Are you looking for something new and insightful to add to your bookshelf? The Therapy for Black Girls Library has got you covered. Since so many of our community members love a good book, we'll be sharing interviews with the authors of some books we think you'll enjoy in these TBG Library episodes.
This week we’re reading Truth's Table: Black Women’s Musings on Life, Love, and Liberation. Truth’s Table is a collection of essays and stories documenting the lived theology and spirituality we need to hear in order to lean into a more freeing, loving, and liberating faith—from the hosts of the beloved Truth’s Table podcast. For this conversation I was joined by co-authors Dr. Christina Edmondson and Ms. Ekemini Uwan. We chatted about the creation story behind the book, how they managed the vulnerability required to write, their expansive ideas about faith and sprituality, and how they want this book to impact readers.

In the world of competitive sports, an athlete’s mentality can be their best or worst friend. While we may perceive the athletes in our lives, or on our screens, as superhuman, it’s important to remember that they are more human than super. As athletes like Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles take public steps to address and protect their mental health, it’s imperative that we continue to create a space for athletes to feel seen and heard. This week I’m joined by Olympic, World, and US National Champion Track and Field Sprinter Natasha Hastings. During our conversation we explored the types of pressures competitive athletes are up against and how coaches and family members can aid the athletes in their lives to suit up not just for their sport but also for their mental health.

In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, we’ve collaborated with NATAL, an award-winning audio docuseries about having a baby while Black. This week we’re passing the mic to Black parents to share their own stories on their own terms and highlighting those caring for and advocating on behalf of Black rural families at every stage of pregnancy, and beyond. In this crossover with NATAL, parent storytellers Shayla and Erick Brown, Anasia Sturdivant and Ciara Hunter adjust to life postpartum and the powerful transformations they've undergone. This episode also explores ancestral care practices passed down generations, postpartum mental health, the push for a national paid family leave program, and Crystal Starr Flowers, a Georgia-based lactation practitioner on her journey to birthwork.

So much of our adult lives are impacted by our work. For some, it can determine where we live, where our children go to school, and even what times we eat dinner. Additionally, the quality of our lives depends largely on who we work with, which is why our work experiences should be improving our lives and not dampening them. In this week’s session, I speak with one of my former professors, Dr. Kecia M. Thomas, Dean, professor, and expert in the psychology of workplace diversity. Our conversation explores the complexities of color blindness in the workplace, overt and covert signs of workplace discrimination, and the critical research on diversity resistance in the workplace.
🎉 This episode marks 5 years of the Therapy for Black Girls podcast! Thank you so much for your support and engagement.

As cannabis consumption continues to be prevalent, it’s imperative that we understand the science behind the plant. What is cannabis and how does it interact with our minds and bodies? And, what do we need to be mindful of when using cannabis to protect ourselves and those around us? This week I was joined by Neuroscientist and Professor Dr. Yasmin Hurd. During our conversation we explored the different properties in cannabis, the difference between CBD & THC, and what new important research is being done today centered around cannabis usage.

What is your version of happy? Sure, we don’t all have the same things in mind, but we do have something in mind when we think of personal happiness. Joining us this week to discuss how we work toward obtaining our vision of happiness is Rosetta Thurman, the Founder of Happy Black Woman. Rosetta and I chatted about how happiness is not about having stuff but instead about doing the stuff that you care the most about, how minimalism amplifies what we deem the most important, and how a minimalist approach to life can lead to us accomplishing dreams we’d never thought we’d see in this lifetime.

For the young people in our lives, test-taking can evoke feelings of stress and anxiety. As their guardians, teachers, and loved ones, many of us wonder how we can aid them to push past test anxiety and excel in their academic pursuits? Joining me for this conversation is Diane Placide, LPC, NCC, M.Ed. During our conversation we discussed what test anxiety is and what it might look like in a learning environment, how we can prepare our students to feel confident in a classroom or test taking setting, and what resources are available for youth dealing with test anxiety.

If you’ve been contemplating working with a therapist, you may have found yourself wondering if working with another Black woman is the best choice for you. There are many many reasons why this is a great choice but there is also a level of vulnerability in working with another sister that catches many by surprise. In this week’s episode I’m joined again by my friends and colleagues Dr. Joy Beckwith and Dr. Ayanna Abrams, both psychologists in Atlanta, to dig a little deeper into the dynamic that can occur when Black women work with Black women therapists. We discussed some of the joys and challenges of working with Black women therapists, we shared some of our own experiences of working with Black women therapists, and discussed how you can advocate for yourself to ensure you’re getting what you need out of therapy.
