Story Transcript:

El: Όταν ο Γιάννης πάτησε το πόδι του στην ταβέρνα, ήταν σαν να μπαίνει σε έναν άλλο κόσμο. Οι γρατζουνιές στο ανοιχτοχρώμιο των τραπεζιών, ο θόρυβος των πιατιών και της κουτάλας, η μυρωδιά του σουβλακιού, το γέλιο των Ελλήνων που έπιναν ούζο.. ξαφνικά, ήταν στην χώρα των προγόνων του.
En: When Giannis set foot in the taverna, it was like entering a different world. The scratches on the light-colored tables, the noise of plates and spoons, the smell of souvlaki, the laughter of the Greeks drinking ouzo... suddenly, he was in his ancestors' country.

El: Στο ένα τέλος του τραπεζιού, η ηλικιωμένη γιαγιά του έκανε το σταυρό της πριν δαγκώσει το πρώτο εμποράκι της. Η γιαγιά του μιλούσε μόνο ελληνικά. Ο Γιάννης, παρ'ολο που γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στην Αμερική, ήταν αποφασισμένος να επικοινωνήσει με την γιαγιά του αυτό το βράδυ.
En: At one end of the table, his elderly grandmother crossed herself before taking her first bite. His grandmother only spoke Greek. Giannis, although born and raised in America, was determined to communicate with his grandmother that evening.

El: Αρχικά προσπάθησε με κάποιες απλές λέξεις "γεια σας", "είμαι καλά". Η γιαγιά τον κοίταζε σαστισμένη. Είχε αποτύχει. Κοίταξε την Μαρία, την ελληνιδα σύζυγό του, που γύρω από το τραπέζι διασκέδαζε με τον Κώστα, τον αδερφό του Γιάννη.
En: Initially, he tried with some simple words like "hello," "I'm fine." His grandmother looked at him astonished. He had failed. He looked at Maria, his Greek wife, who was having fun around the table with Kostas, Giannis' brother.

El: Στη συνέχεια, προσπάθησε να εκφράσει τα αισθήματά του για τη γιαγιά του με ένα παλιό λαϊκό τραγούδι που είχε μάθει. "Σ αγαπώ", της είπε, "γιαγιά μου."Αν και δεν ήταν τέλειο, η χαρά που λάμπει στα μάτια της γιαγιάς του, ήταν αρκετή. Εκείνη την νύχτα, η οικογένεια ενωμένη, τραγούδησε και γέλασε στην ζεστή αγκαλιά της ταβέρνας.
En: Then, he tried to express his feelings for his grandmother through an old folk song he had learned. "I love you," he said to her, "my grandmother." Although not perfect, the joy shining in his grandmother's eyes was enough. That night, the united family sang and laughed in the warm embrace of the taverna.

El: Ο Γιάννης κατάλαβε ότι οι λέξεις δεν είναι πάντα το πιο σημαντικό. Οι πράξεις, η προθυμία να μάθει, σημαίνουν περισσότερο. Είχε βρει έναν τρόπο να επικοινωνήσει με τη γιαγιά του, μέσα από την αγάπη και τη μαθησιακή ευημερία, παρά τη διαφορετική γλώσσα.
En: Giannis realized that words are not always the most important thing. Actions, the willingness to learn, mean more. He had found a way to communicate with his grandmother through love and intellectual well-being, despite the different language.
