Bonus episode of the Any Given Runday Podcast. After we finished episode 8, Aaron voiced his true opinion in how he felt about a lot of the rest and recovery protocols. Annoyed that he didn't express himself during the episode, Seán decides to hit the record button and air it out for everyone to listen to.
One of the things we love about this podcast is the different opinions. For you, maybe there is at least one of the four lads that you resonate with. Or you take a little from each person to apply to your own training.
Seán talks a little more about the opening and what he really wanted to rant about during this episode: https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-50837267
If you enjoyed this show and would like to see more of this kind of content on a Thursday, let us know on social media.
Updates on our marathon progress and more will be back to normal this Monday.
Show Notes:
4:20: Seán voices his annoyance with what happened after we finished episode 8 and Aaron explains how he truly felt.
9:30: Aaron's talk about supplements not getting to the root of the problem, reminds Seán of a recent article he read (see link at the top to validate his main point!)
12:15 "Any Given Court Day"?!
13:00: Why Protein Bars are not always a good source of protein
15:35: Eric talks about everything in moderation
19:30: Why one "bad" meal won't ruin the day
20:20: Wanting to bring an element of running to this episode, Seán asks the lads if they use running as therapy

In this episode of the podcast, the lads talk about rest and recovery strategies. What they feel has and hasn't worked for them and how they tailor their recovery. There's a couple of main things to note from this episode. What works for one person may feel like a waste of time for another and that correlation is not causation. For example, Seán talks about using compression clothing after a marathon and then takes an epsom salts bath. He didn't feel as sore as he thought the next day. Was it the compression salts, baths or his training that lead to this?
The third thing to take into account... well, that's for the end of the podcast which will lead to a part two that will drop this Thursday!
1:50 Aaron using a foam roller for his calves after his runs
4:30: Conor talks about massage guns and how he feels about them
6:15: Conor talks about his GAA club have a recovery chart and getting points for doing each activity
10:00: While Conor and Aaron use a foam roller at the end of a session, Eric talks about why he prefers it at the start of a session and his love for the Backballer over a normal foam roller
13:40: Seán talks about only using a Backballer or another foam roller for two minutes for his training and why.
15:55: After 31 years, Seán learns the correct pronunciation of the word "sliotar" and why he would use one in a warm-up.
17:40: Eric gets into details about the Doterra oils that he has been taking so far in his training along with his nutrition and sleep.
19:25: Conor disagrees with Seán on sleep being the 'cheapest' most underutilised tool along with the effects of CBD oil.
21:55: Why it is so hard to tell if one thing is definitely working for you
24:20: Saunas & Cold Showers
25:50: Epsom Salts baths, yay or nay
28:10: The importance of breathing and the breathing technique Seán would have his clients do after every Personal Training session.
After the outro of this week's podcast, get a behind the scenes look at why there will be a part two to this podcast where we discuss one of the lad's issues with what was said in this week's episode and much more. The bonus episode will go online this Thursday so make sure you are subscribed to the Any Given Runday Podcast!

Episode 5 of the Any Given Runday Podcast and we are catching up with Seán and how he wants to combine gym sessions for strength training along with his running. One of Seán's biggest beliefs with marathon training is that too many runners are getting injured because they do little to no strength training.
So we talk about the exercises he recommends, approach to nutrition and more.
0:40: A very important PSA concerning last week's episode.
1:30: Why Seán believes that more strength training is beneficial to running marathons
4:40: The type of strength training Seán does and his previous experiences balancing it with running.
6:05 Incorporating injury prevention with marathon training
8:35: If Seán had to pick 3 exercises only for strength training to prepare for a marathon, what would they be?

18:15: Balancing leg day with doing runs
