In today's meditation we are grounding the Sacral or Svadisthana Chakra. I ask you to lie back in Supta Baddha Konasana or reclined Butterfly pose with support under the outer thighs and hips, so that you are truly comfortable for the meditation. Grounding work through each of the chakras is vital, especially for the lower, "earthly" chakras, and in this mediation we visualise or feel into a whirlpool of energetic water, the vortex of it's tail connecting deep into the Earth and the energy of Mother Earth.

In this episode we are continuing with the theme of Greek philosophies of love and today we will look at Philautia which is self-love. Philautia is self-compassion and as Aristotle put it “All friendly feelings for others are an extension of a man’s feelings for himself.” or as RuPaul says "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love somebody else?". Love that quote!

There are 8 (but probably more because I haven't yet found the word for love of chocolate or music) types of love that I define for you here, they are...

• Agape - we have already looked at this - it is a compassionate, kind love
• Eros - erotic, passionate love
• Philia - a platonic love that we have for our friends, full of loyalty and trust
• Storge - the love we have for family
• Ludus - a playful, giddy, young-love type of love
• Mania - obsessive, possessive, jealous love - not the healthiest type of love
• Pragma - enduring love of deep and harmonious affection and trust - a love that has been built over time with compromise and patience.
• Philautia - self-love

The work of self-love is ongoing - every day our ego will fight it, telling us that we are not worthy. But we are! You are.

Every so often I get a really good question from a listener and this one was a doozy! The question was this - Why do we always want to "win" and compare ourselves to others? What are we really doing? How can we evaluate or recognise our achievements and actually feel good about them, instead of feeling like we still have not done enough? - This one resonates so strongly and I'm so grateful to the listener for this question. I hope that I have done it justice!

When we compare ourselves to others we are putting ourselves in a place of "less than" but only on the basis of social comparison. Deep down we are all human with the same flaws, emotions, needs and desires - just all jumbled up a little differently. This requires us to work on compassion - for others and most importantly for ourselves. The only person who is living your life experience is yourself. No one else had your upbringing (not even your siblings!), or your experiences, no one else has your unique combination of talents, fears, insecurities, and strengths! So the only person with whom you can really compare yourself with is you! The you of last month or last year - this is where we start to see our growth, to see where we have achieved things that past us might have been too afraid to do. The fact that you listen to this podcast is enough to let you know that you are seeking a better, stronger, more evolved and peaceful version of yourself! You are enough.

Sometimes we just need a simple breathing mediation and today is that day! Life can challenge us and it is useful to remember that the point of all this (life, that is!) is to simply be in each moment, to grow, to love and seek ourselves. This simple breath, which I adore, connects us to the energies of both the Cosmos and the Earth. I hope that it allows you to connect with yourself as well as the energies that surround and nurture us on a daily basis.

The very exciting announcement that I will be running a yoga retreat in Morocco in November is also flagged in this episode! We will be in the most serene and beautiful location in Morocco for 5 nights from 9th-14th November and whilst we will be having a yoga class where we connect with our chakras every morning, and a restorative session in the evening, we will also be able to lounge by the vast pool, walk in the surrounding countryside and explore Marrakech and all it has to offer. Agape was a Greek Goddess of Love and the concept of her type of love has been used frequently to explain the type of love that God has for us and that we have for God. Today I am bringing Agape into a broader context of feeling connection, compassion and kindness to everyone who crosses our path. It is a tough time of year (especially in the cold, dark winter months for the Northern Hemisphere!) and when we go inside ourselves with our struggles we are isolating ourselves from the connections that will nurture and support us. When we get caught up in our own narratives we feel as though we are the only ones feeling like this - but we are a collective consciousness, we are not singular! That is a trick of the ego! In finding connection, in extending kindness and compassion with others we feel more whole within ourselves. So, the idea of Agape is one that is fundamental to our own sense of peace and happiness.
