第9课

1. Did I stuff too much laundry in the washer? 我是不是塞太多衣服到洗衣机里面了呢？
stuff 这里是动词“塞满”“填充”，stuff 还可以做名词“东西”。washer 就是“洗衣机”。
当洗衣机里塞了太多衣服时——
洗衣机就会发出奇怪的声音。The washing machine is making strange noises. 
怎么回事呢？What's wrong? 
它开始摇动。It's started shaking.
这对洗衣机可不太好呀！所以洗衣机里最好不要一次“塞进太多”stuff too much in 才好。

2. Is it all right to wash this blouse myself? 这件短上衣可不可以自己洗呢？
Is it all right to...? 是“可不可以（做）……”的意思。 blouse 是“短上衣”“女衬衫”。
当我们“洗衣服”do the laundry 的时候要特别小心，否则衣服洗完后发现 It shrunk.“（衣服）缩水了。”那可就麻烦了。
贵重的衣服最好是“送到干洗店去。” Take them to the dry cleaner's.

3. I take the clothes to the dry cleaner's. 我把衣服拿到干洗店。
take...to... 是“把……拿（带）到……”的意思。
“洗衣店”可以说 (dry) cleaner's 或者 laundry。
在国外有自助洗衣店，在美国是叫 laundromat，在英国叫 launderette。

第8课

1. Today is a good day to do the laundry. 今天是洗衣服的好天气。
a good day to(for)... 是“（做）……的好天气”，to 后面加动词，for 后面加名词。可以说，Today is a good day to go on a picnic. 今天是个去野餐的好天气。
good day 也可以用 perfect day 来代替。
laundry 是“要洗的衣物”，还可以用作“洗衣店”。
do the laundry 是“洗衣服”，也可以说 wash clothes。

2. The laundry has really piled up. 要洗的衣服堆积如山。

pile up “堆积”，第三章第9课学过“要做工作堆积如山。”There's a lot of work piled up.
刚才说了 do the laundry 是“洗衣服”，上节课学了 do the dishes 是“洗碗”，这两个词组还都可以用 wash 来表达，wash clothes“洗衣服”和 wash dishes“洗碗”。
另外，其他用 do 表达的说法还有 do the shopping “购物”，do the cooking “做饭”等等。

3. There's no room left in the washing machine. 洗衣机塞满了。
表示“没空间，没地方”常用 no room 或 no room left。
还可以说 The washing machine is full. 洗衣机装满了。
或者  No more laundry can be put in the washing machine. 不能再往洗衣机里放衣服了。
如果想说“还有很多空地方（空间）”可以说 There is a lot of room to...

第7课

1. I set the table. 我在餐桌上摆好餐具。
set the table 是常用搭配，表示“摆桌子”。
“我铺桌布。”是 I spread the tablecloth. spread 是“铺开，展开”，第一章第1课学过 I spread the bedding. 我铺床。
盘子、碗等瓷器都是 china，刀叉之类的银餐具是 silverware，silver 是“银”，ware 是“器具”“制品”。
“筷子”是 chopsticks。
“碗”是 bowl。
“（平的，浅的）盘子”是 plate，“（深一些的）盘子（盛有汤汁的菜）” 是 dish。此外，dish 的使用范围比较广，可以做盘子的统称，还可以指所有餐具，“洗碗”就是 do the dishes，不光是洗盘子，就像中文“洗碗”也不光是碗…… dish 还可以指“（一道）菜，菜肴”。

2. I clear the table. 我收拾餐桌。
clear 是“收拾”，也可以说  I clear the dishes off the table. 我收拾桌上的餐具。
我擦餐桌。 I wipe the table.
如果说 I clean my plate. 是指“我把我盘子里的菜吃得干干净净。”

3. I dry the dishes. 我擦干餐具。
dry 是“擦干”“弄干”。
“擦干”餐具之前要“洗”，“洗碗”除了第一句说的 do the dishes，也可以说 wash the dishes。
“洗洁精”是 detergent。

1. I turn down the flame. 我把火关小。

turn down 是“关小，转弱，转小”的意思，也可以用 reduce，lower。

“开大，转强，转大”是 turn up。

用“文火（小火）煮”是 simmer，比如说 You must simmer the beans for at least three hours until they are tender. 你至少要用三个小时的文火来煮才能把豆子煮熟。

2. The gas is leaking. 煤气在漏气。

“漏（煤气、水等）”是用 leak，“泄露”机密同样可以用 leak，如 leak a secret。

“开（关）煤气总闸（总开关）”是 turn on(off) the gas main。

3. What's this smell? Something's burning. Oops! The fish! 这是什么味道？有什么东西烧焦了？啊，是鱼！

有时候我们会闻到奇怪的味道——

这气味究竟是从哪儿来的？ I wonder where this smell is coming from?

跑到厨房一看——

有什么东西烧糊了。Something's burning. 

（国外经常会用烤箱）可能会看到——

烟从烤箱冒出来。Somke is coming out of the oven. 

赶快关掉煤气。 Turn off the gas。

看看锅里的食物吧——

糟糕，都烧糊了。Oh, no. They're burned black.

第5课

1. I turn on the stove. 我打开煤气炉。
stove 是“煤气炉”。“暖炉”“暖气”是 heater。
“开（家用电器）”一般都用 turn on。
“我把锅（壶）放到火炉上”是 I put(place) the pot(kettle) on the stove. kettle “水壶”。

2. The kettle is boiling. 水壶的水开了。
The kettle is boiling. 和 The water (in the kettle) is boiling. 意思一样，都是“（水壶里的）水开了。”
如果是“水煮沸而溢出来”是 boil over，“水满出来”是 spill over。

3. The flame goes out. 火焰熄灭了。
火炉的“火焰”是 flame，“火警”是用 fire。
“火熄灭了”是 go out。
“关”是 turn off，“关掉火炉”是 turn off the stove。
“灭火”是 put out the flames(fire)，也可以说 extinguish the fire，extinguish 是“熄灭”“消灭”“扑灭”，extinguish + er后缀 = extinguisher，fire extinguisher 是“灭火器”。

第4课

1. I sprinkle some salt on the salad. 我撒一些盐在沙拉上。
sprinkle 就是“撒”，可以用于“撒（盐，胡椒）”。之前第一章学过“（给花）撒（水）”也是用 sprinkle。sprinkler 就是“洒水器”“洒水车”“（建筑物内的）自动喷水灭火装置”。后缀-er 表示“……人” “……物品，机器” 。
西餐烹饪时常说 “一大（小）匙的盐”，“一大（汤）匙盐”是 a tablespoon of salt，“一小（茶）匙盐”是 a teaspoon of salt。 
tablespoon 是大汤匙，tablespoonful 是满汤勺。缩写 tbsp.。
teaspoon 是小茶匙，teaspoonful 满茶匙。缩写 tsp.。
1 tablespoon(汤匙）＝3 teaspoons（茶匙）= 15 ml，也就是说 1 teaspoon = 5 ml。

2. The salt is all damp and stuck together. 盐因为潮湿而结块了。
damp 是“潮湿”，“湿透”是 soggy。
stuck together 是“结成块状”。单是 stuck 是“缠住”。
西餐餐桌上常常会有小的盐罐和胡椒罐，如果说，“小盐罐里的盐撒不出来了/堵住了。”是 The salt shaker is all clogged up.

1. What can I fix for dinner? 我用什么来做晚餐呢？
这里的 fix 是“调理”“烹饪”的意思。
我快要饿死了。 I'm starving to death. starve 是“饥肠辘辘”“非常饿”，比 hungry “饿”程度更深。
今天晚餐吃什么？ What can you fix for dinner tonight? 或 What's for dinner tonight?
我要炖肉。 I'm going to make stew. stew 是炖菜的意思。

2. I grill a piece of meat. 我烤一块肉。
一般说“烤”肉或者鱼是用 grill。
“烤”还有几种不同的说法：broil 是“直接放在火上烤”，roast 是“在烤炉里烤”，barbecue 是“一串一串地烤”，bake 是“烤（面包或者蛋糕）”，toast 是“烤（吐司面包）”。
肉的烤熟程度一般可分为 rare“三分熟”，medium-rare“四分熟”，medium“五分熟”和 well-done “全熟”。

3. I deep-fry pork. 我炸猪肉。

“油炸”是 fry 或者 deep-fry，“炒”或者“煎”一般也是用 fry，可以说 I fry bacon until it is crispy. 我把培根煎到又酥又脆。
“外面裹着面，里面有馅的油炸食物”叫做 fritter。

第2课

1. I peel a potato. 我削土豆（马铃薯）皮。
peel 是“削，剥（蔬菜、水果之类的皮）”。peel an orange “剥橙子”。
peel 也可以做名词，就是水果、蔬菜的皮。banana/lemon/potato peels 香蕉/柠檬/土豆皮
这句话也可以说 I take the skin off a potato. 这里的 skin 和 peel 一样，都指“皮”。
“用刀子削皮”可以用 pare 这个词，pare apples“削苹果”，pare 还可以当“剪（指甲）”，pare one's nails 剪指甲。 

2. Chopping onions always makes me cry. 切洋葱时，我总是（被熏得）眼泪直流。
“用刀切菜”常用 chop 或 cut。
因为切洋葱而眼泪直流，所以这里用使动 make。也可以用“眼睛”eye 做主语，说 My eyes water whenever I chop onions. 这里 water 是动词，“充满泪水”的意思。
如果是把东西“切成薄片”是 slice，把肉“切碎”或“剁碎”是 mince。

3. This knife cuts very well. 这把刀很锋利。
cut 常常用作不及物动词，就是后面不跟名词。
cut well 就是“刀刃锋利”。
“锋利的”形容词 sharp，这句话还可以说  This knife is very sharp. 
相反，“这把刀很钝。”就说 This knife doesn't cut very well. 或 This knife is not sharp enough to cut well.

第1课

1. I vacuum the floor. 我用吸尘器清扫地板。
vacuum 是“用吸尘器清扫”，这里是动词，也可用作名词“吸尘器”，也可以说 vacuum machine。
这句话还可以说 I do the vacuuming.
打扫有两个词常常用， sweep “（用扫把）打扫”和 mop 是“（用拖把）打扫/清扫”。
“我收拾房间”是 I tidy up the room. tidy 是“收拾，整理”。

2. I scrub the sink. 我擦洗水槽。
scrub 是“（用力）擦洗”的意思，sink 是“水槽”，也可以说 scrub the bathtub 擦洗浴缸，scrub the floor 清洗地板。
另外有一个和 scrub 很像的词是 scour，表示“擦洗，擦亮，冲刷”，可以说 
I scoured the toilet bowl. 我用力擦亮了马桶。 
scour a dirty oven 擦亮脏烤箱。 

3. The bathtub needs to be scrubbed. 浴缸需要擦洗。
“清洁浴缸”还可以用 clean 或 wash，如果用 scrub，是表示“用力擦拭”。
句中的 need to be 可以用 have to be 代替。
这句话也可以说 The bathtub needs scrubbbing.
关于清洁的单词，除了 scrub，scour，clean，wash，还有 wipe “擦”，dry“擦干”。

第三章 公司

第12课

1. Everyone comes back from lunch. 大家都吃完午餐回来了。

everyone 和 everybody 可以通用。come back 和 return 意思相同。

“出去吃午饭”是 go out to lunch。

“我去中国餐馆（用餐）。” 是 I go to a Chinese restaurant.

很多餐馆每天都会有“今日特餐” today's special，可以说 I order today's special.“我点今天的特餐。”

2. For once, I can get off work early. 难得我可以早一点下班。

for once 是“难得这么一次”的意思。

之前学过“加班”是 work overtime，那么“我今天不必加班。”是 I don't need to work overtime today. 

“能够早一点下班真是太棒了！” Getting off work early is such a great.

3. It's payday. Let's party. （今天）是发薪日。我们去热闹一下吧！

payday 就是“发薪日，发工资的日子”。

拿到薪水后可以和同事说 Let's go out for a drink. 我们去喝一杯吧！

Don't tell me you're going straight home. 别告诉我你要直接回家。
