Story Transcript:

He: על החוף הסמוך לטיילת בתל אביב, רוח בת ים נושבת. דוד, התייר האמריקאי החדש, מתהלך במרחק נגיעה מהמים. על פניו, אפשר לראות את החיוך המתרחב אשר מגלה את ההתרגשות שבתוךו. זו הייתה הפעם הראשונה של דוד בארץ. דוד הוא בן 60, אבל רוחו הצעירה מרגישה כאילו הוא רק בתחילת שנות השלושים שלו.
En: On the beach near the promenade in Tel Aviv, a sea breeze is blowing. David, the new American tourist, walks just a touch away from the water. On his face, one can see the widening smile that reveals the excitement within him. This was David's first time in the country. David is 60 years old, but his youthful spirit feels like he is only in his thirties.

He: דוד עצר במאפיית בובקה הקרובה. הריח המתפשט מהתנור שבה גירש את ריחות הים, והחליף אותם בניחוחות עומסי סוכר וקינמון. בעידן החנוכה, המאפייה היתה מלאה במלחמי דלעת מלאים בריבת תפוחים או לוז וסופגניות מנומרות בסוכר פודרה.
En: David stops at the nearby Bubka bakery. The smell wafting from the oven drives away the scent of the sea, replacing it with the rich aromas of sugar and cinnamon. During the Hanukkah season, the bakery is filled with jelly doughnuts filled with apple jam or hazelnut spread, and powdered sugar-coated beignets.

He: דוד עמד מול הדלפק עם מבט מלא בידידות ואמר, "אני רוצה להזמין... אה...”. הוא החמיא את הלחם הצרפתי, הליקפה מרחם של העוגות והחטיף מדגמים שונים של חלה, אך הסופגניות היו הקשי. הוא חזר חלילה: "סו...סו...ס-". דוד ניסה שוב : " ס...ו.. פ-ג..ש?".
En: David stood at the counter with a friendly look and said, "I want to order... uh...". He praised the French bread, the delicate cream of the cakes, and the various samples of challah, but the beignets were the problem. He tried again, "S... o...s-". David tried again, "S... o... f-g...sh?".

He: נעמה, מלצרית חמודה וגלישה, הבינה את הבעיה שלו, היא חשפה חיוך חם ואמרה "סופגניות! אתה מנסה להגיד סופגניות". דוד חייך, מודה בבושה על קושיו להבטיא את המילה.
En: Naomi, a cute and friendly waitress, understood his problem. She revealed a warm smile and said, "Sufganiyot! You're trying to say sufganiyot." David smiled, thanked her for her patience in trying to pronounce the word.

He: לאחר שנעמה נתנה לו שיעור מהיר במבטא עברית, הוא ניסה שוב והצליח. החיות שלו התרחב כאשר הוא חזר ואמר "סופגניות" עם מבטא אמריקאי חם ותמים. רוב האנשים שבמאפייה צחקו באהבה, ודוד בירך לנעמה שלאה הכי שמחה שהוא אי פעם ראה.
En: After Naomi gave him a quick lesson in Hebrew pronunciation, he tried again and succeeded. His smile widened as he repeated, "Sufganiyot" with a warm and innocent American accent. Most of the people in the bakery laughed with love, and David waved to Naomi, the happiest he had ever seen her.

This was David's first Hanukkah in the country, and definitely not his last.
