The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
We haven’t had one of these in a while but this week we’re back with an on the couch episode with Malcolm and Marie. Malcolm and Marie is of course the new movie on Netflix featuring Zendaya and John David Washington. Joining me to break down all of the many layers you can find in the film is Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Ayanna Abrams. Dr. Abrams and I chatted about the dynamics present between Malcolm & Marie, things we noticed while watching the movie, what it might look like for Malcolm & Marie to go to couples therapy after the evening in the film, and the kinds of things she might discuss with Marie if she came to therapy individually. This episode does contain spoilers.

We know that the world has been quite unpredictable and anxiety provoking for many of us as adults, but the kids in our lives are experiencing this as well. Joining us to shed some light on how to talk with kids about the things that have been happening and how to best support them is Licensed Psychologist Dr. Erlanger "Earl" Turner. Dr. Earl and I chatted about how to start difficult conversations with kids, the impact of such an uprooted routine and things to consider post pandemic, how to recognize if the kids in your life need additional support, and some of his favorite coping strategies to teach kids.

Like many of you I’ve been spending a considerable amount of time watching all of the shows and thought it would be fun to have a little recap of what’s been happening on a couple of my favorites and dig into some of the themes that have popped up. Joining me today to chat about the most recent episodes of This Is Us and Married at First Sight is Beverley Andre, LMFT. Related to This Is Us, Beverley and I chatted about the power of the stories we hold onto in our lives, the impact of grief as shown in the episode, the symbolism of water, and the importance of having nonjudgmental safe spaces like the ones that often exist with our aunties. We also chatted about the newest season of Married at First Sight. We discussed some of our thoughts about the compatibility and readiness of some of the couples, what you might want to think about before choosing to apply for this type of show, our thoughts about what indicates success for the couples, and of course some of the red flags that already seem to be popping up this season. This conversation does include spoilers for both shows!

Like many things this past year, the experience of dating has looked a lot different and there are many more things to consider. To help us dig a little deeper into the current dating landscape, today we’re joined by Tennesha Wood, who is a dating coach, matchmaker, and founder of The Broom List; the first and only matchmaking firm dedicated to pairing marriage-minded Black professionals. Tennesha and I chatted about how dating has changed during the pandemic, what her work looks like as a matchmaker, suggestions for making your online dating profiles pop, and how to have honest conversations about your relationship expectations.

It's Inauguration Day here in the US and I'm feeling a mix of excitement that the current administration is finally ending and also anxiety about the safety of the day's events. The grief related to the many lives we've lost over the past year also seems to be heavier and heavier each day. If you're feeling similarly, you're not alone. When times are difficult, it's even more important for us to dig deep into taking care of ourselves. In today's episode I'm sharing 8 tips that might help today and in the days ahead and also answering a couple of On the Porch questions.

One of the qualities I most appreciate about people who regularly practice mindfulness is the ability to cultivate inner calm despite what is happening on the outside and I think this is definitely something many of us can use more of right now. To help us learn more about mindfulness practices, today we are joined by Wellness educator, Meditation teacher, Reiki Healer, and Author Devi Brown. Devi also serves as the Chief Impact Officer for Chopra Global and is the voice of daily inspiration on the Chopra App.
Devi and I chatted about the wellness practices she incorporates into her life, how to get started with using crystals and primordial sound meditation, the importance of affirmations and she shared a beautiful guided affirmation that can be experienced over and over to help keep you grounded.

As many of us are thinking about what 2021 will be like and the intentions we might have for the year, I thought it would be great to have a conversation about astrology and what we might learn about ourselves based on astrology. For this conversation, I was joined by New York City-based astrologer, Mecca Woods. Mecca and I chatted about what astrology is, how to find and use our birth chart, how astrology can be used in personal development, what we might expect for 2021, and of course she shared all of her favorite resources for anyone who may want to learn more.

You’ve likely been following the news related to the recently developed COVID-19 vaccines and if you’re like me, you’ve got lots of questions. I recently had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Boghuma Kabisen Titanji who is an infectious disease physician and clinical researcher pursuing a fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine here in Atlanta, Georgia. During our conversation, Dr. Titanji shared how this vaccine is different than others we may have taken, how the vaccine was able to be developed so quickly, and what we might expect after taking the vaccination.
