Story Transcript:

En: The winter wind blew fiercely around the abandoned hospital.

En: The broken windows let in the snow that had accumulated in the corridors and waiting rooms.

En: Lucía and Manuel walked in silence, alert, each holding a flashlight.

En: Lucía, with a furrowed brow and pursed lips, thought of her mother.

Es: Ella necesitaba antibióticos.
En: She needed antibiotics.

En: She had a high fever and the risk of a growing infection.

En: Manuel, who followed her, kept his eyes on the surroundings.

En: He knew danger lurked around every corner.

En: “The most dangerous part is over there,” said Manuel, pointing with the flashlight toward the west wing of the hospital.

En: “They say it's full of looters.” Lucía nodded, feeling the weight of her decision.

Es: “Pero no tenemos opción, Manuel.
En: “But we have no choice, Manuel.

En: We have to try.” They both advanced, their footsteps echoing on the tile floor.

En: As they went further in, the cold became more intense.

En: Lucía's breath condensed into small white clouds in front of her face.

En: There were no signs of life here, only the echo of the wind and occasionally, the menacing creak of the building.

En: Suddenly, they heard a voice in the distance.

En: They stopped, sharing a look of concern.

Es: “No estamos solos”, susurró Manuel.
En: “We’re not alone,” whispered Manuel.

En: Quickly, they turned off their flashlights and approached a slightly open door.

En: Inside, several figures moved among the shadows, searching through drawers and shelves.

En: Lucía took a deep breath and stepped forward, letting the pale light illuminate her presence.

Es: “¡Alto!”, exclamó con voz firme.
En: “Stop!” she exclaimed with a firm voice.

En: The figures turned, their faces covered with scarves and hats.

En: One, apparently the leader, raised his hand, signaling them to stop.

Es: “¿Qué buscan aquí?”, preguntó.
En: “What are you looking for here?” he asked.

En: “We're looking for medicine,” said Lucía straightforwardly, maintaining eye contact.

Es: “Mi madre está enferma.” Un silencio incómodo siguió.
En: “My mother is sick.” An uncomfortable silence followed.

En: The leader of the looters calculated his response, then gestured to one of his companions.

En: This one disappeared momentarily before returning with a small metal box in hand.

En: “We have what you need,” said the leader.

En: “But nothing is free.” Lucía hesitated only for a moment before responding.

Es: “Podemos intercambiar.
En: “We can trade.

En: We have some food and warm clothing.” After a few seconds of silence, the leader nodded.

Es: “Está bien.
En: “Alright.

Es: Pero sean rápidos.” Con el acuerdo establecido, intercambiaron rápidamente.
En: But be quick.” With the deal established, they exchanged quickly.

En: The tension seemed to dissolve, though it remained latent.

En: Lucía and Manuel retreated with the medicine, returning through the icy path, now concerned about navigating the hospital's traps.

Es: Al salir, Lucía miró a Manuel.
En: As they exited, Lucía looked at Manuel.

En: “Sometimes, we have to do whatever is necessary to survive.

En: And that means learning to work with others,” she said seriously.

Es: Manuel sonrió, orgulloso de su amiga.
En: Manuel smiled, proud of his friend.

En: As they walked away under the gray sky, Lucía understood the importance of community and the strength that comes from alliances.

En: In a broken world, moving forward together was the only real hope.
