Story Transcript:

En: In Copenhagen, in a small café by the lakes, Sofie, Lars, and Signe are sitting together.

En: They are all from different countries and met in a Danish language course.

En: On the quirky little café table in front of them is a pink bowl filled with raspberry pudding with cream.

Da: Sofie, fra Tyskland, var først.
En: Sofie, from Germany, goes first.

En: "Rødgrød med fløde," she tries and makes the others laugh.

En: She rolls her eyes but can't help but laugh along.

Da: Så, er det Lars' tur.
En: Next is Lars.

En: He is from Sweden and thinks it will be easy for him to say.

En: "Rødgrød med flöde," he says, and Signe shakes her head and laughs.

En: We're not in Sweden, Lars," she laughs.

En: Lars laughs too, although he feels a bit embarrassed.

En: Signe, from England, goes last.

Da: Hun har tænkt meget over det.
En: She has thought a lot about it.

Da: Hun har øvet sig hele ugen.
En: She has practiced all week.

Da: "Rødgrød med flothe," siger hun.
En: "Rødgrød med flothe," she says.

Da: Sofie og Lars griner højt.
En: Sofie and Lars laugh loudly.

Da: Signe rødmer, men griner også.
En: Signe blushes but laughs too.

Da: De prøver igen, igen og igen.
En: They try again, and again, and again.

En: People around them laugh with them, and even the waiter at the café can't help but laugh.

En: Finally, Sofie says, "Let's try one more time together."

En: They all nod, and on three, they take a deep breath and say, "Rødgrød med fløde."

En: It's not perfect, but it's the closest they've come, and everyone applauds around them.

En: They laugh, they cheer, and they high-five each other.

En: Even though they can't say "rødgrød med fløde" perfectly, they now know they have two great friends they can laugh with.

En: And that is more valuable to them than being able to pronounce the Danish phrase perfectly.

En: They eat their raspberry pudding with cream and laugh all the way through.

En: It's a good day in Copenhagen, a day they will remember for a long time - the day they tried to say "rødgrød med fløde."

En: And even though they didn't say it perfectly, it was perfect enough for them.
