  • 109. But I Hate Meal Prepping & Planning

Eating is more than just eating. It's also all of the things surrounding eating -- like thinking of what to buy; actually going out and buying it; bringing it home, unpacking it, cooking it. What do we do if it's all too much? This episode also looks at:

    • Stef's attitude to food changing through having a family
    • Black and white thinking/perfectionism getting in the way of food preparation
    • Sarah's digital nomad lifestyle and recipe boxes
    • Exploring resistance
    • Cooking as an act of 'adulting'
    • Sarah's quick and easy go-tos
    • Intentionality in preparation
    • Decision making for family meals
    • What did Stef make for the first time?

  • 108. But IT'S NOT FAIR that recovery is so hard.

When we stop trying to control food and body size, it can feel unfair. It's not fair that some people are smaller and others aren't. It's not fair that some people can "eat normally" and others can't. In this episode, Stef & Sarah talk extensively about their feelings of resistance around various topics related to their bodies, plus...

    • My body isn't small – it's not fair!
    • My body can't work like it used to – it's not fair!
    • Would you rather be at the top-of-the-bottom or the bottom-of-the-top?
    • Sarah's relationship with her body pain and yoga
    • Stef's relationship with her body image
    • What if rejecting your body was the first place you learned to say NO to something?
    • "Being human is the process of learning and forgetting and remembering again."

  • 107. But Should I Journal?

Are you a journal-er? Do you want to be a journal-er? In this episode, we explore the benefits and drawbacks of journaling from the perspectives of Sarah (a journaler) and Stef (an ex-journaler). As you might expect, this is not a black and white issue; what feels helpful for some might not be as helpful for others. We'll look at:

    • Stef's journaling experiment
    • Can journaling make us more anxious? And if so, what else can we do?
    • Rambling, stream-of-consciousness journaling versus intention journaling
    • What if someone finds my journal??
    • Sarah pulls out one of her journal entries from the first time she met Stef in NYC
    • Handwriting versus typewritten
    • The pressure of journaling
    • Is it easier or harder to write when you're feeling low/depressed?
    • Decreasing perfectionism around journaling as a way to decrease perfectionism in general
    • Art journaling; bullet journaling
    • The Artists' Way by Julia Cameron
    • What journal prompt do you need right now?

  • 106. But How Do I Deal With Jealousy

Have you ever felt jealous of someone else's body? (Or anything else, really?) Comparison is normal, but if jealousy's got you down, this episode will teach you how to banish it, forever, from your life. Just kidding. But we WILL discuss:

    • The difference between envy and jealousy
    • What does jealousy feel like in the body?
    • A technique for jealousy
    • Sarah wants Stef's house but Stef wants Sarah's freedom
    • If we had the thing we were jealous of, it might play a supporting role, but would it really change things at the core?
    • Are we more prone to jealousy when we have potential to be the thing (or do or get the thing) we're jealous of?
    • It's not fair!!!
    • Does gratitude work to help us deal with jealousy? Or is that toxic positivity…
    • Jealousy is an emotion like anger or sadness; we don't "get rid of it," we learn to ride the wave
    • What can we learn about our values from jealousy?
    • What if I was really happier in a smaller body, and that's why I'm jealous of thinner people?

  • 105. Weight & Invisibility

The intersection of weight and visibility is discussed at length in this episode. Weight can make us feel more visible or less visible because it is something our culture pays attention to. When we lose weight, we are "seen"; when we gain weight, we may become invisible. We discuss this topic from psychodynamic and somatic perspectives; how might our weight be protecting us? Note: this episode is not suggesting that weight is pathological. Body sizes are diverse among humans depending on a multitude of factors, and largely dependent on genetics. This episode looks at weight, trauma, and visibility as one part of a larger picture.

    We discuss:

    • Unwanted sexual attention
    • Weight loss as a way of being "good" for parents
    • Weight as a "nice" identity; what if we lose weight and become more threatening to other females?
    • I have a conflicting desire to be seen and not to be seen
    • Why would we be afraid of meeting our own needs?
    • If we are visible – or exposed – what if we can't find safety in our hiding again?

  • 104. But I've Heard That Fasting Is Helpful...

Fasting is a trend that claims to have health benefits and influence on weight loss. What do we make of the hype? And how does it factor into people who have a history of eating disorders/disordered eating?

    • Fasting in religion
    • Fasting for wellness reasons
    • How restricting – even if it was one time many years ago – gets coded as trauma in the body and "sabotages" our fasting efforts later on.
    • The 5:2 "lifestyle"
    • The "big names" that influenced Sarah and Stef's fasting experiences
    • How do you know if you're fasting for health or fasting for control?
    • Hunger vs appetite
    • Is waiting to eat in the morning ever a good idea?
    • Fasting is not just a physiological event

    • Evelyn's favorite principle of IE (hint: it's not the same as Elyse's, Sarah's, or Stef's)
    • How do you know if you're doing Intuitive Eating right?
    • Evelyn's gets personal!
    • What Evelyn learned from her breast cancer diagnosis

      Listener Questions:

      • How do we handle food if we are taking a medication that increases appetite?

  • 102. Intuitive Eating with Co-Founder Elyse Resch

This week we are talking to one of the co-founders of Intuitive Eating, Elyse Resch! Alongside Evelyn Tribole, Elyse developed and wrote the book Intuitive Eating, which has gained popularity for people who have been burned by diets and want to get back in touch with their body's intuition around food. However, this process is more complicated than it sounds. Elyse answers questions from our community and explains many of the nuances of IE for our listeners.

    • Intuitive Eating: is it a method for weight loss?
    • How does IE work if you don't have reliable hunger and fullness cues?
    • Elyse reveals how she'd change up the principles for a future edition of the book
    • What is "future deprivation"?
    • Stef's favorite principle: Respect Your Body and how it applies to this work
    • What about highly processed foods?
    • How do you get to Gentle Nutrition (and/or Gentle Movement)?
    • Interoception: what is it and how do you develop it?
    • IE is not just instinct! It's "a dynamic interplay of instinct, emotion, and thought." Different parts of the brain are present to give us different pieces of information.
    • Community Question: What if I binged at night and I'm not hungry in the morning? Will my body think I'm restricting if I don't eat?
    • Community Question: How to say No to food but not in a restrictive way?
    • I feel sad when I have to stop eating
    • Eating without distractions
    • Did Elyse expect IE to get so big?

    • The value of a regulated voice
    • "Regul-eating"
    • Control as a mechanism of safety
    • The dynamic of differing opinions
    • The concept of Self-abandonment (as opposed to numbing)

    • Vulnerability and self disclosure on the podcast
    • Stef's episode with her Mom; Sarah's episode talking about her mom
