On this week's episode we dive into: what is a normal relationship with food? How is that different from an optimal relationship with food? Where does the nutrition jungle play a role in this? And while new years' diets are co-opting anti-diet and intuitive eating language, which may make you feel like you can get to a 'good' relationship with food by following their diet…we know that's not true. So what can we do about it?

On today's episode Dana and Cristina discuss how to navigate the chaos of January if you're in the "I broke up with dieting...now what?!" camp! How do you navigate eating to fuel yourself in a sustainable way without it being a diet? We know January can be a really stressful month with all the diet and fitness culture BS floating around, so our theme for the entire month is going to be how to survive January without going down a diet/reset culture hole. Today we discuss some issues with the polarizing anti-diet messaging on social media, and how the journey of healing our relationship with food can have a necessary pendulum swing.

Dr. Alise Parrish, a Doctor of physical therapy and founder of Ally Wellness, joins Dana for today's episode. Alise's mission is to help folks feel good in their bodies. They provide sliding-scale Physical Therapy, Personal Training, and Wellness services in a safe and affirming environment. On today's episode Alise and Dana (me) are discussing the problems of the 'traditional' PT environment, and how it alienates and disproportionately affects people in marginalized bodies. We're also addressing the #1 thing most people have heard when they go to PT - "you need to lose weight to fix the pain" - how this is inaccurate in evidence-based practice, how this doesn't actually help clients manage their pain (even if they do lose weight), and what we can do instead by treating the body you're currently in.

Dana and Cristina discuss how they interpret "non-diet" in a Whole-Hearted Eating way, versus how the term is being co-opted by weight loss focused practitioners taking advantage of peoples' vulnerabilities. What is non-diet, really? What's a wolf in sheep's clothing? And what's the big deal about this anyway? Let's get into it.

Dana and Cristina chat about how sometimes, in order to repair your relationship with food or exercise, you need to repair your relationship with stress. We commonly think we have to control or remove our stress to 'manage' it, and when we feel like we can't control it, a lot of people turn to food and/or exercise. This is when your relationship with food and body image can be a red herring that become their own deeper problems! Food for thought: Are the things you're using to complete your stress cycle actually depleting you?

There's a reason no one complains about binge eating arugula. In this episode, Cristina and Dana dive into binge eating and the holidays. We discuss how the beliefs we carry about certain foods and what we think those foods say about us lead to binging behaviors (and full blown binge episodes!). With the holidays fast approaching, we know this is on everyone's mind. We get real practical about why we feel binge-y about certain foods and what you can do in preparation for those tricky holiday meals
