Story Transcript:

En: Lars was the man, and Copenhagen was the place.

En: This straightforward and hardworking guy was from Sweden but now lived in this wonderful city filled with colorful houses and winding streets.

En: Here he would encounter one of the most feared things, the Danish language.

Da: Dagens udfordring?
En: The challenge of the day?

Da: Ordstammen “Rødgrød med fløde”.
En: The phrase "Rødgrød med fløde" (red berry pudding with cream).

En: "It looks easy," Lars thought as he looked down at his dessert plate.

En: But he knew it was far from easy.

Da: "Rød-grød-med-fløde", sagde han stille for sig selv.
En: "Rødgrød med fløde," he said quietly to himself.

Da: Men det lød mere som "Råw-groo-mit-floo".
En: But it sounded more like "Råw-groo-mit-floo."

Da: Han sukkede dybt.
En: He sighed deeply.

Da: Hele cafeen, Smag for Sag, kiggede på ham.
En: The entire cafe, Smag for Sag, looked at him.

En: He felt his cheeks getting warm, and his mouth went as dry as sand.

Da: Men han ville ikke give op.
En: But he wouldn't give up.

Da: Han havde allerede overvundet forhindringer større end dette.
En: He had already overcome obstacles bigger than this.

En: So with a determined gaze, he stared down at the bowl of delicious red berry pudding with cream.

En: He took a deep breath and tried again.

Da: "Rød-grød-med-floo-de", lød stemmen forsigtigt.
En: "Rødgrød med fløde," his voice said softly.

Da: Alle i caféen klappede og grinte.
En: Everyone in the cafe clapped and laughed.

Da: Nogle filmede ham.
En: Some filmed him.

Da: Men Lars smilte bredt.
En: But Lars smiled widely.

Da: Dagene gik, og Lars øvede.
En: Days went by, and Lars practiced.

En: He walked the streets, the parks, the cafes, and went into the shops, saying the same thing over and over: "Rødgrød med fløde."

En: People laughed or clapped, but he persisted.

En: He could feel himself getting better and better.

Da: Hans stædighed begyndte at betale sig.
En: His stubbornness started to pay off.

Da: Og så kom dagen.
En: And then the day came.

En: Lars sat in Copenhagen City Hall on a chair across from the city's mayor.

En: "Do it, Lars," the mayor said, patting him on the back.

En: With the entire city's citizens watching, Lars took a deep breath.

En: "Rødgrød med fløde," he said so clearly and distinctly that everyone in the hall could hear.

Da: Der lød et øjeblik af stilhed.
En: There was a moment of silence.

Da: Så brød jublen løs.
En: Then the cheering erupted.

Da: Lars havde gjort det!
En: Lars had done it!

En: He had finally pronounced the feared Danish words correctly.

Da: Han smilede bredt og trak vejret frit.
En: He smiled widely and breathed freely.

En: Finally, he felt at home in Copenhagen.

En: He was ready to face more challenges in this new city he loved.

En: And that is how this sunny story about Lars and his battle with the Danish language ends.

Da: Han lærte, at nogle gange skal man bare ignorere hånende latter og modige udfordringer.
En: He learned that sometimes you just have to ignore mocking laughter and brave challenges.

En: Because it is through these difficulties that we grow and become stronger.
