He: השמש זרחה בעוצמה על הקיבוץ שבמעמקי מדבר הנגב.
En: The sun shone intensely on the kibbutz deep in the Negev Desert.
He: לאה הביטה החוצה מהחלון לעבר הדיונות הרחבות.
En: Leah looked out the window at the vast dunes.
He: אביה תמיד אמר לה שצריך לראות את היופי שבמדבר, למרות שהאדמה כה צחיחה.
En: Her father always told her that one must see the beauty in the desert, even though the land is so barren.
He: כשהייתה ילדה, היה מספר לה סיפורי טבע על פרחים וירק ועל חלומו לשתול גן במדבר.
En: When she was a child, he would tell her nature stories about flowers and greenery and his dream to plant a garden in the desert.
He: אך עכשיו אביה איננו, ולאה הרגישה חובה למלא את צוואתו.
En: But now her father was gone, and Leah felt a duty to fulfill his will.
He: החורף היה בעיצומו, והקיבוץ התכונן לחג ט"ו בשבט.
En: Winter was at its peak, and the kibbutz was preparing for the holiday of Tu Bishvat.

En: "This is the time to celebrate nature," Leah thought, "but how can one celebrate here in the black and dry desert?"

En: "I will be by your side," said Eliyahu, "if you want help."
He: מריים, חברתם של אביה ושל אליהו, הציעה לתת לה כמה זרעים מיוחדים שחבר הביא לה מחו"ל.
En: Miriam, a friend of her father and Eliyahu, offered to give her some special seeds that a friend had brought her from abroad.
He: יום אחד, כשישבה על הספסל מול הנוף השקט, היא הרהרה בדרכים חדשות לטפח את האדמה הקשה.
En: One day, as she sat on the bench facing the quiet landscape, she contemplated new ways to cultivate the harsh soil.
He: לפתע חל גשם נדיר, כאילו העננים שמעו את תפילותיה.
En: Suddenly, a rare rain fell, as if the clouds had heard her prayers.
He: לאה לא היססה וקראה לאליהו ומריים: "הגיע הזמן! נשתול עכשיו!"
En: Leah did not hesitate and called to Eliyahu and Miriam, "The time has come! Let’s plant now!"
He: באמצע הלילה, עם פנסים בידיהם, הם עבדו יחד.
En: In the middle of the night, with flashlights in their hands, they worked together.
He: ידם נאבקות עם האדמה אך חדורות אמונה ובהירות מטרתם.
En: Their hands struggled with the soil but were filled with faith and clarity of purpose.
He: כשהשמש זרחה שוב, השטח נראה כמו שהיווה רק הרגיזם רטוב ועדין.
En: When the sun rose again, the area looked like it was merely wet and gentle sand.
He: שבועות עברו, ואט אט המדבר התחיל לשנות פניו.
En: Weeks passed, and slowly the desert began to change its face.

En: Finally, as if emerging from a fairy tale, a small sunflower leaf appeared.

En: Leah was filled with joy.
