I define emotional eating as eating when you are not physically hungry that's getting in the way of your life.
Emotional eating is when you leave your physical body and use food to numb out, procrastinate, or any number of emotional soothers.
Emotionally turning to food once in a while is normal - it's when you find yourself turning to food and it's negatively impacting your life, your relationships, your ability to stop eating at meals, and of course, your weight. When you feel like you have to sneak eat or hide what you're eating from your loved ones. This is where emotional eating goes from "normal" to problematic - and we emotional eaters need an entirely different strategy to lose weight.
Emotional eaters tend to struggle with diets because -
- We get triggered to turn to food very easily.
- We hate feeling controlled by the rules of diets because we crave freedom, choice, and options.
- We despise being told what and how to do things - which include what and how to eat.
- We get bored very easily so we're always looking for the next solution because it's easier than facing ourselves and our relationship with food.
