    • Men are created differently. I feel like they can handle less than we can. I think women have a lot more words than men do.
    • There's a whole aspect of the role model that Taylor Swift is being for women. There's a whole idea of the role model that the dads, Brads, and Chads, as she calls them, are for their daughters.
    • There's a whole different, you know emotional response and biological response and you when you're sharing with your the women in your life too right so that's just going to bring just more richness and fullness to to your relationship at the same time so I love it."

    Notable Quotes
    • Keeping secrets will make you sick, and they always come to light in the end.
    • As women, we're often told to be quiet. Don't share your story. Don't talk about the things we go through. It's making women sick, sad, and suicidal.
    • I just really love helping women find a space not to feel crappy all of the time, or a lot of the time, or to sort of unhook some of those longstanding, challenging relationships or ways of doing business and say like, hey, there's this other way.
    • Learning how to sort of unhook from this constant societal pressure women have to get approval at every turn and that, you know, somebody else's behavior means something about the state of your value or your worth, right, is just so important.
    • Learning to unhook from this constant societal pressure, women have to get approval at every turn, and that somebody else's behavior means something about the state of your value or worth is so important.
    • You have to kind of, you know, work your way up. Take a couple of detours. Neutralize. Yeah, things take a little bit to get to the other side. Yeah, I'm not living in that negativity all the time.
    • If I could change one thing for women, it would be the very thing that you said, which is our default thinking is always what's wrong with me. There's something wrong with me. I'm like, there's nothing wrong with you.

After all, what are we without our health, vitality, and vibrance? She is a high-energy public speaker who empowers women with business, life and wellness skills. Tracey knows what it is like to be in a narcissistic, abusive relationship with two small kids. She details the emotional manipulation she endured, her struggles with emotional binge eating as a coping mechanism, and her eventual realization of the need for healthier means of dealing with the situation. Tracy underscores the vital role of surrounding oneself with positivity, such as uplifting music and empowering literature, in countering the negativity imposed by an abusive partner. [01:03:21] Why it is essential to feed your mind

    Notable Quotes
    • Feeding what's on the end of your fork is essential, but what you're feeding your mind is so if someone gets you upset every day on social, It's okay.
    • I would encourage everyone to speak the truth about yourself. Not when somebody is trying to feed you to believe. No. No, this is their illness, their sickness.
    • I believe in and just become that well-being. Like I said, what's on the end of your fork but what you're feeding your mind and combining the two, right? Because we are so resilient. And I just want to be able to help so many women with that. So that is you, and you're listening, and you're hearing that please one, there's nothing wrong with you. Right? I want to say that. I understand, and there are ways you can reach me. I call them scooches.
    • I felt like I had this out-of-body experience where I was screaming at the top of my lungs. Like in this match that is so out of character for me, and if I had this out-of-body experience, and I could look down on this, and I was mirroring him and his behavior, everything that I disliked.
    • Truth prevails. Truth prevails. Yeah. People are coming to me almost a year to the day. This is a bullshit saying, Oh my gosh, Tracy. Last year, we thought all this because he said, and I remember saying, you got to stand in your power. Wow. The truth will prevail. So I will say to anybody out there, it's harder than heck. What I just said, it is done. So please hear me.
    • What is on the end of your fork is important to your health and well-being on a cellular level, but what you feed your mind is more important than what you're listening to, reading, and watching. And I, again, this was on TV. We didn't have laptops to watch or whatever.

    Notable Quotes
    • I believe our intuition is God's voice telling and guiding us on what to do. I've been tuning into my intuition more lately, and its practice makes perfect. Yes. The more you practice, the better you get at it. So yeah.
    • I binged for about seven years. Then I noticed that I was developing dependence and what happens, and this is how you kind of know that you have AUD. If you feel like you've been hijacked by the substance, like if you kind of wake up in the morning and you're thinking about drinking, when are you gonna have a drink? And what are you going to drink today? And how are you going to make the drink.
    • It takes a few months. It's not a quick fix or instant kind of thing, but if you give it the time that it needs, you stay committed to taking that medication. So that's the critical part. Complete 100% compliance to taking that medication before you're going to drink. Okay, right now or before you're going to drink. And if you do that over time, you will heal the brain.
    • Almost everyone knows either a family member, a loved one, a close friend, or a friend who is struggling with alcohol. Almost everybody that I talk to has somebody in their life. So this isn't every family problem. And it's getting worse. So, the number of people with alcohol use disorder after COVID is 28 million that were reported in a year. So, 28 million were reported in a year. I think it was 2021 when they did the last report. And the number before COVID was 14 million people with AUD adults with AUD in the country. And now it's 28 million. So I'll let you figure out what the difference in the number.

    Notable Quotes
    • I had no idea what my life looked like. But I knew what I wanted. I wanted the picket fence, the perfect home, the perfect husband, the perfect family.
    • My faith was never stronger than when I was going through this. It was never me to do so. Close to God, and I don't even say close like I pray for this now, and it's funny because I mean, I was so dependent, just for every breath I took just to be able to function, just to be able to whatever. And I mean, my longing and my desire for God in my life at that time, because otherwise I was gonna die.
    • I just needed to be anonymous. I just wanted to go somewhere where nobody knew me. Nobody knew my history. Nobody knew anything about your story. And yeah, and I didn't have to hear about the sightings and the gossip and or even witness it, you know, just the stuff I was dealing with all the time. I was like, I just don't want this anymore.
    • I wanted to fight for my marriage, but there was always this part of me that knew there was no going back.
    • I just felt like I needed a clean slate. Yeah, I had already left my church. We talked about that, that I just, um, and I love my church dearly. And I am so grateful for all the support I had, how wonderful everyone was, and how they rallied around me.
    • You know, here's what's funny, though, Laura, I said, Now I can be myself again. I can, you know, be the true authentic self that I hid under a bushel for all these years. Yeah. But you know what? She's never come back. She's not coming back. She's gone.

  • Breaking the Silence: Understanding Secondary Gaslighting After Narcissistic Abuse

In this episode, Laura opens up about her journey of healing after leaving an abusive marriage with a narcissist. Tackling the topic of secondary gaslighting, Laura shares her experiences of not being believed when trying to disclose the abuse to friends and family. She explores the challenges survivors face, including the trauma bond and the incremental nature of narcissistic abuse. Laura emphasizes the importance of understanding complex PTSD and seeking professional help from those trained in the field.

Join Laura as she encourages women to speak up, share their stories, and support each other on the healing journey!

    Timestamps

[01:06] What Laura has been experiencing since leaving her marriage

    [02:26] What secondary gaslighting entails

[02:54] How secondary gaslighting comes about

[03:43] How someone finds themselves in the trauma bond

[04:45] What helped Laura with her moving forward and her healing

[06:30] Why The National Domestic Violence Hotline advises against couples therapy

[07:50] How some professionals may gaslight you

[08:35] Two things Laura considered at the end of her marriage

    Notable Quotes
    • Secondary gaslighting is when victims of narcissistic abuse try to tell family or friends what happened, and then they're not believed. They can say things like, I know them, they would never do anything like that. Are you sure that's what happened to you? Now, do you believe that's what happened? Or is that just your perception? Another thing that can happen is secondary gaslighting is treating victims like it was just a bad marriage, a bad match, or a bad breakup.
    • The thing about narcissistic abuse is that it is so incremental that you hardly even know it's happening. The abuse is so minimal. Well, it's not minimal, but the abuse is so incremental that it is just almost not known. And then when people don't believe you, it's hard to explain. Then you get into the trauma bond.
    • All abusers have issues with their sense of entitlement, their need for control, and their stunning lack of empathy. Rather than focusing on the victim, it's time for society to wake up to the abusive nature of their perpetrators.

    Notable Quotes
    • I make some really poor choices. Absolutely. But, you know, I've grown from all of those experiences and have learned in my life that those choices that I've made don't define me but that I can grow from them.
    • You know, everything has a time. There's no right or wrong to that, Laura. Some women might say, Hey, it took me 40, 50 years, 60 years before I realized what I was in, and it would no longer work for me. I just don't think that there's a wrong or right. I just feel that we reached that point in our lives.
    • It's important to keep that space safe when somebody's being vulnerable with you or sharing a part of what is in them.
    • Life is a journey of constantly learning and growing. You know, we, we, uh, so I'm always ready to learn, and I'm never at that point of perfection, you know, but just always striving to, to learn more and to look at things differently and, and to adventure into new arenas and step outside my comfort zone.
    • Life isn't just one journey; you can reinvent yourself, and that's a thing that happens. If you don't like what's happening, change the narrative.
