What to do when an Emotional Abuser comes back into your life and tries to reconnect. I share a personal story, how I was stuck in flight or fight and how I could use all the healing and personal work I did for months to help me in that moment.

How do you communicate with a Narcissist? Most of the time, using communication tools (that are all the rage on Instagram) will not help you with communicating with a difficult partner.

No matter what stage of leaving an emotionally abusive relationship you are in, you will need to learn how to put your oxygen mask on, and doing that starts with no longer living to expectations set by others or society. This episode talks about how to start to be there for yourself.

The Cycle of Abuse in a Domestic Partnership is important to understand if you are in an abusive relationship.
The simplest way I’ve seen the cycle described is this: the person gets hurt, the abuser gets away with it, and they both claim the victim is the crazy one.
On this episode, I will talk through the 4 stages and how you can understand them.

An apology from an abuser never feels like a true apology - and you shouldn’t accept it.
A real apology is remorse followed by silence, space and changed behavior. A real apology is less speaking and more personal work on yourself. A real apology is looking within and addressing what caused you to hurt someone you love.
Have you ever noticed how some apologies make you feel worse after getting them? You thought you were getting the apology you so longed to have; but you got an excuse and a justification?
Often in abusive relationships, we see abusive partners apologizing with little to no willingness to make changes towards nurturing a healthy relationship, or behaving differently in the future. On todays episode, we unpack an abusers apology and how to know if someone is actually sorry.

Most people don't know how to build up their own self worth. I've had my own battles with self love, self worth, self esteem and self care. I certainly didn't resented all of the words associated with it. When I was healing, all I knew is that I wanted to be able to trust myself.
When I work with clients on this, I always come from a place small steps. I don't use the words "self love." I don't tell them they need to love themselves to move forward. I tell them I want to help them feel proud of themselves.

Gaslighting is incredibly painful and it's an actual form of psychological manipulation that affects your memory, your perception, your sanity, and your reality.
To Gaslight someone is to basically plant seeds of doubt in their mind to make them question their own sense of truth and reality, like memory or sense of judgement, and their perceptions and their feelings.
So my hope is that this podcast simplifies the concept of gaslighting to something that you can digest, because a lot of people talk about gaslighting, but not a lot of people talk about exactly how it feels and how it shows up. I also hope it helps you un-gaslight yourself.

You know something is wrong. You just can’t always explain what it is.
Why do you keep apologizing when you didn’t do anything wrong? Why can one nice interaction make you question…
You Are Not Crazy is a podcast about making sense of the relationship experiences that don’t make sense.
I’m Jessica Knight, an emotional abuse coach and survivor. I take the confusing, contradictory, often ordinary-looking moments inside emotional abuse, coercive control, trauma bonds, narcissistic relationships, and high-conflict separation and slow them down so we can understand what is actually happening.
We look beyond labels and individual incidents to the patterns underneath them: what a behavior does, what it gets you to do in response, what happens when you resist it, and what you eventually learn to believe about yourself.
Because emotional abuse doesn’t only hurt. It can change the way you communicate, make decisions, respond to conflict, interpret other people’s behavior, and trust your own perception.
Here, we talk about gaslighting, manipulation, trauma bonding, intermittent reinforcement, coercive control, high-conflict divorce, post-separation abuse, difficult co-parenting dynamics, and the process of rebuilding self-trust after a relationship that taught you to doubt yourself.
But this isn’t a podcast about diagnosing every difficult person or telling you that every conflict is abuse. It’s about understanding the pattern.
What happened? What did it make you do? Why did your response make sense at the time? And what changes once you can finally see the mechanism underneath it?
You are not crazy. There is an explanation.
Let’s find it.
