If you’re looking for a mood boost in this season then I’ve got just the movie for you to check out, Netflix’s Jingle Jangle. Beyond the magic, I feel like there were several life lessons to be gained from the film and Jordan Madison, LCMFT joins me to chat all about it. We discussed the themes present in the movie, why a film like this was so necessary right now, and the importance of staying connected to our sense of play and wonder as adults. This episode does contain spoilers so please save it until after you’ve had a chance to watch the movie.

In session 132 we spoke with Dr. Jessica D. Moorman about reimagining what it means to be single and several community members requested that she return to talk about what singleness means during the pandemic. So she's back! This time we chatted about about the new layers of being single that have been illuminated by the pandemic, how community care is more critical now than ever, how she’s been creative in getting her social needs met, and policy changes we should consider to make the country more supportive for single women.

One of the most common questions we get from the community is why can’t I find a therapist who takes my insurance. There typically isn’t a quick or easy answer to that question so we wanted to cover as many of the details as possible here. Joining us for this conversation is Dr. Cara McNulty, President of Behavioral Health & EAP, Aetna and Dr. Ajita Robinson, Grief Expert & CEO of Mastering Insurance.
Dr. McNulty shared great insights about what kinds of services are offered with insurance plans, how to find the plan that might be the best fit for you, and she shared more about the services Aetna offers to assist the with mental health needs. Dr. Robinson shared some of the reasons therapists might not accept insurance, what is involved with using your insurance for therapy, and resources you can use if you don’t currently have insurance.

As the days get shorter and the wind gets colder, you might be moving a little slower and feeling a little less motivated. And given the multiple stressors we’ve experienced this year, that’s not at all a surprise. Today we’re joined by Dr. Allycin Powell-Hicks to talk about seasonal affective disorder and how that might be heightening depressive symptoms you might have experienced in the past. Dr. Ally and I discussed tips for managing depressive symptoms, how we can tell if symptoms are something we should be concerned about, how to support ourselves in this very different holiday season, and some of the relationship challenges that have arisen during the pandemic and how to manage them.

Today we’re digging into the topic of consensual non-monogamy. While monogamous relationships may be the relationship types we hear about most often, they’re not the only relationships types that exist. To break it all down for us, I was joined by Ruby B. Johnson, LCSW, LCDC. Ruby and I discussed some of the most common misconceptions about consensual non-monogamy, how to determine whether a polyamorous relationship is a good fit for you, some considerations in a polyamorous relationship, how to unpack some of the stigma related to consensual non-monogamy, and of course she shares some of her favorite resources.

Whew! This has been a week. There is lots to unpack following last week's Presidential election so I invited two of my friends and colleagues to join me for the discussion. This week I am joined by Dr. Joy D. Beckwith and Dr. Ayanna Abrams, both Psychologists in Atlanta, GA. We chatted about how we’re feeling post-election, how many of the feelings we’re experiencing are the result of the trauma we’ve endured at the hands of our government, these ideas around Black women saving the world, and we discussed the power of representation and what it means to have VP-Elect Kamala Harris preparing to take office.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been spending much of your time watching or re-watching some of your favorite shows from the past like Girlfriends, Living Single, or One on One. But did you know that there’s a very good reason why so many of us are turning to old favorites right now to help soothe ourselves? Joining us again this week to dig into why, is Dr. Alicia Little Hodge. She and I chatted about how nostalgia works to calm anxiety, how anxiety looks different since the pandemic, and she offers her perspective on managing our anxiety around the election season.
