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This resolution would honor her work as an advocate for mental health awareness, particularly in the Black community. The goal for the month is to enhance public awareness of mental illness among minorities.
In keeping with this sentiment and Mrs. Moore’s legacy, Therapy for Black Girls takes the opportunity to dig deeper into broadening the conversation around mental health and mental illness each year in July. To kick us off for our month-long commemoration and raise awareness, we’ve created an oral history detailing the creation of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.
In this week’s episode, I'm joined by Dr. Linda Wharton Boyd, the convener of the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Task Force, and Albert R. Wynn, a former U.S. House of Representatives member. Dr. Boyd and Congressman Wynn were instrumental in creating Minority Mental Health Awareness Month after Bebe Moore Campbell’s passing in 2006. Our conversation explores the process of bringing Minority Mental Health Awareness Month to life, the impact Minority Mental Health Awareness Month has had over the years, and Bebe Moore Campbell’s continued legacy.

To close out our celebration of Black Music Month, this week I’m joined by Los Angeles based Psychotherapist, Syreeta Butler. In her work Syreeta has partnered with renowned music label - LVRN, introducing the first-ever Mental Health and Wellness department and program within a music label. During our conversation we explored the stressors that are unique to the music industry, the importance of music labels investing in the emotional well-being of their staff, and the ways that music labels and the music industry can do more to protect Black women.
